That sounds fantastic. I played Eric's Blackie in the 1980s, he used our rehearsal facility at Shepperton studio's UK, as did many other top artists like the Stones and Black Sabbath. My friend was his guit tech (for over 30 years) and asked me to play a guitar whilst he messed with a guitar synth (after rehearsals) that Roland had given Eric. He passed me Blackie and plugged it up. Some awful noises were happening and couldn't appreciate its real sound, but I was totally lost and on cloud 9. The set up was just spectacular and seemed to play itself, didn't need my right hand. Then I realised his 59 LP Burst was there amongst the 10 guitars sitting in a semi circle, so HAD to play that too. I was extremely fortunate✌️🇬🇧
Love hardtails. I have a 74 hardtail that I got for my 12th birthday in 1976. It was in the store, for two years, still brand new; nobody wanted it. It's not as cool as this 57, obviously, but it's still my favorite guitar.
I'm not a vintage guy, I'm not even a strat guy, I don't like old rock or blues yet I enjoy the hell out of your playing, your passion and love for your craft, gear and music. Stellar work and thank you!
Dave's Guitar Shop '57 Strat in in Taos Turquoise has the desert sand primer coat that you can see. Clapton's body was '56 with '56 plastics, which is why his knobs and covers are still white. Yours appears to have the newer formulation covers (probably with more butadiene in the ABS mix) and leftover "'56" knobs. There was a Strat featured on Norman's Rare Guitars channel recently with the same thing.
I saw your video about a Gibson Champ amp you bought for 500.00. Well I'm a poor boy and can't afford that kinda money but i did find a webster ekotape reel to reel for 15.00 bucks on ebay + shipping and bought it. It had the tubes in it, 5Y3, 6V6, and 2 6AV6s, which are single triodes. 2 of them equal a 12AX7. Well I built a Webster Ecotape Champ for less than a hundred bucks. It sounds so good I built 4 more. They all aren't 15.00 but of the ones I bought none over 50.00. Theres 50.00 bucks worth of tubes.
You never cease to amaze! It's good that you find these treasures. I'm sure they are in good hands plus we get to hear them.!! Can't wait to see inside this great old guitar. This thing is one year older than me . It's a real treat that you take the extra time to show this. Thanks again!
Matthew, the TONE of that Guitar is Outstanding, You are a Lucky Man to find this, When you played Hendrix at the beginning of the video, It Just Had That Jimi Sound, Clapton always played a Hard Tail, He still does, He is not a Trem Guy, I can go on For awhile about it but , Thanks for this Video here, Cousin Figel
I have a 2021 Squire stop tail. It is thin and it is cheap and I LOVE it! Don't get me wrong, I love tremolo.....but there is just something special about a stop tail. I should put new pickups and new tuners, but I didn't. I just did a set up and worked the frets and fingerboard, and I put a small pin-up sticker on it. Boom!!!!
I usually don't like the bridge position on a Strat, but wow that sounded great! I don't like a floating trem. I only like the 6 screw and then I deck it. I've always wanted a stop tail Strat.
Thru your cookin' amp, that sounds phenomenal, man! It looks so rad, too! The way it "relicc'ed"...so great - the checking ..and the forearm.wear thru patch....you got a good 'un. And the hard tail is ALL gravy to be, man! Strat Trems are barely worth the squeeze.. Getting that stronger toan when you hammer-strum it, the Toaan is noticeable...it's the first thing I noticed - before I knew it was a hardtail. Fkn GLORIOUS, lad! 'Grats. 🤘
Matthew, the grey primer was the standard automotive color of primer paint. The guitar and your playing sounds great. You always find cool guitars and amps. The prices have gone through the roof in the last three years, a 65 strat cost what a 57-59 did several years ago.
I never tried a hardtail, but I think the great cavity inside the trad Strat impacts on the way the thing behaves when you plug it in.. Even when you block the trem.. It just has a different touch sensitivity, maybe its bollocks but I think said cavity (people are surprised 1st time they see a Strat body senza plastico, if you will allow.. Cool demo as ever. Nice one Matthew! 🌟🎶👍
Thanks for the nod to the old reissue Strats of 1982. My '57 reissue, also in black, is from 1983, made at the Fender Fullerton factory. Sadly, the necks from these early-early reissues are nothing like true 1957 guitars. Fender went with what they thought would be much more accepted for the '80s. But all those reissues from that time (Tele, Strat (2), P-Bass (2) and Jazz Bass) were definitely iimportant guitars as Fender-CBS finally acknowledged that players wanted old looks and features from the classic years.
Ronnie Wood plays hardtail Strats (he played a black one when I saw the Stones live back in the early 90's on the Voodoo Lounge tour, in Amsterdam). I prefer them over regular Strats, (purely because I don't particularly dig trem systems) so I dig this guitar big time. The trem bar off my old '69 Strat has never once been put on the guitar (while I've owned her at least) & is still in the case lol.
New to the channel and love it already. The thing I take away most from your videos is how much your love for SRV shines through your playing. Thanks :)
Oh man, exactly what I needed after a long night of work. 7am, most people rising & shining, but I'm headed off to bed! No rest for the wicked! Great playing as usual, Mathew, and a beauty of a strat from long ago..I love all of it! Keep doing your thing, kid, you make me proud to play guitar.
A friend of mine has a refin Black 57. One of the best sounding Strats I’ve ever played. I wanted to tell you, another friend that I’ve lost touch with had a 1958 Pink Sunburst Strat, (he moved back to Chicago years ago). It was a special order from Fender a girl originally ordered. About the ugliest finish I ever saw. It was black on the outside edge, then went to pink and then white in the center. It was one of a kind and I’m sure it would be worth a fortune now. He bought it in the late 70’s real cheap, I think $500 back then. I was a Vintage Guitar Dealer so I’ve had many pre-CBS Strats. I have a few vintage Strats left but I’m not in such great health and don’t Gig or perform anymore. I enjoy your shows and your equip. We’re on the same page.
Sounds and looks great. I hope you will be using some of your great vintage guitars including the strat's on your upcoming album. Looking forward to your album, I hope the album is not overly worked and processed and allows for the true tone and sounds of your playing and guitars/vintage amps to come through as they do on your You Tube video's. From my point of view some of the best albums I have heard are the ones that have been recorded with a raw live feel; mainly recorded with room mics. For example the latest ZZ Top album called RAW.
Its always a pleasure to hear one of these guitars in the hands of someone who can really get the best out of it. I can play guitar but Mathew is at one with it. There will never be another guitar made In the original Fullerton California factory or on the original machinery and tooling. You can buy all the Fenders you want but it will never be the same. Leo Fender was indeed a genius
Never had a hardtail but I know I would prefer them. Trem strats are difficult to keep in tune for me. Hard to get the setup right. I keep my strats trems locked down with an extra spring
My dream strat. My first Stratocaster was a 1982 hardtail strat in Sienna Sunburst. Still love it. I just love the attack and the fact that it just doesn't go out of tune. Ron Wood prefers them this way. And Robert Cray off course. So I'm in good company. 😎
Smooth like butter, Sweet like honey. Thanks for making my day. I can't wait to get a full taste of your music when you release a full album of songs. Bless you.
Maybe a little off subject, but I would love to hear your thoughts on the new noiseless pickups comparison to older stratocaster pickups and new new single coils pickups. Everyone is chasing the older tones but has to work with newer equipment.
Man, that tone is suburb AF. I'm happy for you for finding this. You should be happy for me too. I bought a Kingfish signature Fender telecaster deluxe today and it is absolutely glorious in every single aspect. To digress, that strat is an utter dream and I'm incredibly jealous, but not in a bad way.
Clapton's Blackie was basically a blocked tremolo. So basically a Hardtail Strat. Beautiful guitar. I'd love to have something like that. 57 is my favorite year. Enjoy.
That ‘57 sounds fantastic in your hands Mathew. I bought a black one in ‘68 for $175 at a hock shop. It was original finish. I assumed it was a ‘57 or ‘58. Had so many guitars back then and no idea they would be so treasured today. Glad you found one! 👍🏻
Man I love your tone. Somehow you manage to wring a lot of feeling out of even the simple strummed chords. Great find, and looking forward to more videos on this one.
"He had a 57 Strat, plays behind his back". Lyrics from song on first Foreigner album. And black is The Color. My 1st Strat a 74 sunburst was a hardtail. Bought in 1976 for $300.
Hardtail Strat's are killer. And whatever happens to those pups over the decades is magical. Those 50's and early 60's single coils are unbelievable and deliver tone like nothing else. And you're wrong about vintage hardtail prices- they demand top dollar as there is a very dedicated hardtail Strat fan base.
That sounds fantastic.
I played Eric's Blackie in the 1980s, he used our rehearsal facility at Shepperton studio's UK, as did many other top artists like the Stones and Black Sabbath. You've got incredible control of the guitar. The bends, the feedback, the subtleties. Great guitar, great playing.
Thank you James 😎✌🏻
Feeeeeeling it!
That is the Best sounding strats I’ve ever heard from your channel!! Hold on to that one !!
Love hardtails. I have a 74 hardtail that I got for my 12th birthday in 1976. It was in the store, for two years, still brand new; nobody wanted it. It's not as cool as this 57, obviously, but it's still my favorite guitar.
Awesome that you still have it! I wish I still had my first Strat.
That's a sweet ax too though! Especially being a one owner bought new. Very nice!
I have a 74 hardtail, as well. They are great guitars!
Man, you’re really the kind of player that makes me immediately pick up my guitar. The tones, the gear, everything.
I just started playing, I'm 64 years old. I saw him bending those strings and it sounded great.

10:03 i have goosebumps in some part of ur videos. That bend. that tone. that playing.
the overtones ringing out at 7:50 are so sweet
Congrats on finding a true gem. We all know you will cherish it and make it sing for another 60 years!
Matthew, love your passion, presentation, playing and vintage content. Many thanks.
I heard that Clapton "Cocaine" in there followed by a subtle touch of "Wonderful Tonight". Great playing as always!
Boy, that guitar sounds SO sweet. Who even needs more than three pickup positions? Beautifully full, round tonality in each position. Rgds.

Thanks for the info! Yes I know the prices are insane and especially the 50s guitars. Surely this has to come down👍🏻
Man I've watched countless M Scott videos he's great guitarist especially blues. And those amps are just to die for!
