Have you tried Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate? Last Xmas I was planning on making some syndet bars and saw that a lot of suppliers were running out of SCI so I purchased SLI(Sodium Lauryl Isethionate from Make your own because they stated it was a good replacement for SCI. It dissolved nicely in CAPB for a foaming facial cleanser and I took half of the batch and added salt and it turned into a nice thick pearlized cleanser that I absolutely love and it looks and feels like it has all sorts of ingredients but was just made with a basic formula. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves SCI. I did a little experiment where I took 3 beakers with equal amounts of water and put a chip from SCI in one, SLI in another, and SCMI in another one. By the next day the SCMI was dissolved, which I already knew it would. The SLI was still solid but had dissolved a little bit more than the SCI. I wasn't expecting that because the SLI has a more opaque appearance than SCI. SCMI is a great substitute for SCI in liquids because it's water solubility is higher. I use it in my fav shampoo formula and it works well for my whole families hair even though we have different types.

I LOVE your videos and content! Question: I made your creamed soap paste (which lathers beautifully with a small amount in your hands). Then I used it to make your Lemon Meringue Whipped Soap (minus the peptides). It whipped beautifully! But, it did not lather well at all, it almost just rinsed off. I ultimately wanted to use this paste for a whipped scrub, and then added about 8 ounces of sugar to the whip, hoping to boost lather? Nothing. Would it up the lather better if, say, I added SCI to the paste/water/stearic phase to get that whip to lather well? Love your knowledge Marie!

easy understanding video!thanks a lot. I just trying to switch my shampoo ingredient from SLS to sodium cocoyl isethionate. Because I found SLS is a wildly used in facial cleanser, shampoo, soap, etc. if I stop have a bath for 1 day my body & hair & face starts to become extremely oily. I dont want to rely too much on SLS.
Sodium Isethionate is the lathering ingredient in Lush shampoo bars. It's also used in "syndet" bars, synthetic detergent bars. They are "beauty bars" which can't be labeled as soap. I've bought some syndet bars with sodium Isethionate for use as a shampoo bar. They vary in effectiveness, mostly due to other ingredients, especially fats and oils to make it moisturizing to skin. You can make your own shampoo bars with it using many recipes found online. Sodium Isethionate is less harsh than SLS and not as drying. I suggest putting the shampoo bars in a small mesh drawstring bag to hang it up with, the mesh helps the lathering and drying it out prolongs the product. This info I gathered started with me wanting to make my own shampoo bars cheaper than Lush.
The section on melting the sci - what ratio of liquid surfactants to sci are you using to get that thinner, runny consistency (before adding water)? I keep getting play-doh but I need it pourable into small molds.
Hi, Marie. Can you please share about Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate and how to use it? It seems not much info available online other than it is a very gentle surfactant.
Can you add a fragrance oil to Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate and just use that powder to bathe with? Like is it okay to just wet the powder and bathe with it?
That's more of a cream soap formulation question than a Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) question :) Perhaps check out my post on melting body butter (www.humblebeeandme.com/why-is-my-body-butter-melting/) and look at the ingredient lists for some cream soaps to see what's in them to get some ideas? It's not something I've done much work with, so I don't have much experience to share. Happy making!
Are you asking about the difference between Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) and Sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate (SLMI)? If so, the different name will be the biggest initial differentiator :) Sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate isn't transparent Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI); it's a different ingredient.
@@HumblebeeAndMe No...not a different ingredient, SCI itself.. I got from 2 different suppliers and 1 was transparent and the other non-transparent (was not specified) but looks the same and got the name SCI.
I'd ask your suppliers-they should know :) Every Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) I've worked with (the ingredient itself) has been opaque. What does your transparent Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) look like? (EDIT: I see you said they look the same, d'oh!) When it comes to making optically clear formulations with Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) I've found the dosage and the rest of the formulation to be more important than the specific Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) used :)
Here are two older formulations made with Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) from the same bag; one's clear and one isn't :) www.humblebeeandme.com/orange-cloud-foaming-hand-wash/ www.humblebeeandme.com/lemon-rose-creamy-body-wash/
Can I handle the noodles without a dust mask? I don't have a good one yet, but I'm eager to make solid & liquid formulas by wet grinding SCI noodles in Cocamidopropyl Betaine in the hopes of avoiding the need for a mask. Or do the noodles come with floaty powder residue?
hey there, just wondering. can you clarify whether the respirator is also necessary for the solid noodles of SCI? do the particles become airborne as easily in that form as they do in the powder? i was wondering if it would be feasible to buy the noodles & wear a fabric mask instead of full respirator. not sure who to ask about this though! wouldn't want to put the health & safety of myself and my cats at risk. thanks so much.
It typically doesn't perform very well in such formulations; I've experienced precipitation over time. Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate (SLMI) + Sodium cocoyl methyl isethionate (SCMI) are better options if a hydrous mildly acidic formulation is the goal :)
If you lower the pH, the formulation can become unstable. This is one of the reasons I think Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) is best suited for solid formulations.
This is my go-to I use the powder not the noodles and I buy in 50 lb bags I love to make the foaming soap base from scratch as well as shaving soap I always put at least three tablespoons in my bath bombs it's my go-to not a big fan of sodium lauryl anything!
I use SCI in my solid shampoo bars. For my type of hair , which tends to get greasy, I am not sure if this is the best choice. Which surfactant would you recommend? And which oil?
