I believe there are 3 doors version, at least here in Europe. AWD it's useless on a fast small car with just 200hp. it will ad weight, power loss and probably will be boring to drive (more understeer). LSD is what you want, in case the car doesn't have one from the factory!
I just got my Cobb AP stage 1 in yesterday and this thing rips! Absolutely love it! Much more torque in lower gears and out of exits and it is much more throttle responsive. This is one of the most fun cars I have ever owned and driven bar none. Brilliant Ford!
you probably dont give a shit but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot my account password. I love any assistance you can give me.
@Will Hayes Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
My friend just bought one of these. It is one of the most fun cars I've ever driven, period. It's the right size, has the right power delivery, steering, brakes, chassis, it's amazing a car like this FINALLY made it to the US. I'm so jealous, and I have a 2013 Mazdaspeed3. Stage 1 may happen soon, but I first want to find it a quick shifter...
For the haters out there, they really need to understand how to read a dyno graph, and not only just look/ be interested in peak gains overall; Yeah sure +2whp/20wftlb to some people that don't know any better doesn't seem like a lot for the money, but if you bother to read the chart, you can see the overall improvement of the power delivery over the range, this increases drive-ability and overall power reliability especially on track, especially on forced induction applications.
I love these cars.... If I wasn't such a freak about high horsepower rear wheel drives, I could definitely get behind the wheel of one of these. This is what VW should have been doing to the GTI twenty years ago. They (VW) leave so much on the table from the factory it's insane what a chip tune will do. Thanks for the video, and keep us posted on the stage 2 upgrades...
why are the power gains so incremental? I put a Revo Stage 1 on my Audi A3 2.0T and power shot up from 197hp to 270hp and torque went from 207 lb-ft to 317 lb-ft. these are crank numbers though but even still the difference was massive, i thought Turbo cars get much more improvement from remapping compared to N/A due to the boost reconfiguration.
Your Audi is more detuned from the factory than the Fiesta is. remember, you have a 2-liter and this is a 1.6-liter. Most companies detune those 2-liter Turbo's from the factory in order to reduce torque steer, which most buyers find unpleasant. The tune opens up more of that power, at the expense of torque steer. Because the Fiesta's engine is much smaller, they leave less on the table at the factory. It's apples to oranges.
Because it's two completely different cars tuned by two completely different companies. Your question is kinda like asking why kobe beef is more expensive than a hot dog.. different approaches.
@@zerocool6257 so if it's truly making 229-lb ft to the wheels from the factory... Wouldn't that translates to about 255-260 crank TQ in reality?? I love low- mid-range grunt in small tossable cars so this thing must be a riot
The thing with the accessport is that the maps are totally customizable by you! The ots maps like the one he is using is conservative. But besides adding a lill power it adds it throughout the powerband. I know in my mazdaspeed 3 a Cobb stage 1 tune made a huge difference. It also removed the boost restriction in low gears and came with no lift shifting and launch control (& valet mode for at the shop so they don't joyride)
Cool series. I am looking forward to seeing the next couple stages. Sad to see your comments below about the WRX... I thought I would pick one up before the hatches disappear.
have to also think we are talking about a panel filter drop stage one. no intake no turbo back exhaust. wait for stage two that is where you will be happier with results
TheSmokingTire Quite interested to see the results of this little video series. I ordered a Spirit Blue Fiesta ST a few weeks back, won't be with me until about June though due to high demand here in the UK. I do find it a bit strange how it only gained +2bhp after being reflashed though. The Mountune Performance package here puts the peak power up to 215bhp after just an intake and reflash of the ECU. Any idea why it only made an extra 2bhp Matt?
Iram Plascencia I guess so, It's just that most of the Stage 1 remaps available here in the UK put the power output to around 215/220bhp with around 300Nm. 187bhp seems quite low, especially when the car overboosts to ~197bhp as standard.
VW's new 1.8t which replaced the base 2.5 5 cylinder goes from 165whp to 220whp with a stage 1 ecu tune and makes 270lbs-ft of torque and that's a base model engine. Remind me how 4hp and 20torque on a stage 1 upgrade is impressive.
I'm loving my Cobb pro-tune on my Subaru STI. Last dyno was 275 HP, 305 torque. If only the STI didn't have the atrocious rattlebox interior it'd be perfect.
Great little car! I think both the Fiesta ST and Focus ST need a real Limited Slip Differential from the factory... Especially once you start modding and getting ridiculous amounts of TQ to the wheels. I know, I own a MS3, lol.

best tunning for this engine is from Mountune Performance and it's Ford aproved, so you don't lose your warranty and you also can order a brand new ST with the kit already fitted from factory.

Matt, you should try a Burger Motorsports tuned MINI Cooper S that has an aftermarket intercooler and exhaust...after first gear, it's on point with a 997 and I'm not even joking...

Why didn't Cobb support the BRZ at least to use their accessport V3? They don't need to provide tuning for it if they don't want, I just want to be able to use the device.
Cobb accessport is usually for Turbo cars I believe, if you want to read stats and temps etc. You could get a bluetooth OBDII reader that connects to your phone, The adaptor might be about $20, and for the phone software (Torque and Dash Command are good) you can use a free trial or pay $10-20 for the full versions. Beats paying 500+ for an accessport that you don't really need for your car. IF you really wanna give away extra money, feel free to donate it to me since I'm giving you this awesome advice, even though it's 3 years later.
Thanks for the video! I bought my fiesta st after being totally convinced after the M3 vs fiesta comparison. I have the stage 1 power kit from cobb as well and it's nice to have a little extra torque, coming from a mk6 GTI where an APR tune would give 50hp and 70ftlbs, so I'm disappointed with the tuned hp number.
Comparing 2 different cars is pointless and I absolutely do not believe that you got even close to 50/70 at the wheels with just a tune. That is at least a 25% increase. BS
taylor wagneers I know plenty about German turbo cars. Some of them will make tons of power with very minor modifications and a tune...The GTi is not one of them. It's a very good car and can make that much extra power but it's gonna take a lot more than just a tune and drop in filter.
In Europa we already running 250whp and 370nm TQ (stage2) I can tell you that it is is very very quick. And can easily keep up if not dust more powerfull cars. It handles the power very good and cornering it just crazy with the Fiesta even at high speeds. Fiesta don't need awd. The less peolple expect from this car, the bigger my smile while dusting them whehe.
Hats off to you Matt. I love the car but I had a chance to seat in the seats and lets just say they didnt have my body type in mind when they made the seats.
They do break in after a couple weeks of driving. So if it's close, but just a little tight, they will be fine. If they really don't fit, you have to order one with the base seats.
Augusto Ortiz That's what I thought. I recently text drove the focus st and Fiesta st. love the Fiesta and focus. but liked the Fiesta overall just better driving experience. but the tq and hp in the focus was much better. so like you said Fiesta 2.0t would be beast.
crew transporting vehicle for road trips. The Fiesta is for local shoots where speed is more important than being able to hold 4 people and a week's worth of stuff.
TheSmokingTire pretty disappointing if you ask me. I assume this was running 91 octane? . Going Apr stage 1 with my gti.... expecting much better results!
TST is || this close to single-handedly making me go out and buy a Fiesta ST... and as soon as it is broken in I would for sure order this kit. 20 twist points from a drop-in filter and tune? Uhm, yes. Bring on Stage II!
Only gains at 2500 -3500 rpm at 4000 and up it the same as stock with very little gain! According to graph at Cobb timing . so top end is the same as stock!
Little confused here, so if I was to just buy the Cobb AP with stage 1 kit, after installation and downloading the stage 1 shelf map, is the car good or do you also have to take it to a dyno shop?
Love Cobb. There OTS stage 1 on my 335is was good for a 10% boost in whp and wtq and with some e40 and hardware changes a 70% bump in whp and 35% bump in wtq from stock. You guys ever consider putting a splash (1 gallon for a whole tank) of e85 in with your 91 to give you a bump in octane. Don't most ecus have the ability to increase flow by 5% to compensate?
It looks like most of the torque improvement is at 2000-40000 rpm, which is great, but is there a noticeable improvement at the top of the rev range? Is there a tune that can flatten out that torque curve a bit?
The biggest improvement is in midrange torque. If you want more power up top, you have to start changing hardware. The limiting factor is the size of the turbo, which is designed to produce low end torque from the factory.
TheSmokingTire My car is a week old, and this seems pretty damn affordable. I'd imagine I'd be voiding my warranty, but having the full use of all that torque in 1st and 2nd sounds fun... So conflicted. Oh wasn't even looking at the Fiesta ST before the E46 vs Fiesta ST video. Went for a test drive the next day, the car just makes ya smile man. You'd have to be insane, or rich, or both to choose a 10 year old M3 over the ST for a daily driver. Thanks for all the videos Matt!
I’m tuned 1.6 auto Ford Fusion with an intake cold air and muffler and resonator delete with a larger intake elbow makes 203hpand 260trq on 91 can’t wait to get e30 tune soon when it warms up and meth 😅
Have been seriously thinking about picking one of these up but... the new Mustang also looks awesome (obviously apples/oranges). Would love to see a write up on the new GT from you guys. Also, thanks for the Forza 5 car pack, the 300zx Turbo was a must have :)
TheSmokingTire Did you by any chance get any dyno pulls done before and after in any of the first 3 gears to show the difference that removing the torque limiter has with the Cobb tune?
I'm surprised at how many commenters are comparing the gains to other cars with larger engines and bigger turbos. Love the fiesta, and appreciate that TheSmokingTire is dropping in to comment!
Wait so by putting in a high flow air filter, A custom tune on this car, 2-3 extra HP and a stunning 20 Foot pounds of torque that's impressive. How much more power could you get? Stages 2-4 what do you get with those?
They probably didn't even need that stupid little filter to get those kind of gains. Take your car to a shop and have them do a custom tune and you can get better numbers safely without any major upgrades. Throw on a CAI and full exhaust and it will be even better.
Interested to see where this goes Hennessey has the 300 kit out pretty much just a intake and a aggressive tune be interesting to see if you can get to the same numbers for cheaper
Since cars are managed by the computer everywhere, it makes you wonder what some changing of the maps for any car would do to the performance. Its obvious the power was there on the Fiesta but they probably held back that power from factory so it wouldn't slip as much.
Emissions are an issue too. If you look at cars across Europe, a 2.0 TDI A4 in the UK may have one or two hp more than one in another part of Europe to slip around specific emission rules.
Matt, what is the space in the fiesta like? I have a focus but I was thinking about trading it in on a fiesta but I don't want a car I can't fit in. I'm 6'2 and around 230 lbs. So I'm a pretty large guy for those recaros.
It's a small car for sure, and you'll have a hard time fitting someone in the back seat behind you, but it's doable. I like it. But you really have to sit in one yourself to see.
today small cars really are no problem. I was gonna get either a opel corsa or a polo and im 6'5.... had no problem getting in into either.... I feel like car manufacturers are throwing away trunk space so that tall people can fit in.... fine with me
I believe Ford tuned it so first and second gear isn't quite as powerful so that you don't get so much wheel spin or torque steer, but if you have good tires it probably limits acceleration speed and throttle response a bit compared to when removing that with the access-ports tune. Stock, I haven't even been able to get my tires to spin besides trying to launch fast on really wet roads. I've only noticed torque steer like once and it wasn't too bad (during fast acceleration test). Do you find it slips more and has more torque steer as a result of the tune? Still might be worth it for the throttle response, just may take some adjustment in your driving technique to not spin the wheels in 1st or 2nd.
how well does this filter (cobb high flow filter) actually filter? I did notice more sound and as if the car breathed better but is it comparable in filtration to the oem?
Wouldn't that extra torque compromise the clutch on the Fiesta, or is the difference so small that it would make no real difference. 19lbs foot of torque is substantial in a small car like that, so I should think it would. Conformation on that please?
Ford warranties the Mountune remap in Europe which is claimed to put out the same torque as this tuned Fiesta, so it should be fine, although hard launches will undoubtedly mess it up.
Two horsepowers on a turbo engine from a remap ? Was the motor THAT optimized by Ford ? Because the Moutune version gets more with the same internals afaik !
It's a small turbo, so unless you change that all you can do is spool it up quicker and make more torque. And yes, the motor comes quite robust out of the box. Mountune also uses 93 (or more) octane, and we are stuck with the California 91 octane tune. You'd gain a bit more up top with a 93 pro tune than a 91 off the shelf tune.
Almost time for me to consider a first car and I am wondering whether or not I should look at the focus and fiesta st or if I should find something a little..... cooler (to non car guys) I just don't want to buy some guys ghetto R33 or WRX and end up dealing with his problem. any Input is appreciated
We literally had the stage 1 kit done 3 days ago. We want to put at least 500 miles on the car before doing the next stage. Probably a few weeks to a month.
Can't go wrong with Cobb. On my Forester XT I'm running an AP V2 VF39 map with their 3" downpipe. Stage "2.5" because I have the STi's VF43 turbo but stock fuel pump, injectors and intake (for now).
No, when you return it the car isn't yours anymore. Do you clean rental cars before you return them? Well, except when you fucked something up big time and want to try hide it.
Yep. Once you start tuning it and putting aftermarket performance parts on it there goes your warranty. Unless of course you put all the stock parts back and reflash it back to stock when you bring it in for warranty repair.
"IF" whatever is broken is proven to be affiliated with the mod you did, then yes, that part of your warranty is "denied". As in, if you only did stage 1+air filter, and your suspension broke, your suspension is still under warranty.
northroad1 They could just say it was the aftermarket part that did it. I dunno how they could prove it, even if they would. They could just say "Well you put a custom tune on the car that pushed the engine/trans past its limits so your claim is denied."
I don't think so. I believe they did a retune on the air/fuelmixture when they the improved airflow with the new airfilter. If they crank up the boost you would definitively see that on the Dyno graph ;)
Yes they will. The dealer will be able to tell when you married the stock map back to the ECU. Though they won't know it was an accessport they'll know you tuned it
Doom Guy they don't check that stuff. Only if they'd feel like it. But even if you blew the motor, tranny, or turbo.. they get paid by Ford to replace it under warranty. Why would they care? Wether if from Ford or out of your pocket, they still get paid.
Imagine a world where Ford offered the fiesta with awd and 3 doors. Hot hatch heaven anyone?!?!
you have the 3 door option, at least in Europe.
hell yeah! that is actually my dream but wait - you guys don't have the 3 door option in the US?
Nope. 5 Door only. Still a great car, but just adds that much extra weight. I own one, and it's still a blast, just a bit heavier and less attractive.
I believe there are 3 doors version, at least here in Europe.
AWD it's useless on a fast small car with just 200hp. it will ad weight, power loss and probably will be boring to drive (more understeer).

The stage 1 tune made much better looking lines. Really smoothed out power. Peak numbers weren't much but across the range it gave more.

They do break in after a couple weeks of driving. So if it's close, but just a little tight, they will be fine. If they really don't fit, you have to order one with the base seats.
When you doing the next stages of tuning?! Too keen to see the results!
Can anyone imagine a fiesta st with the focus st engine and wider body.. It would be a beast
Augusto Ortiz That's what I thought. I recently text drove the focus st and Fiesta st. love the Fiesta and focus. but liked the Fiesta overall just better driving experience. but the tq and hp in the focus was much better. so like you said Fiesta 2.0t would be beast.
ODB 2 port is located next to the OBD 2
What have you done, now I want a Fiesta st...
Cobb offers the motor mount with the stage 1 was that already put on?
Doesnt the Mountune kit with a tune and a filter get way better results than this?
It may, but it's also (as far as I know) designed for 93 octane. In CA we have to run 91 octane, so the tunes are more conservative.
Right. Didn't take that into account. My bad.
i talked with mountune and he said that it works with 91 as well.
If you guys are using the Fiesta as the camera car then what are you using the Odyssey for?
crew transporting vehicle for road trips. The Fiesta is for local shoots where speed is more important than being able to hold 4 people and a week's worth of stuff.
Great numbers! What was your break in procedure for your fiesta?
How much did it cost? I would assume this is super budget increase sort of stuff.
$520 for stage 1, but that comes with the Accessport which you re-use for stages 2-4 as well, so you don't have to pay for the tune after that.
Looking forward to stage 2!
Surprising amount of torque low down.
Interested to see where this goes Hennessey has the 300 kit out pretty much just a intake and a aggressive tune be interesting to see if you can get to the same numbers for cheaper
that kit is for a Focus, not a Fiesta.
oh damn the fact it was a fiesta didnt register with I just went straight to focus since it was a four door.
Did Matt say "ODB 2" at 1:57? Didn't know they came with an Ole Dirty Bastard too. Haha
how well does this filter (cobb high flow filter) actually filter? I did notice more sound and as if the car breathed better but is it comparable in filtration to the oem?
Are the back wheels spinning to?
Wouldn't that extra torque compromise the clutch on the Fiesta, or is the difference so small that it would make no real difference. 19lbs foot of torque is substantial in a small car like that, so I should think it would. Conformation on that please?
Ford warranties the Mountune remap in Europe which is claimed to put out the same torque as this tuned Fiesta, so it should be fine, although hard launches will undoubtedly mess it up.
Can I fit a 100lb American Bulldog in back seat? She fits in 09 Mazda 3 sedan? Found Fist near me and need a newer car with good gas and fun to drive.
Will stage in it! In NorCal!!!
*What does the "Payments Made:" mean in this context?*
+AzNightmare car payments, so he probably only had the car for 2 months before he put a tune on it.
Two horsepowers on a turbo engine from a remap ? Was the motor THAT optimized by Ford ? Because the Moutune version gets more with the same internals afaik !
Torque..... Also this is an ots tune, not a protune like one from fswerks or unleashed.
Allright thanks for the info, appreciated !
So roughly 202 horse and 250+ torque stock? Not bad at all.
Where is the stage 2 video ? cant find it
Almost time for me to consider a first car and I am wondering whether or not I should look at the focus and fiesta st or if I should find something a little..... cooler (to non car guys) I just don't want to buy some guys ghetto R33 or WRX and end up dealing with his problem. any Input is appreciated
Buy what YOU like, if some one doesn't like it they can suck on a bowl of chodes.
simpsonfan13 you sire have won
How do these number compare to the focus ST at the wheels?
What will become of the Raptor? Daily driver?
Sold it 6 months ago. Had no use for it.
Ok. I think we're all looking forward to the new videos. Especially with a nice new chase car!
When are you guys going to upload the stage 2 video?
We literally had the stage 1 kit done 3 days ago. We want to put at least 500 miles on the car before doing the next stage. Probably a few weeks to a month.
Can't go wrong with Cobb. On my Forester XT I'm running an AP V2 VF39 map with their 3" downpipe. Stage "2.5" because I have the STi's VF43 turbo but stock fuel pump, injectors and intake (for now).
According to cobb tunings website stage 1 is 520.00 and no other stages are listed
since you're leasing, do you have to undo everything before you return the car?
Where did you get leased from? They said they bought it. Which means they're making payments to own the car.
"After testing the Ford Fiesta ST recently against the BMW E46 M3, we were so smitten that our cameraman Thaddeus went out and bought one!"
i follow their podcast and instagram
No, when you return it the car isn't yours anymore. Do you clean rental cars before you return them? Well, except when you fucked something up big time and want to try hide it.
Power gains up to 4000 are impressive
Does this void any warranty?
Yep. Once you start tuning it and putting aftermarket performance parts on it there goes your warranty. Unless of course you put all the stock parts back and reflash it back to stock when you bring it in for warranty repair.
TheCobruhAlienat0r
The manufacturer has to prove it was the modifications that caused the problem if they are going to deny a warranty claim.
"IF" whatever is broken is proven to be affiliated with the mod you did, then yes, that part of your warranty is "denied". As in, if you only did stage 1+air filter, and your suspension broke, your suspension is still under warranty.
northroad1
They could just say it was the aftermarket part that did it. I dunno how they could prove it, even if they would. They could just say "Well you put a custom tune on the car that pushed the engine/trans past its limits so your claim is denied."
another option is some dealers will sell you performance packages and may/will charge you more but then it's all warrantied.
Kinda disappointing.... didn't the tune up the boost any, or is that the next stage? I was expecting at least 15-20 HP on a retune of a turbo car.
that's a surpriginly sick little car.
Wow how come it was only such a little improvement? The N54 gains a lot more power from the Cobb Stage 1 Tune.
The N54 has six cylinders and twice the displacement of the Fiesta. The bigger the engine, the bigger the gains.
TheSmokingTire Got it. Makes very much sense.
I'm curious to know how much this cost.
$520
For 20 torque, that is not bad.
Isn't there a mountune pack for around $1.5k that puts it to 215bhp and 240 lbs/ft tourque?
1k and it has to be installed at a dealer that is ford performance certified.
Does the tune bump the boost up at all?
I don't think so. I believe they did a retune on the air/fuelmixture when they the improved airflow with the new airfilter.
If they crank up the boost you would definitively see that on the Dyno graph ;)
how much was the kit?
It's $520, but most of that money goes to the Accessport, which can be used for multiple maps (free) and hold custom tunes.
Question. Does the tune effect the overboost ?
I'm curious Matt. Money being no object, would you choose a Focus ST over the Fiesta ST as a daily driver? Thx, looking forward to part 2!
Yes, I prefer the slightly bigger size of the Focus.
t on. Thx for reply.
*Right on
dose this little bump in power void the warranty?
yes
not really.. you can always load the stock map back and nobody will ever notice anything
Wether if from Ford or out of your pocket, they still get paid.
the new afr curve is solid... only 2hp at peak but a much safer tune now
Funny, back in 2014 I didnt even know this car existed, and here I am in 2020 midway through my ST sedan swap.
Good choice on the Sonic Blue color, really looks good:). How much did you guys pick up the st for?
It's fully loaded, Recaro's, Nav, Sunroof, and it was like $25,400?
Aghhhhh im drooling. I hope it works well as a camera car! Im sure you will be taking the long way back from the video shoots :p
So, at the wheels you made more torque than stock.....HELL YEA
