It will also propagate from a leaf cutting, although it takes a while. I took home a leaf from a farm tour that the farmer had broken off and passed around the group, put it in water on my kitchen window sill just to see what happened, and it sprouted roots! Popped it into the ground and now I have a beautiful comfrey plant!

There's really not a reason to not try it out now - I feel like y'all have demystified it a bit more for me. Why not plant it in areas where it just looks like any other weeds growing in my yard? You got 78 cuttings and 7 crowns from one plant! That is amazing! Now if we just an animal that liked to eat the stuff, we'd be set. Chickens have ignored the comfrey I've picked for them so far.
Literally thousands in just a few years from a dozen root cuttings. The Buns in The Rabbitry go nuts for it. We finally, after 4+ years, ditched the commercial bagged pellets and Comfrey is good for 20% od the food we raise to feed the growouts for the freezer.

How did the fermented feed go down? I've been feeding it to all ours for years now. More solid droppings and the birds just seem to look healthier. I have also started to mix some in with the pigs soaked grass nuts as they love grain but can't digest too much of it. Hardly any grain comes out the other end now 🤣 in all the years I've been feeding it I've only ever had 2x 5gallon buckets go Slimey. And that, I'm sure, was because of the heat wave we've just had. Don't think I'll ever feed them unfermented or unsoaked again. xx 🇬🇧
@@dawntheodore Actually they like it better fermented. At first they were skeptical but only a few minutes as I fed them later in the day with the first batch of fermented feed, so they were hungry lol I have thrown out dry feed on the ground just to see what they do. They start to eat it but always go back to fermented. It is a win for my chickens. Thank you for asking!

Praying for your friend Danny, that he is healed completely. I just ordered some comfrey. I was excited to watch your gorilla gardening show. I have about a qtr acre that is a gentle hill with very poor soil out back. I've been watching things going on and decided to plant an apple, mulberry, pear and more elderberries to provide more food and save this old body from mowing that area. Maybe even put a honey bee box up there. Excited to have found your site!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I started growing comfrey this year and just harvested some a few days ago. I put some of it in the compost and some I put in containers that I'm growing vegetables in. It's an amazing plant!
I just placed a comfrey order, I feel comfy about it :).. Thanks for the great info, we all have to work together to weather what the Good Lord also says is coming. Be prepared, not scared. 🙏
I regarded my humble gifted comfrey an invasive plant a few years after planting. I was warned, but didn't appreciate how it does take over. It will grow in the most adverse conditions and is all but impossible to eradicate if it roots in rocky soil. After years of trying to remove it, I learned to appreciate its value in composting, etc. (There are contraindications with human consumption). Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
The root cuttings I got from you spent a bit long in the fridge, so I was worried about them. But, they are all coming up now and looking great! They did get planted in a heavy mulched area where I am trying to "fix" the soil. I can't wait to start using them, I am thinking next year they should be established enough. :)
Great video on Comfrey. I have been using Russian Bocking 14 and it's great. I started 23 plants about 6 years ago and just this spring, divided and now have another 33 Comfrey plants. I won't start harvesting them until next year but I planted them in good proximity to my garden beds which will be great for chop and drop. I also use it for my Jadam fertilizer it's excellent and I have been know to make Comfrey tea for my garden. It's a wonderful plant for the garden. I hope you have videos showing how to use it in the garden other than chop and drop and around fruit trees. Blessings to you!!
Great information. I traded some asparagus crowns for comfrey several years ago. But other than making some compost tea I had not used this plant to its full potential. I did dry some last year to try and make a healing salve from it during then winter but I never got around to it.. I raise most of our meat here on the homestead and I am always looking for ways to offset the cost of feed for the animals. I'll have to get my butt in gear and dig some up and disperse it around the property after watching this video. Thanks again for the great information about this wonderful plant.
We had to go travel 50 kilometers just to buy four small comfrey plants for $10 each because it's almost impossible to find where we are in Australia (and its getting harder to order plants and seeds from other states as well) . Ordered in seeds too. Going to use it on our current urban veggie garden, and when we get a property for everything else like you all do. Keep up the great work!!!
You’re awesome! Your approach is genuine and selfless. I recently picked up some comfrey root cuttings and they seem to be doing well here. We have clay soil in the Ozark region. I’d like to propagate in the future, but look forward to purchasing from you to show support. I feel like the more comfrey we have, the better! I’ve been a fan of yours for a while now and recommend your channel to others. I’ve been subscribed on my personal channel for a while, but just subscribed from our content channel as well. Keep doing what your doing! Thank you.
You guys are doing great work and inspire. I'm a former KC suburbanite trying his hand at homesteading in OH I just ordered some of your comfrey and psyched to get it going
You can also start your comfrey from seed. Got my seeds from Mountain Rose Herbs. They said to cold stratify the seeds first but I didn't and they still grew.
Be careful growing from seed. Most comfrey that is used in permaculture is from a sterile variety. If you let a seed-grown variety go to seed, it will completely take over. It’s not terrible, you just have to make sure you slash it down before it makes seeds. 🤙
they used to call it knitbone in old england (aids rapid recovery of sprains) I had a few of those those finger size cuttings grow to 3 feet in one year. LOTS of water needed. Comfrey tea good for the squashes
I believe you just came up with the name for the companion planting using buckwheat, cowpeas, comfrey. The Jackson 3. LOL. Awesome demonstration into using that comfrey.
for those who have also digitalis growning naturally. Make sure that they are never near each other.. the leaves look alike to those who dont understand the difference.

I noticed when i was doing my research on different fruit trees comfrey was a prefered companion plant for some and not for others. Not sure why or if someone was just being lazy. I like comfrey for the simple fact its great fodder feed while also medicinal for goats.
Great Video!! Do you think it matters much what time of the year to divide or dig up comfrey? I live in NC zone 7b. I am wanting to divide my 3 gallon comfrey to start in ground in different places and was curious if it might be best to wait till spring.
just now starting to learn about Comfrey! Awesome video, I can just tell you guys are caring people!! I hope Danny is doing ok!! I hope you guys do a lot of videos because you are very educational! How can i buy some of your Comfrey to get started?
i have a lot of success cutting it down to ground and covering with cardboard and wood chips/mulch if i want to kill it and not dig it up. sometimes i even put a paver over the cut down ones. i've planted 3-4 where i decided later they were really in the way, so those are the ones i killed off. you could douse them with a bit of vinegar before covering with cardboard to ensure they die also. they are def tough plants and want to grow.

I got some comfrey and it still has not come up after 2 months, I'm not sure what I did wrong, or if its the terrible heat, and the terrible droughts we have had here in TX. I do water at least once or 2x a day. I went ahead and ordered some seeds from a etsy shop and I'm hoping those come up for me. Thank you for what you all do.
I bought ten crowns on Etsy for 9.99 plus free shipping about a month ago and they are out and looking great here in San Antonio Texas. I did notice that the ones in a sunny location with a 50% shade cloth look bigger and happier right under my star fruit tree which is actually the one I’m protecting from our scorching sun

They did get planted in a heavy mulched area where I am trying to "fix" the soil. I can't wait to start using them, I am thinking next year they should be established enough. :)
Thank you so much for your purchase my friend!
We’ll be sure to do some more videos on it!
Thanks again for the great information about this wonderful plant.
your pure intent is what's it's all about. giving is the key. keep up the. great work.
Ok i love u guys. The jackson 5 ref was great. TY. Podcast it is.
Thank you so much my friend. Blessings to you and yours and Australia!
Hey mate, hi from the NT, I ordered some from Mudbrick herb cottage, come in the mail no problems 👍
@@bobstar8773 Thanks mate...will look it up...
@@bobstar8773 I checked them out mate - they don't ship to WA...but thanks for the heads up.
Oh bugger, sorry , yeah wa is always tricky 😔
You’re awesome! Your approach is genuine and selfless. I recently picked up some comfrey root cuttings and they seem to be doing well here. We have clay soil in the Ozark region. I’d like to propagate in the future, but look forward to purchasing from you to show support. I feel like the more comfrey we have, the better! I’ve been a fan of yours for a while now and recommend your channel to others. I’ve been subscribed on my personal channel for a while, but just subscribed from our content channel as well. Keep doing what your doing! Thank you.
That’s a fascinating plant. I may try that as an erosion barrier in poor soil areas we have.
You have a good wife and obviously make a great team!
Wow,great channel, Goshen prepper sent me over
I’m starting to become a big fan of that guy!
Blessings to you and yours Betsy!
You guys are doing great work and inspire. I'm a former KC suburbanite trying his hand at homesteading in OH I just ordered some of your comfrey and psyched to get it going
Thank you so much for your business and best of luck my friend
My chickens, ducks, and rabbits love it. The bees also love it.
The bees definitely love it also!
You can also start your comfrey from seed. Got my seeds from Mountain Rose Herbs. They said to cold stratify the seeds first but I didn't and they still grew.
I’ve never tried growing it that way.
Be careful growing from seed. Most comfrey that is used in permaculture is from a sterile variety. If you let a seed-grown variety go to seed, it will completely take over. It’s not terrible, you just have to make sure you slash it down before it makes seeds. 🤙
This is brilliant as I need to split my comfrey up and move it around my garden 🙂
Only 2 from my order came up good so hoping to be able to get more from them.
You can produce thousands from those two.
they used to call it knitbone in old england (aids rapid recovery of sprains) I had a few of those those finger size cuttings grow to 3 feet in one year. LOTS of water needed. Comfrey tea good for the squashes
I believe you just came up with the name for the companion planting using buckwheat, cowpeas, comfrey. The Jackson 3. LOL.
Awesome demonstration into using that comfrey.
Thank you so much my friend!
Wow beautiful sharing / watching here phillipines
for those who have also digitalis growning naturally. Make sure that they are never near each other.. the leaves look alike to those who dont understand the difference.
Thanks for the instruction manual.
Thank you very much my friend
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 Got the comfrey starts that you sent me planted this morning. Watered it down, then mulched it with leaves and watered it in, again. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Awesome comfrey for ground cover in orchard
Excellent video - Thanks!
Beautiful Beautiful!❤😎😎
Thank you so much Sonya!
just now starting to learn about Comfrey!
Thank you for showing how to propagate comfrey. I’ve been wondering how to do that. It’s good to know I shouldn’t be able to kill it.
Collective nouns for plants:
A "potion" of medicinal herbs
A "bouquet" or aromatic herbs
A "carpet" of spreading herbs"
An "arsenal" of culinary herbs
a "foliage" of ornamental herbs
I would love to put some comfrey under our pear tree and fig trees.
I do exactly the same thing!
Love me some comfrey. But my comfrey does so much better next to my chicken coop then any where else on my property. So I think for me it does need a good quality soil it grows so much better. Thank you for the video!!
🙏🙏 Prayers for your friend Danny! Hope he gets well soon! Thank you for sharing your knowledge....I appreciate it! I've been meaning to get my medicinal plants going. This year has been about starting a new garden at a new home. The soil is compacted and it has not been easy. Due to the soil conditions Thistle has taken over and is Everywhere! I never knew such a weed existed that was so hard to get rid of! lol. I'll just keep on trying though! lol.
It still might come around.
