Thank you, gamer dad! I've had my Switch, for a few years and the rails finally gave out. I'm glad I saw your vid, because I'm a single mom, and we're too poor, to get a new one. I have to say, though, I'm shocked that your kids broke yours....multiple times. My 7 year old son hasn't broken ours once, because he knows what I'll do to him, if he does. He knows the Switch is irreplaceable. Plus, I make him work his ass off, to replace anything he does break. He learned not to break things, real quick. Well, anyway, here's a like and a subscription.

Just today out of nowhere my left switch joycon died. I was using it fine yesterday. Come to find I can't charge the controller... I have tried charging it by other means and its still completely dead. However when I connect the working right joycon into the left port, it short circuits and cuts off completely as soon as the controller fully connects and "snaps" into place on the left rail. so is this an issue with the switch rail, the joycon or both?

I could just buy another controller but I'm not about to spend $70 on one.. I've actually used a different joy con and it still does the same thing in the rail..So it's probably the rail contact pins.. on the switch itself.. You are right on how they look. We just replaced the card reader on this same console and got a bad part and had to return it and order from somewhere else. It sounds like the ribbon on the rails might have ripped which is why it works sometimes. The first time we replaced it, it held up great. My 8 year old has dropped this so many times and they break again and each time the screw area gets stripped or cracks on the actual case. We resorted to gluing the rail back on the last time because the area didn’t have anything to screw into. We have the switch now in a case that protects the whole joycons. I’ve never gotten bad rails and I’ve replaced them 3 or 4 times but only because of how poorly the switch gets treated.

I bought an unpatched switch recently on eBay. to modify it , also bought a set of cheap 3rd party joycons for $ 35 . I powered it on a few days ago when I received it . It goes directly to the joycon connection screen , and the right joycon is really tough to slide on , you almost have to force it , which I don't wanna do ! They don't connect to the system or detect .could it be the cheap Joycons ? or maybe the Tablet ? This Sucks !!!!! haha I am able to get into recovery mode , not sure if that would help restoring. I would give that a shot but don't know is that would screw me with hacking it .

I haven't had to replace that one yet, but it's a little more complicated. Where the ribbon connects is actually slightly tucked under the mother board. I just saw this, sorry for no reply depends on how dented. If you try to bend it back in place to much, you could end up stripping those screw that hold it on to the console. If it’s just the inner rails that the joy con slides into, pliers might help. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hello, new sub here. I stupidly fell asleep after a 16 hr workday while playing. I found my switch on the ground with a BROKEN JOYCON, npt the switches rail. Anyways i fixed the joycon and reattached the ribbon thing.
Now my left side connection is considerably looser🥲😪.
Its not the joycon that it loose but instead the switch rail not the joycon rail😢. Even with the original joycons the left side is loose which wasnt the case before.

    • @BrickBuildingKids

It sounds like the fall may have stretched the inside rails. Replacing it would make it tighter again. That’s unfortunate for a new console. Sorry to hear that. You could try to use pliers to maybe make the gap smaller again and not replace the rail.
Do you remember if the left side was loose before you fixed the right side? Maybe it just needs one of the screws more tight?

Both sides were tight when i got the console recently. Woke up to my switch on the floor and the joycons rail was ripped off along with the ribbon. Fixed it and was loose. These were aftermarket joycons. Even with my unused OEM joycons that side was now loose🙃.

I watched the entire video to see if you did ONE CRUCIAL step, and you didn't.
The Orange-Gray "goop" between that heatshield/heat spreader (the massive aluminum backplate behind the backplate) and the heatpipe/heatsink on the mainboard HAS TO BE REPLACED when you do this type of service!
Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut is the BEST thermal compound that you can use to replace it that's not conductive, and likely would result in better temps on your switch 'out of the gate' just by swapping it for the stock thermal paste.
To do this here's what you need:
90% (or higher) Isopropyl Alcohol. Do NOT use lower formula mixes with more water because..well..water, right?!? 90% will dry nearly instantly.
q-tips, but a microfiber cloth, and toothpicks are a good option too since they don't leave lint, and can get into the nooks and crannys that a q-tip simply can't.
Thermal Paste - ANY thermal paste will work, and probably work better; but it HAS to be non-conductive, and CANNOT be a gallium mix as it'll eat aluminum. (Arctic MX-2/4/5 Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut are your best options.)
Dab the q-tip or microfiber in the alcohol, don't saturate it (although it won't hurt if you do. That's why we're using 90% or higher), just get "enough" on there to aid in breaking down the TIM, and use the toothpick to scrape off some of the harder bits.
Wipe the alcohol soaked q-tip, or microfiber cloth across the Thermal compound with a "common sense" amount of pressure - you're trying to take it off, and clean the surface, use the hardness of the compound as a guide for how much pressure you need.)
Once it's all nice and clean apply a LIBERAL amount f thermal paste (on CPU's in computers we go by the "pea-sized amount is enough" method, but due to AMD Ryzen chips being "chiplet" based systems on the substrate this isn't ideal anymore. Tegra's are CPU/GPU SOC so they're not "chiplet based" systems on a chip, but they're close. use common sense when applying it. A good sized drop right on the middle of the heatpipe (the copper tube with the pinch at the end) is right were you want it. Once the heatspreader's reapplied it's clamping force once torqued into place will do the spreading for you.
You're done. Since the paste isn't conductive you don't need to worry about "overdoing it". It'll spread as far as it needs to and honestly the more you have the better since there's a MASSIVE aluminum heatplate, and plenty of room for heat to be generated in this system BESIDES the SOC.
If you re-use old thermal paste - especially once it's hardened like this then it's essentially not even there. The entire purpose behind TIM (Thermal Interface Material) is EXACTLY what it sounds like. It's an interface between the heat SOURCE, and the heat DISSIPATOR. If you use old paste it will have air gaps, and those air gaps will trap heat, and CAN cause your switch to freeze, stutter, overheat, and artifact (artifacting is worst case scenario because at that point your entire Switch is dead - and believe me, you'll know when it happens because graphical oddities will show up EVERYWHERE)
I hope this helps your viewers, and yourself as well, and am more than happy to answer any questions when I can (albeit potentially slow as I'm a father of two boys aged 4/2 respectively as of writing this, and manage a group on Facebook with more than 50k Computer Enthusiasts within it so we get a bit busy. Plus, I like playing my switch and spending time with my wife when I'm not working.)
