10 Years Later, From Normal Backyard To Permaculture Garden (Unseen Footage)

  • 10 years ago I started planting fruit trees and other fruiting perennials in my backyard garden. The goal at the time was to create a food forest garden that would be a mixture of both annual fruits and vegetables, and perennial fruits and vegetables. A permaculture garden is one that seeks to not only provide a good yield, but also aims to mimic nature and apply the patterns and examples from nature into the design of the garden. Gardening with permaculture principles in mind will ultimately lead to a bigger more sustainable yield for the current year, and years to come.

Here I am also in Jersey looking at my yard, sad face:( I grew up in the Caribbean, Barbados and my grandad had the entire property planted with fruit, vegetables and herbs. He used the water from the kitchen sink to water most of it and made a complex aqueduct-like complex of stone streams to water the rest. It was beautiful and delicious. I do not have a lot of fruits or veggies at home but I do have a plot in our town's community garden that is flourishing. One day James I will do as you have done, no grass period! At home I have planted lots of native pollinators and have a blast watching the birds, the bees and the butterflies feed.

Thank y’all for this incredible video! There are so many gardening videos online and so many new gardeners that it’s good to have videos like these showing that nothing happens overnight and it didn’t always look like this. I find myself getting discouraged quite often as well.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of negative self talk. Noticing what’s wrong is so much easier than giving credit for what’s right. Telling yourself you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s too hard, there is too much to learn, or the garden is not as good as everyone else’s and it’s time to just quit is a struggle. It’s easy to forget how our concept of time and how our environment’s concept of time are two opposing forces. The time that nature takes is much longer than ours.
I heard somewhere that the 3rd year is really when there’s a noticeable shift in the garden. After taking time to develop the soil and attract beneficial insects-which may not have been around in any big numbers to begin with-the microclimate established in the garden is really beginning to noticeably balance itself out around that time.
So again, thank you James and thank you Tuck! Keep growing on!!

I am doing the same thing! My backyard is half garden now. Not raised beds though. What James did for some of it was put down contractor paper down right over the grass, I think in the fall. I did that this spring, and just mounded a combo of cheap topsoil, peat moss and compost over the top and planted my vine crops in it.
I think for the rest he used the wood chips.
He's got some videos on the conversion, the contractor paper vid was from this spring I am pretty sure. I've got some info on my channel, if interested in seeing my progress. I'm in South Dakota.

Peaches in the store are bland or just end up rotting. It'd be a great video to help us newbies on how to think about choosing trees. Thanks!

    • @ajb.822
      @ajb.822 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey, I hope James sees your Q. and responds, too, but for now I thought I make a couple suggestions. i don't have much experience yet with fruit trees, but from what I've learned, the more healthy your soil is ( feed the soil life, don't hurt it by tilling or artificial fertilizers etc. - see more on this from Charles Dowding, the No-till growers & more) the more resistant to pests or diseases your plants will be. BUT it can help to buy trees from those also raising them naturally. Lastly, as one can, plants lots ( take cuttings off of or plant seeds from, a good one ) and lets the ones which aren't thrifty, die ( see vlog by Justin Rhodes interviewing Mark Sheppard called S.T.U.N. , it's super enlightening !). Do a 'net search for "permaculture ( or organic) fruit treee nursery near me" . Also check out Edible Acres Nursery and their list of other recommended growers/sellers ( most r in the NE part of USA, as he is). Lastly, there are some organic-approved products some still need to use, as James has in the past, using Koalin Clay as a spray to protect against something, 4get what.

Wow, I feel like a turtle compared to how you have progressed. I have been working in my garden for about ten years now and I didn't start my fruit trees until about five years ago. This year I lost three trees to peach leaf curl and my third Bing cherry. Yes, Bing cherries are suppose to be able to grow in Zone 7, but they won't grow in my back year. I guess they must hate my clay, hard , wet soil. Oh well, out with the dead trees and in with more pears. I finally have three apple trees that can deal with the cedar rust in my area. It has been a slow upward trip, but even with these problems and the Bermuda grass in my yard, I'm not giving up!! God bless y'all and keep growing!

Have you considered purchasing and applying predator pee to ward off the Squirrels? I bought some years ago at a garden center to address a skunk problem. Every garden critter has a natural predator. They have mail order places that sell it. It worked for me years ago.

    Hi James,
Thanks for another awesome video. Although I've been creating my garden for about 13 years now, from total wild brushy area, and even some small wooded areas towards the back I am still inspired and motivated by your videos. Our gardens are quite similar in ways, and quite different in other ways, but they are years in the making, and ever changing. Keep doing a great job, and give Tuck a high five for me. I'd love to show you a drone shot of my garden if you would be interested. Let me know how I can send a picture to you. God Bless, Mike

I was thinking after your last video that it'd be cool to see what it was like before you started the garden and here you go and put out a video doing just that. I'm trying to get my own food forest started but the bunnies and deer are working against me, they're hungry now and don't want to wait a few years for the plants to produce food for them to eat. Hopefully new fencing in the garden area will help deter them.

I completely agree that this is what we should be doing as a nation. Here in my local community, we've decided not to mow our lawns or use Roundup or other pesticides. Instead, we're letting our lawns grow. So many edible weeds and plants you can grow in your own backyards. We're also letting the lawns grow in a couple of abandoned houses, to supplement our neighborhood stockpile and donate the surplus to local food banks and church pantries. Thank you so much for caring and for sharing the previously unseen footage.

It's great to see how your food forest has developed through the years and it's given me inspiration to grow some of my own. Mainly it's fruit and a few tomatoes and herbs. Got blueberries, raspberries, loganberries, gooseberries, pink currants, blackcurrants, redcurrants, white currants, blackberries, plums, some apples and rhubarb.
Do you spend all of the days looking after your forest or do you work as well?

One thing I DID NOT learn from TH-cam gardening videos is about soil! I bought a garden blend, 70:30 topsoil/ compost blended. NOTHING grew in it! I did forget to add manure, and didn't have any home-made compost, but it didn't occur to me I'd get NOTHING growing! That soil cost me a lot! I finally sent some off for testing, and I experimented and put a few plants directly in the dirt, under the wood chips. I had growth finally. I checked for moisture in my big raised bed and the dirt was HOT! So, I figured I really should put up a 40% white shade cloth. I have DIRECT HOT sun all day. But under the wood chips I have cow manure/dirt (we used to have cows on this lot) and it was a much better temperature. Golly I thought I was ready to really get going on my garden. I'm 69 and I'm getting no where fast!! Then, the Chinese beetles came. And bagworms. Well, I know I don't want some senior apartment somewhere and be bored! What a life!! I'm still laughing though! PS: I've heard of the problems of tainted straw, dirt, etc from herbicides also that has wiped out gardens. That's not what happened to me. I just got no growth. (I put in seedlings and nursery starters) One TH-cam gardener bought soil in bags from a store. He got nothing to grow either. It's possible that some soil is 'sterilized' and maybe that's what happened to me. An old timer in Walmart told me about 'sterilized' soil. Maybe he meant there were just no nutrients. I don't have a good compost started yet, either. Haven't googled soil yet.

Loved this video. Tell me about a Persemion, how do you eat them? Raw or cooked? Jelly? Not familiar with this at all. I live in the Texas Panhandle, we get all 4 seasons here 109 in the summer, -10 in winter that is an extreme for us. We have some snow and ice but not for days and days. Just here and there. I would love to grow a peach, plum, and a couple of small apple trees. A cherry would also be nice but space is limited. I would need dwarf. I live on a corner city lot. I also have 4 chickens! I have been gardening in Zone7b Any ideas? We are very windy and Arid here.

Great video comparison of then and now. Your information and enthusiasm is contagious. I am in my late 60s, still working full time,, in upstate NY and learn something from every video. I no longer can plant and maintain a large garden and have a small fenced raised bed area and expanded to buckets and planters on my deck. Because of you, I have successfully grown my favorite San Mariano plum tomato plants from seed-18 of them! And lettuce and Kirby cucumbers successfully for the first time.
What is the name of the long cucumbers?
I have had a problem with chipmunks, raccoons and a family of 3 woodchuck. Any advice? I put netting around the pots of squash,, pepper, and tomato plants on deck. Open at the top for pollinators.. I have an old apple tree for the deer to devour. I pick my fruits, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, apples, and plums, at a local pick your own farm that is well maintained. It is my favorite place to be in early morning on the weekend.
You and Tuck keep up the great work.

James, Chris from the Isle of Wight UK. I have been greatly inspired by your gardening prowess. My wife Jenny and I moved to the house and garden we are in now last year and with 250 feet of garden and me reaching 70 I needed some guidance. You have been my inspiration and mentor as I’ve adopted many of your ideas. The best being the use of wood chips as a base. I had to clear a mountain of thumb nail size stones which was apparently used as a labor saving idea by the last occupants. Now the food forest is starting to take shape and I Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your wonderful ideas.
