Maybe a little off topic but as a new formulator I've found it extremely useful to create a spreadsheet with my inventory of products with their usages and characteristics as well as links to the source/where I purchased them etc
You are wonderful! Concise, meaty, and I always finish feeling like my time was well spent. I've dabbled in formulation, testing variations, growing my own ingredients, and have accumulated tons of equipment, supplies and information over the years. The next step is to do it. I'm so glad I found you. You're just what I needed!
Thank you so much and welcome! ❤️ Don't forget to check out my blog (humblebeeandme.com)-I've been blogging since 2011 while I’ve only been on TH-cam since about 2016, so there is TONS more content on the blog! Happy making :)
Do you have a blog post about cationic vs anionic emulsifiers? Would love to see an in-depth dive of that science and why one is different from the other when making lotions.
I’ve found that in choosing ingredients to buy/start with, I’ve been making a note of all the skincare ingredients from natural cleansers, moisturizers that my skin has responded well to and picking them from there.
I have been a patron for almost a year and have been making many of the formulations with various changes and love all of them. I love the way you are doing the free course and still find all the information very helpful. There is so much to learn so this is a great refresher of do's and don'ts. Thanks so much Marie! I will definitely subscribe as a full patron again when my year is up. I love formulating and making all the different body products my family wants. Your hand wash formula is amazing!!
I’m so glad you are enjoying my channel! Don’t forget to check out my website as well, there’s a ton of great information there; the encyclopedia and FAQ are especially helpful ❤️
Hi there! Thank you for this free, informative video Wondering if you have anything like a cost break down sheet for starter supplies like these 10 ingredients?
You know what I think is cool. When I research things I’m like oh yes. I want to try this. Oh ok I need 3 percent and it goes well with shampoo. Oh and I want to add this. You know. Make my own creation. I love your stuff and all that you teach me. And I’m just getting in containers to start making things. And organizing things. I forget what I have and really need to write things down somewhere lol
Thanks so much for these two videos! Once I have the 10 ingredients is there a way to easily find your recipes that use the ingredients? I’ve been doing a lot of searching but am mostly finding recipes where I’ll need other ingredients as well. Thanks!
I AM FOLLOWING YOUR TH-cam CHANNEL AND YOU HAVE GREAT CHEMICAL KNOWLEDGE. I WANT TO MAKE BODY WASH IN POWDER FORM AND CONCENTRATED FORM, SO ONLY WATER LEFT TO ADD., CAN YOU SUGGEST INGREDIENTS TO FORMULATE THIS PRODUCT?
Hello! I was looking on your website for product containing keratin but I was not able to find any Are you going to create formulary with keratin, like hair masks, shampoo, conditioner, etc?
Do you have a list of recipes that only include these ingredients? The only one I have found so far is your super simple lotion. Or are these 10 Ingredients more meant to be base ingredients that you can use for a lot of things but you still need other things to make a bunch of stuff?
Great video. With the new generation bio surfactant synthesised with microorganisms like “ sophorolipid “ are into trend claiming all natural alternative surfactant . Could u Please do make a video on same .
Hi Marine Is Cetearyl alcohol emulsifier? Can I use this instead of btms-50 in hydrous products like emulsified body butter, lotions? I vaguely remember it was said in you blog Cetearyl is fatty thicker not emulsifying wax. I might be wrong. Thanks.
Hello there! I was wondering if you have used PEG-20 Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate? I have this ingredient and want to use it but I’m not quite sure what to create with it. I know that you can use it in creams and lotions but I’d like to make something spectacular! Something I’ve not yet made to give me a real challenge! I thought you would be the perfect person to ask about this. Please let me know your thoughts 💭 ❤️❤️❤️❤️ love you btw!!!!
I'm afraid I haven't! I recommend checking out these posts (www.humblebeeandme.com/how-to-research-your-ingredients-part-1 & www.humblebeeandme.com/how-to-research-your-ingredients-part-2) to learn how to research it + learn what it's for/how to use it :) Happy making!
In a nutshell: Solubiliser=Small amount of oil into a larger amount of water/water soluble ingredient Emulsifier=Small amount of water into a larger amount of oil/butter
Hey! You'll find the answers you're looking for in the Humblebee & Me Encyclopedia at www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia. Simply look up the ingredient(s) in question to learn about why they're used in formulas, substitutions, what they do, usage rates, and more. Happy making!
It depends on if you consider hydrogenation natural-it seems to exist in a bit of a grey area. PEG's are definitely not natural, though regardless of your opinion on hydrogenated oils, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is not natural.
Waiting for that day in the future when I'll be able to buy these ingredients and try some of your recipes 😂 Would you consider diy a serum for face masks? The normal ones you buy at the store are very environmentally wasteful, so I don't really want to buy them. Apparently in Korea they now sell disposable sheet masks (still wasteful) with a bottle of serum on the side 🤔 looked really interesting and I looked into some diy sheet masks, but all they use is juice and teas and I just trust you more 😅
Kitchen Scale ⚖️ You mentioned a Surfactant that has PEG. It is known to be a Carcinogen. Why would anyone buy an Ingredient like that when making ORGANIC products?? In video I you did the same thing. 😔
Hi! Saying "PEG is known to be a carcinogen" is like saying "Milk is known to cause tuberculosis". The concern usually brought up in regard PEGs is the potential contamination with 1,4-dioxane. 1,4-dioxane is NOT an ingredient in PEGs. Think of it a bit like M. bovis (a bacterial species of the M. tuberculosis complex); this is not an ingredient in milk, it's a potential contaminant, and steps are taken to reduce that contaminant, which is why we generally do not worry about contracting tuberculosis from milk anymore. 1,4-dioxane a well-known potential contaminant, and the industry works hard to reduce that contamination as much as possible. This is true for a lot of ingredients, and is one reason why the grade of an ingredient is important. For example, the allowable concentrations for mercury and lead in iron oxides is much lower in cosmetic grade iron oxides than in industrial grade. There's more information here (www.cosmeticsinfo.org/ingredients/14-dioxane/) that includes discussion on concentration and dosage-something a lot of websites don't discuss, which is crazy when dose is critically important when determining whether or not an ingredient is unsafe. The European Commission Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety concluded "1,4-dioxane amounts in cosmetic products are considered safe for consumers at trace levels of ≤10 ppm". The Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-100 Stearate sold by Lotion Crafter is declared to comply with this-and on top of that, you wouldn't be applying that ingredient directly to the skin, so anything you'd actually encounter would be even less concentrated. In short, I am not worried about PEGs :) I don't claim to make strictly organic formulations. Some of my formulations are natural, some aren't. I'm sure I'm exposed to far higher levels of carcinogens walking down the street next to traffic than I am from my formulations.

Can I use Poly sorbit as a solubelizer? Where I use little oil in water like in a toner? Excuse my spelling as I use a speech device. I am blind.
Yes, polysorbate is a solubilizer. Learn more in the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/) :) Happy making!

Emulsifying wax isn't same as true wax?
What exactly is the difference between an emulsifier and a solubiliser?
In a nutshell:
Solubiliser=Small amount of oil into a larger amount of water/water soluble ingredient
Emulsifier=Small amount of water into a larger amount of oil/butter
Do you have the link for the haircare master class

Can you use bottle water rather than distilled
I don't recommend it; we use distilled water because it's *just* water. Bottled water has minerals and other not-water things in it.
