  • Today we dive into Scottish rock band SIMPLE MINDS. "Waterfront" was the lead single from the band's sixth studio album Sparkle In The Rain released in 1984. Some pretty cool Simple Minds / INXS / U2 comparisons going on in this episode!

    great song!
This song turned me into a fan of their music. I got to see them live in 1985, great concert :) Fave songs are "Love Song", "Someone, Somewhere in Summertime", and of course "Don't You"

Simple Minds have one of the very best live albums of all time: Live in the City of Light.
They altered some of their songs for live performances. The song East at Easter is from the same album as Waterfront, the live version on City of Light is slowed down, stripped back and totally spine-tingling.

I'm in Ireland and I love both Simple Minds and U2.
Similar in some ways yes, but both still very different. It definitely wasn't one or the other for me.
I saw Simple Minds first in Dublin in Croke Park in 1986 when I was 18 and they were absolutely magnificent for one hour and fifty minutes.
Plus they had no less than FOUR great bands on before them including The Waterboys and Lloyd Cole And The Commotions which turned the day into a mini festival almost. That really was value for money!
    What a day!
Actually you should check out another great Scottish guitar rock band called Big Country who were also very much compared to both U2 and Simple Minds even though they had their own instantly recognisable unique sound.
You won't go wrong having a peek down that particular rabbit hole!

Wow what a great show you got to see in 1986! Amazing year for music BTW 😎 Big Country are definitely a fav of mine (RIP Stuart adamson) they could really rock out 🤟🏼 ("Were Not In Kansas") , always loved their vibe. "Fields Of Fire" on The Crossing album was epic 😎

I was hooked on Simple Minds from Life in day but my first live was Edinburgh playhouse opening track Water Front this abstract love letter to the River Clyde and the difference between Simple Minds and U2 (who I like) is Simple Minds have less ego it’s more about the music

After growing up in the US (in the land of KROQ for those who know hardcore New Wave trivia) loving them and then living in their hometown of Glasgow before COVID (which we left and came home for), they have an even more special to me. One of my co workers dated one of them, I was planning to see them live in UK but then COVID.

Loved Simple Minds back in early high school. Never heard it back in the day but couldn't help but get Walk on By vibes on this revisit! The guitar and bigger/longer vocals especially.
Edit: I saw Simple Minds support INXS in 2010 so interesting Ty mentioned the comparison.

@@reactionextraction yes JD out front in 2010. Some say there is no INXS after MH, but in my view JD gave us the chance to see the boys one more time! He was not as talented as the great MH, but he has some swagger and injected some energy and did well imo. And ofc the band still rocked.
Just checked and it was 2011, also found out JD was born the same year as me, dam thought he was younger....it could have been me up there!!

I was always a fan of both Simple Minds and U2 - good music is good music. I saw Simple Minds in 1982 on their return to Australia after supporting Ice House, when they had yet to break really big. Their album New Gold Dream is one I can still play from start to finish without wanting to skip any song. Brilliant and still going. Love them.

Great song, love Simple Minds and U2, you both are spot on with the INXS similarity and U2 being huge in the USA and not as big in the UK, I think the problem with U2 was/is the hate they have for the British Government and that will in turn means that some UK citizens are not going to like them. U2 are a highly political band and sometimes they piss people off.

@reactionextraction This comment above is wrong U2 ,started off a little bit political but sold out to the Americans in more than one way Bono always one for a photo opportunity getting his mugshot with every corrupt American president, Simple Minds first 5 albums recorded between 1979-82 are way better on all levels, U2 could only dream of doing what Simple Minds did in their early years.

I kind of liked this first time i saw the video and it does go very close to the early U2 sound of the time.Like a lot the energy, the electric guitar arrangements and the 'speedy' atmoshere,as if i'm running with my car in a long highway.I do prefer though much more their other one 'SPEED YOUR LOVE'(great video) as well as 'Alive and kicking'

It is because the producer of Waterfront and the album in wich there is Waterfront/Speed your love to me is Steve Lillywhite who also produced the first albums of U2, Boy, October and War. Steve Lillywhite "explode" the sound, i would have preferred that Simple Minds follow their New Gold Dream album with the same producer Pete Walsh because when you hear the demo of Book of Brilliant things and Speed your love to me, it sounds very different from what Steve Lillywhite has done with it with his rock footprint, it sounds like New Gold Dream 2.0. Sparkle in the rain is an epic album and very different from New Gold Dream but imho it would have been even more brilliant if it had follow the lush and dreamy sound of New Gold Dream.

You are the only person I’ve heard refer to the u2/ Simple Minds thing ,I remember it at the time but there was no rivalry between the bands it was purely fan based. In fact Jim Kerr had Bono come on stage & perform with them. I love both bands & Simple minds have just completed a tour & made a new album.
Waterfront is there anthem it always gets the crowd going crazy.

  • @dcanmore

Never really got the whole SM vs U2 thing, yes some music crossover was there in the early 80s but I think that was just a New Wave thing, hence INXS getting a fair mention. Simple Minds had three albums released before U2 made their debut and by their 8th album U2 was only on their fourth release. For me the 80s was Simple Minds and I didn't really get into U2 until Achtung Baby (1991), which blew me away and I loved their 90s sound. Saw Simple Minds in concert 1989 and U2 in 1997, both in Scotland and they were great and memorable performances.
