This car will be the perfect teaching instrument for your 16 year old kids... Welcome to manhood and congratulations you're in debt for the rest of your life just like mom and dad.
i was previously a ferrari technician and just wanted to add my 2 cents on some points. the interior issues mentioned are a HUGE problem and money pit, but are mostly related to temperature and the driver. the leather, due to it being natural and mostly untreated, is EXTREMELY prone to shrinkage from heat, ESPECIALLY the headliner which will more than likely begin to sag at some point due to the only thing holding it up being adhesive. the second largest interior issue is the soft touch material on the plastic surfaces. when the oil on your hand mixes with the animal fats used to make the soft touch, it begins to degrade and get goopy and nasty over time which practically every surface will require refinishing at some point. this was also a issue on previous models but is more prominent in the newer cars due to the larger amount of plastic surfaces. there are very large brake ducts in the rear on the bottom of the rear under tray, which i dont believe was mentioned. the engine fire issues were caused by adhesive used on the rear wheel wells to hold the heat insulation on, this was later fixed by riveting the insulation to the wheel wells and i believe the parts were recalled so i wouldnt consider it an issue or a reason to avoid a certain model year. the transmission issues were the insulation for the wire chaffing that was not installed was not exclusive to those model years and fails rather quickly, i would be more concerned about the trans leaking..which it will. again not a reason imo to avoid a specific year range of the car. also, the transmissions are not particularly fragile and can handle quite a bit of abuse. the fuel system issues mentioned were mainly related to evap pumps failing which effects the entire model range, and most notably the fuel filler neck cracking due to improper use while filling which is very common and effects all cars. its just more common in the rear engine models due to the angle of the filler neck. the exhaust flaps will open regardless of manettino position depend and on load and throttle position and lastly, an eventual issue that happens on all of them is the exhaust ports for the egr will clog with carbon and require the headers to be removed to clean great video guys, awesome car. my recommendation would be to buy a porsche for less and still beat a 458 on track ;)

Needless to say, I stay off the roads when school lets out.
@@hamsterama For what it’s worth, I’m an intuitive learner - I learn by trial and error and doing things myself, so when I got my first vehicle, it has 4.0L of power going straight out to the rear wheels and I spent tons of time on country lanes and old back roads figuring out the nuances of the thing. When I got my first car shortly thereafter, it was equipped with Quattro AWD, which is based on a FWD architecture, and I had to spend a lot of time relearning vehicle dynamics of front versus rear and 4WD vs AWD. Both made considerable power for a learner, but I took the time to get a feel for the dynamics of both in all weather conditions and figured out the limits of my skills and of the cars. Years later, I’ve gone through vehicles with upwards of 400 HP and remained mostly safe on the road. I pulled my fair share of dumb stunts as a kid, but sometimes we just have to learn. And with all of the smart safety features and electronic safety systems in place, they’ll be a lot less likely to get themselves into dangerous situations. So long as they aren’t reliant on those systems, so long as they stay off their phones, and so long as they understand what’s at stake, many will be perfectly fine, even with immense power on tap!
You guys did this car justice. Being ridiculous at times fits the tone perfectly. The exterior shots were beautiful, the driving was mesmerizing on a fall day like that and the tech truly informative.
I still remember one of the first times I saw one of these. My friends and I were on Highway 17 going from San Jose to Santa Cruz, around lunch time with mild traffic. Most people brake through the tight turns. All of a sudden the glorious crack of downshifting from a 458 becomes audible to everyone, and we look in the mirrors to see it weaving through traffic smoothly and accelerating towards us. We had just completed one of the tight turns and had a quarter mile straight in front of us, so the 458 was WOT through the end of the turn while passing us; it is one of our favorite memories. I look forward to the day I get to drive a 458.
It just sounds so amazing! As for reliability, a Ferrari buyer goes into it knowing it's not an Accord. It's going to cost a fortune to fix, but for them, the experience is worth it.
Drove one of these recently and everything they say is true. You feel everything. Its exilerating. The engine is a punchy, high revving masterpiece. Like they say its not refined or comfortable but it's addictive. Everytime you floor it and turn in to a corner you're reminded of why you love cars and driving. Incredible
I was working for Ferrari as a detailer when these were released, I have more then my fair share of cockpit time in them. Copiloted one with a tech at 130mph in a 1/4 mile blast, still can feel the acceleration, 9 years later.
It's my favorite "regular" Ferrari of the last 20 years. Im so glad the owner let you guys do a full piece on this. I think you did a 458 quick review years ago, but you only had about an hour with it. I think the 458 is also the best looking Ferrari of the past 20 years, bar none.
Outstanding video. At 23:03 Mark looks visibly melancholic-probably wondering to himself "when will I ever get to drive one of these, or anything this good, ever again?" Stellar work, as always!
Excellent video, Mark! I just got out of a 458 Spyder for my 10,000 sub video and shared a lot of the same impressions you mentioned here. Last of the naturally aspirated V8s from Maranello and that F1 derived DCT was DOMINATING. The theater on something like this and the flaws you mentioned make it, in my eyes, better than pretty much every modern supercar. Glad you enjoyed your time with the 458!
I rented one of these during a vacation a couple years ago. I agree with everything you said when you’re out on open roads and can enjoy it. But I found it miserable for city driving. The accelerator is very sensitive and you’re constantly banging between first and second gear. I would love to drive a gt3, I think that would be my dream car after driving the 458 (which had been my dream car).
While 10 plus years old, it is expected to be dated. However, the 458 redefined modern day exotics. Driving position, ergonomics, tactile feel was amazing.

if you can afford a Ferrari you can afford a nice German car like bmw or benz for the daily drive a Ferrari is a rich man toy and the fact that its a toy it must be exciting it must look good it must be fast and most importantly it must be dramatic in its operation and sound everything else is secondary.

The audio quality of this channels videos is just fantastic. Most car channels spend all their time and energy making the visuals perfect with lots of arty drone shots but use shit audio equipment and lose the plot completely on a huge part of what makes these cars desirable - the sound. The audio when you’re driving the shit out of that engine is just phenomenal. Great visuals always but your audio quality is top notch.

Holy crap, I've seen a few car videos at this point, and, man o man, the engine sound on this - through video sound - is truly unique and amazing! You can really hear the "track-iness" of the shifts and revs. I was never really a fan of Ferrarri, but that engine induction is something else and makes me look at the car differently.
The 458 is an amazing vehicle. Love this review. Seems like an R8 V10 might be a better choice. Still sounds great but has better build quality and cheaper and you only sacrifice the slightly more dynamic handling of the 458.
What a perfect summation for how I feel. Ferrari was my #2 favorite car company (behind Mazda, yes I'm serious lol) up until the time when they stopped making manual cars. I still like some of the post-manual cars (599, California, 458, and LaFerrari cuz GORGEOUS)...but they haven't been 'FERRARI!' for me in quite some time. I mean absolutely no disrespect as I still finding them amazing, but I don't follow what they're making much these days and haven't driven a new one in quite a while and haven't tried to find a way to do so. They just don't have the same character as they did back then. They're hilariously faster, and incredibly more capable than the older cars, but they just don't have 'it' anymore for ME. I understand that kids/young people these days will grow up with this as their poster on the wall, but man I wish they could have seen the cars from the early to mid '00's and the older stuff before they decided to refine away all the edges. Ferrari was king for another reason besides speed. 👌 Give me a manual F355 or F360 any day over any modern Ferrari and I'd gladly take the reliability and service issues along with the much much much slower speeds lol. I'd be grinning all the way 😎👌
Watching Mark drive this thing trying his best not to giggle like a school boy made my day. The sound of the engine makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Fabulous. It begs the question why Ferrari doesn't make a N/A engines anymore. This car with a manual transmission would be amazing. Driving enjoyment isn't about 0-60, or Nurburgring lap times. It's about emotion and satisfaction, which the 458 delivers in spades. Big shout out to the owner who was generous and gracious enough to let SG do a review so we can all enjoy it, instead of it being a garage queen that never sees real road use. I for one appreciate it.
I dont have a 458 but I do have a BRZ Limited (leather interior, heated seats, all the options) that I wanted to own since high school. And I smile every time I drive it! So, close enough to a Ferrari for now with my current budget.

I may one day have enough money to buy a Ferrari, but I doubt I’ll ever be rich enough to own a Ferrari.
Unless I liberty walk it, I don't want a Ferrari. I'd rather get a gallardo spyder
Yes, there IS a distinction, isn't there - between having the money to buy it, and the commitment to spending a large yearly sum to insure it and keep it running properly and house it securely (while keeping your eye on the rearview mirror, to watch for suspicious characters following you home at night).

During the drive, the explanation of the experience sums it up perfectly. I use to own a 600hp 300zx, but had the chance to drive a F355. The Ferrari was turtle slow to my 300zx..... But holy crap so much fun to drive. Mainly due to the engine note, right behind your ear.
Glad you could drive the F355, beautiful car
I love how Mark just keeps stomping on it over and over. Nothing beats a good Ferrari!

I own a 2011 458 with 40,000 kms and it looks nothing like the one you have just reviewed. I‘ve looked after my car and even though I live in a harsh climate country the car is always garaged and the the interior still looks and smells new, the only problem is the rubber on some of the switch gear. I hate to say it but I would be very surprised if the mileage on that particular car is genuine looking at the condition of that car. I can also confirm that my car has given me very little problems and has been very reliable, my advice would be buy a well maintained and clean example and you will grin from ear to ear every time you take it for a drive. Finally a really enjoyable and well presented review.

There's a large section of the Midwestern suburb I live in, that is upper middle class to lower upper class (doctor and lawyer types). Anyway, it's not an uncommon sight to see little Johnny driving mommy and daddy's Porsche Macan or Mercedes GLS. Terrifies me that such inexperienced drivers are behind the wheel of that much power.
Love it when you guys get to review exotic cars. Realistic and technical perspective is often missing in videos about exotic cars.
Incredible

It's my favorite "regular" Ferrari of the last 20 years. Im so glad the owner let you guys do a full piece on this. I think you did a 458 quick review years ago, but you only had about an hour with it. I think the 458 is also the best looking Ferrari of the past 20 years, bar none.

I agree. It's absolutely gorgeous.

*Maranello noises intensify*
I rented one of these during a vacation a couple years ago. I agree with everything you said when you’re out on open roads and can enjoy it. But I found it miserable for city driving. The accelerator is very sensitive and you’re constantly banging between first and second gear. I would love to drive a gt3, I think that would be my dream car after driving the 458 (which had been my dream car).
a manual 992 GT3 is number one on my list because of the tranny. 458 italia is number two because it's the sexiest car ever made, but not a manual.
While 10 plus years old, it is expected to be dated. However, the 458 redefined modern day exotics. Driving position, ergonomics, tactile feel was amazing.
You guys remind me of the two valets driving the Ferrari in Feriss Buellers day off.

that interior looks like trash.
if you can afford a Ferrari you can afford a nice German car like bmw or benz for the daily drive a Ferrari is a rich man toy and the fact that its a toy it must be exciting it must look good it must be fast and most importantly it must be dramatic in its operation and sound everything else is secondary.

With a front drive delete, yes.
And the look...
Just watching Mark's face during the drive is exactly why I watch savagegeese. Brilliant episode.
17:48 don't think I have seen Mark this happy before
What a perfect summation for how I feel.
Give me a manual F355 or F360 any day over any modern Ferrari and I'd gladly take the reliability and service issues along with the much much much slower speeds lol. I'd be grinning all the way 😎👌
That face Jack makes when you floored it is going to be a Meme
@17:32 when a car makes Jack look like he's getting sloppy top, the manufacturer hit it out of the park.
I'm tellin' ya Goose, an hour-long album of just engine noise would sell like hot cakes.
