Woodworking: How to make a sliding lid box

- This quick and simple wood box is great for the beginner and pro. They make great pencil, wine, and other gift boxes. You can use just about any wood from scrap wood to exotic woods to make this.
I'm wanting to dive into more than just turning bowls and such. I want to make keepsake boxes and maybe even a humidor. Heck, a lot of furniture is just bigger boxes aren't they?

I use plastic drinking straws to scoop the excess glue from the corners, but never thought about using tape like that. Nice Work!

@@jarmstrong2843 I usually grow it out in the winter. Too hot in Phoenix for a long beard in the summer. I'm getting more grey and less red these days.
I made one of these last night having not seen your video. Came up with the same design😀. I inlaid some walnut strips on the outside so it looks like continuous bands. I've been looking to make an urn and I think I will be using a modified version of this. Cool box👍
Thank you for watching! There are so many things you can do with this design. Like you added the walnut for accent, you can do all types of things like that. The other thing is you can play with the dimensions to make a lot of different boxes. - Ed

Nice project...rather than clamps for small boxes I often use several rubber bands to hold the box together with even, gentle pressure whilst the glue hardens.

Nice box, they are fun to make. Try using white glue mixed with sawdust. White glue dries clear, yellow glue doesn’t dry clear and can darken the filler. Especially on lighter woods

Pro tip....apply danish oil to the bottom before gluing into the sides/front/back. This will help when the wood moves to hide unfinished wood.
Will the glue still adhere to the wood surface after the oil is applied?

What kind of clamp is that? I am very interested in starting to make small boxes. Are there any small table saws that have adjustable blades for the depth and angles? Your videos have been very helpful!! Love it
I only found this video after digging but I'm glad I saw it. How did you finish cleaning up the pieces where you cut the top of the side off for the lid?
Thank you for watching Randy! You can clean up the glue in the corners using a straw where you cut a 45 degree angle on it. It works really well and cleaning them up. - Ed
Nice little project. I like seeing it done w/o all the fancy and expensive tools. One question here. Did you consider wood expension for the lid and bottom in the grooves? If so, what was your safety space? Thanks a lot! Rick
Thank you Rick! It's been a year and it's held up pretty well. So far there has been no issue with wood expansion. It might be different if I live in a climate that had more changes in humidity. Here in Arizona, it pretty much stays around 10 to 20% humidity. Take care! - Ed

Thank you Bill! I do like it and it's been great on some particularly stubborn Maple. The planer kept tearing out pieces, but the drum sander did the trick. It's my first one so I don't have any experience with others. I don't think you will go wrong with the Jet. - Ed

Nice build! Hmmm... It just occurred to me that if you mount the lid to the underside of something--a shelf, a workbench, etc.--then the box becomes a removable drawer! (If you standardize the sizes, then you can attach a row of 'lids' to the bottom of your workbench surface and then, when you are working on a particular project, you can just grab the drawers containing what you need from their storage areas and slide them into place at your workbench. Everything you need will be right at hand, but out of the way. You could also have larger 'drawers' that bridge two--or more--lids.)

How long did it take you?
Would a chop saw cut the 45s ok. Is there a reason to use table saw instead?

There's nothing that makes me madder than cutting a miter in the wrong direction. Well... maybe forgetting 2 lock the fence down. I put a piece of tape on the outside of every piece, then I know that side always faces up. Haven't cut it wrong since. Thx 4 the vid.
