    • @stevenmix3723

Yes, I have heard it hundreds of times, because I used to listen to radio and watch MTV. I don't understand these kids who will hear a song once, not hate it, but will never ~play~ it again The modern generation of songs on demand has truly lost the magic of random hearing. So boring, to only listen to things on demand. I still mostly listen to radio, and switch around if it's not the right song for the mood. No smart phone, no Spotify, and my life is richer for letting what happens happen in my ears.

I used to listen to Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2 when he did a four hour show through the night. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of music - and very good taste. He played everything from rock , pop , country , folk and Americana. There was plenty I didn't like but also a ton of great stuff from across the years 1940 to the new millennium . I'm shocked at young people nowadays who've never heard anything outside a narrow time band.

Alive and Kicking is also the name of an R & B group from the late 60's-early 70's. They had a big hit called "Tighter, tighter." This is one of the few songs in rock and roll where the tambourine figures prominently and is integral to the song's sound. Andy and Alex should review this song.

For a deep dive on early Simple Minds, I recommend Pleasantly Disturbed from their 1st album, Life In A Day, This Fear Of Gods from Empire And Dance and Love Song from Sons And Fascination/Sister Feelings Call. These are all from before their album, New Gold Dream 81/82/83/84, which was, in my opinion their best album and is also much more radio friendly, but also still complex. They were much more experimental on their early albums. It’s definitely worth a deep dive to see where they came from. It’s also important to note, this band is still active and continue to put out new albums.

"Wall of sound", exactly. Born 1968 we had "wall of sound" like Emerson Lake and Palmer "Lucky Man". That was new. Sonic. For me, "wall of sound" was new back then. I have glimpses of it evolving. "Rio" from Duran Duran, etc. For me, this band blew onto the scene 1984 with "Don't forget about me". We all saw the movie. If you were a stoner or a nerd, we all blasted this tune. Then they came out with this song about a year later? The whole "wall of sound/ sonic" just seemed to come together. The second half of this song always ripped my head off, as if it was a different song, but it was clearly the same song. That part when the band goes quiet with only the keyboards playing that lonely melody, then the "wall of sound" hits you in the face. To this day, it strikes me as power. Then she starts singing over it all. Mother of God.
Yes, for many it can be a sonic overload. At the time of the release, no one had put it all together like that. At that point in time. Today, it may seem old fashioned, and that is fine. But for me, when it came out on MTv, this song hit like a fist. Many of my friends, (when we used to sit together and listen to entire album), we were all looking at each other wondering "what the hell just happened?" This song song still kills me.
