I believe line is important, and use two-pound test fishing small waters. If I am fishing for keepers, I use circle hooks and as little weight as needed to stay close to the bottom. Flat or calm water fishing a floating fly line spooks trout. It is better to use it fishing fast moving water. Small red worms are an easy bait to find or bring with you.
Circle hooks make setting the hook unnecessary and hook trout best just by reeling the line tight and never deep hook fish. The thin line also sinks better and is less visible to fish. It casts easier and with the proper rod and small reel is perfect for backpacking and is much better suited for small stream fishing with small live baits or micro size artificial lures.
If you expect to find larger fish, I use braided 6-pound line with an appropriate leader of lesser weight. There is no need for a reel that holds 150-yards of line fishing small streams. The most you will ever need is 150 feet or even less not yards. Your tackle choices are important for the type of waters and fish size you expect to catch. The cost of good ultralight rods and reels are often less and better suited for fishing small streams.
The best rod length is 6½ or 5½-feet. Once you use the proper tackle, you will be glad you did. I will bet on that and never loose. 👍🤣😂

Will have to try bacon, you got me thinking with the fresh water clam being good bait, I bet a slice of gristle would be a resilient option as well. Thanks for sharing your tips Greg.

Are you generally pretty near the coast most of the time? Or do you go inland sometimes?

Yes I go inland sometimes - of course in NS, inland is never much more than 50km from the coast
