    When I was a junior in hs my track coach took me to a meet in Bloomington Indiana...At Indiana university. I had my little hs jersey on and come to find out it was a Olympic qualifying meet.
    With about 15 colleges there. Everyone asked me where Neoga university was and I’d say dude it’s my hs. Lol. Cool thing was I beat about half of them jumping 6’8” and was 3” off the Olympic qualifying height. Fun times. That was 31 years ago and I still have dreams about either dunking basketballs or high jumping at least 6 times a year

    when I saw your first jump In the video, I frankly tot it looked quite pathetic, but after seeing the rest of your progress, I feel inspired by you as a high jumper and your obvious determination in the event, this video really showed me that anyone can jump. Thanks man, and good luck for ur future competitions

    this is so motivating to me. i’ve seen all these videos of people up in the high 5s and low 6s their freshman year. it really discouraged me because for more than half of the season i’ve struggled with 5 foot, but this gave me more motivation. thank you :)

    Hope you ended up jumping in college! I had a very similar story. I jumped 5'8'' my freshman year, and then finished HS with 6'5". Managed to sneak onto a D1 team as a walkon, and three years later I cleared 6'11.5". Crazy how much you can improve over time

    • @nickm8901
      @nickm8901  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Congrats on 6'11.5. That's a great mark.
      I did jump in college, it was pretty crazy how it ended up. I ended up walking on as a Freshman at UPenn, having a terrible season (mostly jumped 6'1 or lower) and deservedly got cut. I tried out again as a senior, walked on again and had a much better season. Went 2.00m (~6'7) a couple times. "Crazy how much you can improve over time" very true

    I hope things got better. My sophomore year we had 5 in our league that jumped at least 6' 2 and by our senior year we all cleared at least 6" 7. I have noticed over the years the amount of jumpers at higher heights has gotten lower.

      Lol! It's hard to know what specifically would be helpful for you. That being said, I think by far the most important part of the jump is the approach, and getting the approach correct. Most people in high school tend to undervalue the importance of having a good approach.

  • @maddieh7554

    How did you improve your form so drastically? Did it just happen naturally or was it something you had to teach yourself. Specifically your improved arch.

    • @nickm8901
      @nickm8901  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you "arch" without rotating enough (i.e. having enough angular velocity / angular momentum) then arching will do you no good.
      If you want to improve your jump, you want to improve your rotation over the bar. To improve your rotation over the bar, you need to get your approach (a) correct and (b) consistent.
      For (a), learn a lot about how to run a high jump approach properly, i.e. running a curve properly, body position at takeoff, leaning correctly away from bar, jumping straight up, etc.
      For (b) make sure to measure your approach with a tape measure the same distance from the bar each time. In hindsight, I can't believe I didn't measure my approach in high school, and it made me a significantly worse and less consistent jumper.
      Good luck.
