It saw the spikes at the top before it made its jump, accounted for them, and realized when it got there it would have to be nimblish at the apex, upon which it was, as other comment mentioned it probably also has a thickish hide which ameliorated its defense.

I Was working on a rebuild project in Lagrange GA (Milliken rebuild).. I drove in before sunrise each morning. I would see deer inside an 8 foot high fenced in yard... they would be eating from fruit trees within the fence... I'd say to myself - how are they getting in?... UNTIL... one morning on the way in, I watched very large deer jump the 8ft fence from a standing start... with utter ease... I was stunned....
Deer are interesting in that they can jump high, but generally do not do well jumping wide, & they don't jump into a place when they can't see the other side (again, usually; there's always one non-conformist out there!). People build high fences to try to keep them out, but as this illustrates, that's pretty much futile. If you need to keep them out, a solid fence or a wide, thick hedge is a better bet. I actually use 2 rolls of wire fence laid down one behind the other & close to my rose bushes, & that works; they can't reach their necks that far & they won't jump into the rosebush.
A family of them lives near me here in the Sierra Foothills, she screams at me when her cubs are around -- usually once every two years, about June. I see (evidence of) them around my house when it snows. 45 years of this, no problems --- and I am a Land Surveyor. Same with rattlesnakes. These critters only strike fear in the hearts of city folk.
