Hello from Scotland. I was lucky enough to get a ticket for the filming of this video at Glasgow Barrowlands then saw them perform this 7 times live in Dec ‘83 & Jan/Feb ‘84. Really interesting to hear your take on it. It’s fascinating. Best wishes from Glasgow, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Personal favourite of mine. 40 years of repeat listening and it still sounds fresh.

When I heard that synth-bass intro I was waiting for "California Girls" by The Beach Boys to break out

"This is our Glasgow anthem. I still think it's so original and recorded so well." - Charlie, 24th March 2015
"Feeling we needed to begin each and every show with an bang, Waterfront was designed and calculated to do just that" - Jim
"The penny dropped unconsciously, subconsciously. You start to think: wouldn’t it be good to have one song that really worked well in festivals and huge venues? Lo and behold the first song you write is Waterfront. You could say it was built for those places."

Fun fact about this song, my football team in the UK is called Sheffield Wednesday, this song has been used before every game for the past 30 years for the players to walk out to, it's a great song, the intro to it is superb. We play another song just before the teams kick off and it's another classic, Jeff Beck's Hi Ho Silver Lining, the crowd always sing along but we replace the words Silver Lining with Sheffield Wednesday, we've done this since the late 70's. We're shit at football but we know a good song when we hear one.

Another favorite of mine from the album. That bass never lets up and the percussion is outstanding. Love this album, I play it all the time still. So glad you're enjoying it!

...and lo the SImple Minds 'anthem' was born. This became a highlight of their live shows from this point onwards.

That simple but immediate bass line that kicks it off is iconic. One of their best know hits and another highlight of the album.

Stuart! I ran out of time for The Lover Speaks in this session but it will be the very first video in the next batch, hopefully with some Talk Talk too (speaking of which, I realized you shared two of their albums with me! Thanks again!).

Big single for them. Featuring Derek Forbes simple repetitive bass line and new drummer Mel Gaynor’s bombastic fills. Released as a single before the album it signaled a change that through off some long time fans and let U2 know that hey we can do stadium rock too. Of course in the end U2 won that battle

I remember that era. The Minds and U2 were sort of running parallel with each other on their way up the greasy pole. I'd say it was U2's Unforgetable Fire that propelled them ahead.

Cant remember if this was the first 12" inch pre album release that I got or Catwalk..the steve lillywhite crisper production was a noticeable change, but there are still elements of NGD that bridged the gap. East at easter, white hot day and c moon, are more favorites to come....

Get in, get out of the rain
I'm goin' to move on up to the Waterfront
Step in, step out of the rain
I'm goin' to walk on up to the Waterfront
Said, one million years from today
I'm goin' to step on up to the Waterfront
Get in, get out of the rain
Come in, come out of the rain
So far, so good, so close, yet still so far
So far, so good, so close, yet still so
So far, so far, so far
The rain, I'm going to move on up to the Waterfront
Step in, step out of the rain
I'm going to walk on up to the Waterfront
Said, one million years from today
Step on up to the Waterfront
Said, come in, come out of the rain
Said, come in, come out of the rain
Said, come in, come out of the rain
I'm goin' to move on up to the front
I'm goin' to walk on up to the front
I'm goin' to live on up by the front
I'm goin' to walk on up to the front
Come in, come out of the rain
Come in, come out of the rain
Said, come in, come out of the rain
Come in, come out of the rain

I think this was their biggest hit so far, and signalled the change in direction that followed.

For me the only good song on the entire album. The contrast between "NG" and "SITR" was too big for me back then, like the big contrast between "Violator" and "SOFAD" from DM, man. First time I heard 'I Feel You' I thought what the hell happened?? First time I heard 'Waterfront' too. It's only by listening more and more to it and by growing older that I got more acceptable to the sudden "rock-ish" sound of both SM and DM.
