Hi, Tomo! I have a 1966 Musicmaster II. I'm the original owner (my parents bought it for me brand new in '68) and it was my only guitar for several years. As a result I heavily favor neck pickups.
I’m lucky enough to be the caretaker for a couple of 50’s esquires as well as a 50’s tele, and I must admit, the bridge position on the esquires has just a little something more than the tele. I’m a firm believer that the single pickup models, esquire and LP junior do just ride above their two pickup counterparts, god knows why. Lovely video Matthew.
I built my own Esquire style Tele with the Seymour Duncan Antiquity '55 pickup and a Mike Eldred mod wiring harness. None of the mojo of a 70 year old guitar, but still sounds so good. Soft and gentle or over-driven and all between!!! You're assembling quite the collection, Matthew!!!
I've owned juniors and Esquires and I prefer a good Esquire every time. I have one here that I slapped together with parts I had laying around. It has a rosewood board, but I might change that next time I change strings. They are great guitars to learn on. You learn how to play the entire guitar. You end up working the volume and tone pots, bending the neck, you pick and strum up and down the neck for different voicings. Dedicate yourself with some serious play time on an Esquire and you will become a better guitarist.
Love the Esquire, Thank You for sharing Matthew. I've a solid rosewood Telecaster that sounds just killer, the all rosewood body and neck really darkens up the bridge pickup to give it an angry P90 vibe. That same darkness made the neck pickup sound very dark, almost useless (no matter what neck pickup or tone cap I tried). SOLUTION, I made it into a solid rosewood Esquire with the Eldred wiring mod. Love your content and music, thank you.
I held off getting an Esquire for so long... "Why would I want to cut my options by 2/3rds (neck pickup AND blended pickup selections)?" I bought one last year, and have *loved* it.
My first electric was a '58 Esquire, bought new, with a '58 Champ (Thanks, Dad!). It was everything Matthew says, and if my folks hadn't traded it in on a new '63 Country Gent I'd still have it. Still got the Gent, though! Gotta say the Champ sounded great, too, but since mic-ing amps hadn't been invented yet, it wasn't real useful onstage.
Most people would smell money and flip that one in a nano second. But you give the impression that you are not "most people". Curiosity compels 2 questions. Does it make the sounds you need? You've been saying for a couple of years now that you're looking for a Tele you could bond with. Do you think this Esquire might be it? It sounds real close to the one Dan Baird used when the Georgia Satellites were just "The Satellites". He got it from Steve Marriott in the early 80's and I have heard it hundreds of times in very small bars all over Atlanta, so the sound of yours is very familiar. It's hard to tell from watching on a screen, but it looks like it feels right. If it does, maybe it's a keeper. If so, congrats on adding another killer to an already mind staggering array of awesome instruments. In your hands, they have a good home.
Here's the thing... do any, here, realize just how long ago the 50s were? I was born in '51 and am 70 now. Most phones were all black, desk models. You want a bike? Choose from Schwinn, Raleigh, Western Flyer. TV?? Console B/W only. 3 local stations. The IBM electric typewriter had not been invented. Cars were round, heavy as hell, and ugly the same!!! The Beach Boys and Beatles were children. It was a Loooonnnnnggg time ago, folks!! The fact that Matthew routinely obtains and celebrates guitars made then simply blows my mind. Many thanks, Sir !!

I always dig it out to work on it when im over (hes an acoustic guy now) and im just blown away by that neck, its perfect and a total player grade guitar. Those old fenders have some proper mojo

That Blackberry Smoke sounded incredible
Gotta love Charlie Starr!
Yes this guitar does indeed sound like much more than merely a pre tele thing.. It seems to me perfectly suited to the serious country player, for one thing. Its good to see and hear you, Matthew, after a fair old time, in this wacky old world.. Peace indeed, if we can have peace.. 👍
Still have hope for peace! 🙏🏻✌🏻
