    The plane had been parked for several days. I came out to get it ready for a flight. This is the process it goes through during power up.
    I show on a Boeing 777 how to start the apu and power up systems and BITE.

    Dear bigirontv, I hope you are doing well. This video is really interesting and informative. I love the 777. I hope you can make more videos like this. Thanks

    Wow, i literally hate everything about it
    The complete lack of feedback, the total lack of analog controls

    Thanks for making this video! Are there any lights connected to the hot battery bus that you can turn on before connecting the battery, or is it normal to just use a flashlight?

    I am curious. The 777 doesn't have a pre-start checklist for the APU? Checking fire suppression systems etc? Especially if it's cold and dark for several days. I would want to make sure the canisters are good. I used to fly the 75 and 73 so just going by those systems.

      There is a pre start for the APU if we already are connected to external power.

      +BigIronTV My oldest son is 14, and is very interested in aviation. We are thinking about enrolling him in the EAA Young Eagles program. I just want to be sure this is something he really wants to persue before we sign him up.

      not a pilot. Flight mechanic on a private 777. I wear the uniform of a first officer during flight operations. But I do not fly the plane or sit in the pilot seats.

      If I had to guess, emits and listens to the sounds and captures it back via microphones to test if they are audible

    No fire test before startup? How would you know if there was an APU fire with no other systems turned on yet?

    • @BigIronTV
      @BigIronTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      +Deniz Durgut Great comment. The fire test only is active when electricity is provided to the plane. This means having a ground power cable connected and the airplane systems already powered up. Then you do the test prior to the initiating the APU start sequence. The Boeing maintenance manual instructs that if you did not have electric power prior to the APU start then once it is up and running and providing power to the systems that you conduct the test at that time. We very rarely ever have external power for APU start up. So it is normal for us to do the test after the APU is up and running. Late last year we were having trouble with our APU electric starter motor. It would not spool the APU up fast enough and this resulted in hung start. This is when the fuel ignites but the turbine does not accelerate and the heat increases. The APU will sense this condition and auto shut down. I also noticed that the overheat warning system set off the Fire/Overheat horn located on the nose gear above the tires. It is so loud you can hear is for a very long distance. So there is a degree of detection and protection even without the entirety of the system powered.

      All you can do is to just put on the standby power to batt position which brings up of your captains display and switch to mfd to check for stat message on apu!(standby to batt with main battery on)

      But that still won't allow you to make a fire test.
      STS MSG and FIRE TEST are not the same!

      Some airports have APU time limits due to air quality limitations
