One thing I've found for escorts is not to have a dedicated combat ship to escort but instead have a pair of say miners both with mining lasers and some combat capability. Then send one miner out with the other as escort - that will both reduce the chance of ambush and increase the amount of stuff mined.

A nice pirate clearing or bounty from defending a sector usually pays for my crews - and the salvage is always a plus. Some sectors the pirates come faster than you can salvage the wrecks of the previous wave. If you think these battles are fun, wait until you meet up with the AI. *Didn't realize I could change the shape of the captain missions until I saw you do it. Always learning something new.

3:30 I'm surprised you haven't used the name from one of my favorite space games, Privateer. :) You could also try Scallywag, Blackguard, Brigand, Hooligan, Varlet, Marauder, Ravager, Picaroon, and Rogue. You could go Japanese anime on us and call one Outlaw Star. :)
okay so to solve your hyperspace issues you really need to farm bottan. Fill out the list 4 times just to be safe. you also need to farm swoks atleast 10 times that will solve your arming problems. for mining you actually want turrets and fighters. it increases your efficiency alot. for research only use three for whites and grays maybe greens. blue and above do atleast 4 also on turrets especially early don't mix materials you lose alot of dps that way.
You don't have to use all the same in research - for example I just chuck in all my pettys in threes no matter what they are so say a mining upgrade, battery upgrade and a turret upgrade - you will end up one of those types either common or petty.

Have you run into THE AI yet? I'd forgotten about that but I'm playing on Normal difficulty and I had a escort so wasn't too bad. Yes, merchant and salvage fleets FTW.
Researching 3 is just throwing away stuff... If you want to save a few components it's a looooot safer to use 4. You will lose more than you save when you use 3 at the research station. Whoever told you to use 3 must have been trolling you. And sell the sphynxes they will pay for your cargo licenses which are permanent sphinx's
nope, you don't seem to understand how to run a trade run, if you use the heat map to find a hot a cold sector within your jump range and never ever buy from a and sell to B but buy from a purple or blue area and sell in a yellow or red area you will but at -19 to -20 buy and sell at +29 to +30 now you can't do the run in like 5 minutes it takes like 20 to buy and like 12 to sell or so, thus a bigger freighter with more cargo space is ideal, I used a Yonka MKI Miner/Freighter 2,500 cargo hold and after a couple runs I had a storage module that expanded the ship storage, excellent boost to cash flow. You could go bigger they have several of these miner/freighter designs but this baby one was pounding out +5M a run for me when I did like 4 runs to get some money I know you're drowning in money now so it seems silly to talk about making 5M every like 30 minutes.

Did you know if you aim really well with manual guns you can blow turrets off of ships this will be helpful later when you send boarding crews out
Also you can zoom in for sniping by holding right click and scrolling.

Cannons are great as a main weapon. I like having plasma weapons to deal with shields and either lasers or chainguns to deal with missiles, though.

In addition the research station you use also has an effect on the tech level you get back. Closer to the center, the higher the tech level.
Outfit the Buccaneer with the best weapons, tell it to go shopping.
