I actually like the look of 458 more than later V8 Ferraris, Especially the F8. I think The 458 has a cleaner design than later models
The F8 is gorgeous!! I love the 458 but the F8 is more gorgeous!
458 Speciale is perfect
I think she's a modern classic
@@MarcSob22 not with those ugly side intakes it ain't, the 458 is so much cleaner
@@TheFlyingPineapple plus the F8 looks too much like the sf90, diluting the exclusivity of the more expensive car
F8 has the better rear, love the tail lights. But it's a turbo
Henry Catchpole always has a sore back because he carries automotive journalism
😂😂😂
Top Gear tried to make him one of their hosts, but they couldn't afford him.
If I had to own a car for the rest of my life, this would be it.
Or the Speciale
Same :)
Too impractical. Id have an m5
@@awaischaudhary1162 Who buys a Ferrari for practicality?
@@gaccsi1762 i assume he meant if he could have only one car for the rest of his life, in which case it would be impractical.
Clearly Ferrari design peaked with this car, they just didn't look as good after the Italia. This thing aged like a fine wine
to be fair this was the last pininfarina designed ferrari. So the 488 was a new beginning for in house designed ferraris.
488 Pista is stunning
@@knutjonsson1816 yeah that and the f8 are beautiful imo but the regular 488 gtb and spider aren't as appealing to me. seems like they got it right after the first trial.
Well, I _do_ like the post-458 models too like the 488 but yes, I largely agree: this was the purest design and is indeed objectively Timeless.
The curve-integration by definition means this visually cannot look outdated from an engineering aspect.
I swear every time Ferrari release a new V8 model, it just makes the 458 look better and better. Love it ♥
People like aggressive looks on Supercars just like Lambo cars or Mclaren or current Ferraris....... but what made 458 so special it's the fact it's not aggressive at all, it's just pure design, it's an ART than just aero vents..... What a fitting name calling track focused version (458 Speciale)!
I really think 458 design is underrated (as an previous owner of the car)
Please tell us more about your ownership experience
@@Carfection it's tricky, loved the car specially on track, at the same time I owned 981 Cayman GTS I used to go pickup the 458 on weekends and some other days in parking facility, everytime I jump into 458 I always ask myself do I really want to be in it or continue on that Cayman GTS and the answer was Cayman GTS which sounds crazy!
Since driving around in a 300K supercar is not a always a great feel, you have to be careful with it, you have to worry about mileage (due to resale value), scratches, accidents.
Best part about owning it though as a supercar is the 7 years free maintenance + unlimited mileage warranty (basically didn't have to pay a single penny on it except for tyres, since even brakes are carbon ceramics which last forever).
Driving wise on track was really good, didn't second guess myself which car I wanted to drive, it's very playful kinda go kart feel but softer, the systems are there to make you play in confidence.
What felt more special? Bit of a silly question I know. I had a Cayman 981, Guards Red GTS styling. It was a great car but the 458 is my dream car. Especially because of that sound.
I currently own a 911 997 4S but as I get older, my desire for Ferrari's are slowly fading. Mainly due to stories of people saying they need engine rebuilds at 30k miles etc....
It sounds a bit strange, but I work hard and run my own company just so one day I can own a car like this and have financial freedom.
I love to drive my cars, and the idea that every time you get in the car, you're worried about depreciation and requiring tons of work after even a small amount of miles, makes super exotic car ownership so uninspiring.
@@radeon08 If you ask me I preferred the sound of 981 Cayman GTS over 458 from inside, it gives more feel more drama more intake sound, you enjoy more of the sound because it's slower car also....
458 to enjoy it's sound you need to reach that near 9000rpm mark which is difficult on road, don't get me wrong it sounds amazing, but after awhile I got kinda got little bored to 458 sound compared to GTS.... from outside 458 sounds simply better and looks far better of course.
What I really liked about 458 is the very fast steering, it was a standout for me + interior, it might got more outdated but when it first came it was very special interior even today tbh........ I also owned Ferrari F12 and I prefer 458 over it tbh, F12 feels too heavy and large for me, 458 is like a toy..... But the sound of V12 in F12 is simply unbeatable with small mod (to have exhaust flaps mod done since it closes under certain rpm unlike 458)....
So for me car sound is different interior than exterior, some cars sound more special inside compared to outside, for example 991.2 GT2RS doesn't sound special outside but inside damn it's a theater of emotions.
As for ownership, yeah it's difficult to enjoy these Supercars if you worried about your losing value compared to buying Cayman or 911, as for 30K mile engine dying that's nonsense I believe the F12 I put on it 42K miles not a single engine issue even with trackdays
@@TRX25EX thanks for giving us your insights. I think it also speaks to just how well the engineers at Porsche have nailed down the Cayman package.
The car nearly everyone thinks of when you say "Ferrari", love this thing
Enzo has that, but this is way more realistic and nearly as good
Even a decade and bit on since it was introduced, the 458 is still utterly beautiful 😃🤩👍. The 458/458 Speciale will be future classics, being the last purely natural aspirated V8s before Ferrari moved onto turbocharging for the 488/F8 replacements. Great content as always :)
For me, the car is more beautiful today than 10 years ago.
Agreed. My buddy has a 2015 458 Speciale that he bought 4 years ago for $400,000. It’s worth slightly more than that now…
Couldn't agree more.
This car is 10+ years old and somehow hasn’t aged.
I think it’s really interesting. Ferrari’s last pininfarina car, I think the last of montezemolo’s v8s and many other things. I say interesting because it’s not a car that everyone knows for 1 thing (Renault 5 = Group b and 80s, etc), but it’s also a very weird and imo quite special car, because there’s not much else exactly like it.
The 458 has never been my favorite, I love my 80s and 90s wedges too much, but I will say it is aging far better than I thought it would when it came out. Nicely done, Pininfarina!
Everytime I see a 458 on the road I turn down my radio and roll down my windows to hear that engine.
Out of all "modern" designs, the 458 and the P1 both still look as if they were introduced last week. Beautiful cars.
And the 918 Porsche
I'll never forget, around a decade ago, when the company I was at went public, one of our devs sold his shares and bought one of these. Smart lad. Seeing that right red rear end one morning in the garage was pretty wild. Looks better in person than in video, imo.
Thanks Henry. Now I finally have a video backing me up when I inevitably have to explain to my parents why I spent that kinda money on a single car :)
Why be financially stable when you can have a screaming N/A V8 that can burn down any second?

Same. I’ve been sending the website article everyone 😂😂 haters going to hate mate.
Arguably the first Ferrari to be as exactly as good to drive as it was to look at!?!
f355
F40
Not 'arguably'. Definitely!
Very good point you made about of firsts and lasts. First mid-engine V8 Ferrari offered without a manual gearbox, last one with a naturally aspirated V8. The 458 truly represents a turning point in the history of the performance car
I remember seeing the Top Gear film on this car and also, the fact that this was the cover for Forza Motorsport 4, I just knew this was something important, and 10 years later I truly believe this is the best Rear Mid Enigne modern Ferrari (You know the Speciale being a variant of this 😅)
You have to remember, the F8 and the 488 are just 458s with vents scoped out of the body work. They're still beautiful, but the 458 is how Pinin Farina designed it, before ferrari chopped into the design.
It's wild how happy a 458 makes me. I'd hazard a guess that this is THE Ferrari for a lot of people who grew up in the early 2000's (still my absolute dream car)
I don't care that the 458 isn't the quickest, I just love it for the looks, the amazing sound, and the prestige of it being a Ferrari ties it all together to make it a special occasion every time you drive it or even just look at it parked or driving by.
I was four or five when this came out. The novelty should have worn out by now. But it's still every bit as special, somehow.
Great video . The 458 is a beauty and timeless design. I drove a 458 and 488 back to back and preferred the 458 and bought one . Don’t plan on ever selling it
....younger Ferrari buying people Henry....mmmm around late 50's then :)
Wishing all the guys and girls at Carfection a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year!!!! Hope all your families and loved ones are well this Christmas!! Your car video editing just keeps getting better and better!! Keep up the good work!!
Oh and there is a....reason...Mr Catchpole that your youtube car reviews are some of the most sought after in here. Your research and depth of knowledge that you put into every video you produce, and most importantly, you're a cartuber that keeps his feet on the ground, owning and driving regularly old hot hatches and the like, cars that us car enthusiasts still drive! I think that alone gives you that bit extra, that most cartubers don't have anymore these days! Cheers Henry! I'll be on your gander in 2022!!!!
picked one up 2020, spent last two years ripping this thing and it is the most visceral driving machine, can't stop driving it
I know this certainly isn't the first time Henry's driven one of these and he did a great written article for Evo some years ago where he went through the mid-engine V8 Ferraris, but I'm still a little disappointed he didn't have a little bit more of a deeper dive into the car this time, too. I know that's not the point of this series, though.
I'm a partial to the 360 Modena as my favorite mid-engine Ferrari, but the 458s really do have quite a presence in person.
If I could invest in a 458, i wouldn't need to invest in a 458 😂
What a specimen! Looks amazing in spider form as well. One of the last great N/A V8s.
The Speciale/Aperta should value pretty nicely for years to come.
Lovely car and I think it gets better looking with every passing year. I actually remember thinking, about 10 years ago, that this car was aging badly when compared to the competition. How wrong I was. That simplicity in design just looks amazing now, much like the F355 - another great looking mid engine V8.
As a Gen Z 'er, this car is pretty much the car I'm sought after if I'm rich enough to eventually acquire one.
This has been the car of my dreams since the day it was released.
I still wish the 458 Italia came out later and with a V12.
Best looking car I've seen next to the 2013 Aston Martin Vanquish
V12 Enzo engine🥰
This is THE FERRARI for me. I have always known Ferrari as fast cars maker, but F458 is what make me recognized what separates Ferrari from Lambo and Porsches and the likes of it.
Stunning production and shots per the usual Carfection!
This was a peak for Ferrari in so many ways. Design has aged beautifully, the drivetrain is special and the interior and technology manages to hold up even today without feeling too outdated. And of course, the driving experience above it all is signature Ferrari!
This is "my" Ferrari. I don't love cars in general and think of them mainly as tools but the 458 has a special place in my heart. If I ever get the chance to own one I would probably walk into my garage just to look at it and walk around it ever day.
Drove one of these on the track in Vegas in 2012. I can still remember the downshifts after all these years !!
Absolutly most briliant car ever made
The 458 sounds great, looks great, and evidently is a dream to drive. I've wanted one of these since I first saw one racing in the WEC.
Couldn't agree more!
I think the 458 Spider is even more special. It will always be one of my all time favourite along with the F12 Berlinetta.
To this day, this car is still THE modern Ferrari to me. Certainly not the fastest, nor the most exclusive, but in terms of what Ferrari is, it always seemed to me that the 458 is the modern baseline. It was also the genesis of an entire family of quintessential modern Ferraris - the 488, the F8, etc. Not to mention one of the very few cars that actually manages to balance aggressiveness with elegance, appearance-wise. Great stuff.
458s and gt3s are solid supercars
I think Hagerty is right to be bullish on the 458. That was one of the reasons I decided to buy mine last year, as I didn't want to be potentially priced out in the future. That said, I also lucked out and was able to find one exactly how I wanted it. Great video!
Italians named this car a Italia. There isn’t more than this praise when they made something.
It's definitely something coming from a company with so much pride as Ferrari
Iconic & beautiful video. So tired of all the nostalgia heads sugar-coating outdated 'icons' that look like a flattened VHS cassette on wheels these days, clearly limited by lack of Computer-aided design (ahem! Mclaren F1, etc.)
Thank you! 👍
Such an awsome car to drive....The sound of the engine and the responsiveness of the clutch are breathtaking. To me surely the best "non special edition" Ferrari V8 car!! LOVE IT
The F12 and 458 are the best-looking modern Ferraris to my eye. They look as though they had been hand-drawn, while the cars that came after looked to have been designed by engineers in wind tunnels
Henry is the best auto journalist out there
This prediction fell flat two years later. I guess high interest rates and high inflation will always put a dampener on fun cars.
THE dream car.
The 458 will forever be a timeless beauty.
I always liked how in the Speciale, you could hold down the downshift paddle and it'll downshift for you without you having to shift each downshift
Definitely prefer the 458 over 488 and F8 all day long. That NA V8 engine, especially in the Speciale model, sounds glorious. Jeremy Clarkson could mock James May's 458 Speciale when he nominated the 488 Pista as his Supercar of the Year in 2019, but May would definitely be having his last laugh when it comes to secondhand values.
I can’t wait for the Vanagon video. I was at a cars and coffee a week ago, and I walked past a few 991.2 GT3’s to look at a high roof syncro in the corner.
I'm a die hard Aston Martin fan and that has always been my dream car but if I had to pick a non Aston dream car it would have to be this. I had the privilege of driving a 458 Italia and it was superb, the engine note was glorious and I couldn't get the smile off my face. There will be much quicker cars in this day and age but the 458 Italia is the one I would have
My favourite car of all time!
Well done, Henry!
The 458 GT-3 sounded soooooo good.
I love the 458!! Specially the 458 Speciale Aperta!!
The Speciale is cool but the Aperta is another level
Henry and 458.....perfection 👌
The last truly beautiful Ferrari, stunning car
There's just something about the 458 that is remarkable 🙌
This is Ferrari's design peak for their mid engined cars !
They say that but it is rubbish. It is for investment and Carfection is now doing adverts. Heyho.
Think the 458 marked the resurrection of Ferrari. Their line up has been absolutely superb since the 458. The 430 looks terrible in comparison and look at the number of amazing cars they have brought out since then. Stunning and with that V8. Though a return to simple interiors and steering wheel would be great no doubt.
I love the 458. I was hoping it would depreciate more to around £90,000 but I guess it’s now or never
I just paid £155k in may for a 2014 with 7k miles and every carbon option. From the dealer. I could sell now and make a profit.
They’re not going down.
@@adamellistutorials Realy is that true, I just bought a 2012 from HR Owen for 137k 6500. Miles and mint. I was hoping they would drop but bit the bullet and went for it.
I've grown tired of all the iterations of 458 (Probably why I like Roma so much), but not the 458 itself. It's near perfect in form and function.
I have a speciale. Never selling it!
No other new Ferraris managed to look and sound this good since…
At 103k its attainable....and more iconic than some supercars at a million.
One of the best looking modern cars I can think of.
I got to drive one of these for my fortieth - lovely thing. Felt like a bigger more powerful Elise to me. Still 300-400k AUD over here 😪
More like 380-500
Not just one of the best looking cars of all time, but simply one of the greatest supercars ever made. The modern day F40
These are awesome cars. If I could have one of these and a 991.2 GT3 RS I would be DONE!
amazing sound, timeless design, rw, v8, light and its a Ferrari. What more do you need in your life?
I'd be pretty happy with that
I watched the launch the release of the 458 through the Gran Turismo 5 trailer. And also found London Electricity thats now in the playlist rotation.
My all time favorite. A small part thanks to Gran Turismo 5's amazing trailer.

Last of the good looking V8 Ferraris.
The Ferrari 458 is an iconic car, like not many others. The Maserati GranTurismo is another example. I am very lucky to own both and drive them every time it is possible 💪🏻
The C8 Z06 is the 458’s spiritual successor.
