    The fireman looking helmet is a WW1 steel helmet design. The short cap is called a Kepi. The big vostroyan hat is called a Bearskin. If it's not poofy but tall, it's probably a Shako.

    Can't wait for the heavy weapons for these guys. I'm using Adrians on my infantry, Bearskins on my veterans and Shakos on my Officers. I might use the Kepis on my heavy weapon teams, just to make them different.

    To expand Mr Giggles comment; 'Poufy hat' = Bearskin; 'Feather hat' = shako; helmet is an Adrian (WWI & WWII, French) and 'cap' is a kepi, sort post American Civil War era. Really cool and excellent value.

      From what I understand the Kepi was of French origin (looks a little different from the American version) and that hat was worn well into ww2, and probably afterwards too, I'm not an expert on French military hats.

    • @martinlaird4738
      @martinlaird4738 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jacob Yin Yeah, French officers wore Kepis well into WW2, and the foreign legion still wear their white Kepi ceremonially. I have to say though the Adrian Helmet is absolutely awesome.

    • @johnbruce4004
      @johnbruce4004 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@martinlaird4738 That they did, although the Kepi itself evolved. French troops in 1870s wore one similar to ACW, the FFL headgear from 1920s on much like US 1950s cap. These technical details don't alter the lovely castings, which I would cheerfully purchase.

    I've spent the last day (at the time of this writing) poring over Games Workshop's prices, and comparing them to a bunch of different alternatives. Including Wargames Atlantic, but also sites like Mantic Games and Khurasan Miniatures.
    In all of these cases, the difference is night and day in terms of prices. A ten-man squad of Cadians of Catachans or Steel Legion costs ~$35 each. Whereas all the sites I mentioned provide products at least on par with GW in terms of providing soldier variety, while giving way more models for less money. Even in the cases where they were selling mono-pose models that didn't have the same customizability, they compared better in value against GW's equivalent product, the $10 squad of five Cadians. Looked way more visually interesting, too, even as far as mono-pose soldiers with rifles go.
    Another point in the favor of these other companies is they provide options GW seems reluctant to. The video already talks about how Wargaming Atlantic does Steel Legion/Kriegsman more cheaply (and arguably better; the Steel Legion, at least, were mono-pose metal, rather than customizable parts in plastic). What else do these companies provide? Well, if you miss Squats, both Wargaming Atlantic and Mantic Games have you covered with their lines of far future/space dwarves.
    Not to be outdone, Khurasan Miniatures sells a line of rat/mouse soldier models (in this case, channeling the conflict between Bolsheviks and Royalists in Revolutionary Russia). So they provide us with space Skaven, by way of Steel Legion/Kriegsman. No gas masks, but they've got the trench coats. Makes me want to run an army of intelligent, communist rats leading a red revolution in the bowels of an underhive.

    IT'S A BEARSKIN!!! That's the hat for the Vostroyans, not the feathery hat (which is called a shako).
    Sorry, rather lost control there 😕
    The peaked cap would make the historic French Foreign Legion if you add the little flap given on the head sprue too.
    As you said, lots of possibilities 👍☺

    I have to say great review. And add that I own 2 boxes of these guys thats 48 model's to build and I had enough to build a 5 man HQ 3 10 man squads and 6 heavy weapons teams I used the plasma guns as (Heavy Bolters) and it fits the purpose overall 60 bucksplus tax 48 models = instant platoon. Great deal. As he said bases are the issue but you can get 25mm bases from infinity for 5 bucks or 6 us I think you get 24 bases. Or go to Michael's and get wooden bases cheap.

    I got a box of these but haven't painted them yet. But I think they will make for great conscripts in any Imperial Guard army. Conscripts are 20-30 models in a unit, so GW would charge £58-87 for 1 unit of conscripts. Meanwhile one unit of these is just £25. So cheap easy way to fill up your army. I also think that whilst these guy will look different if part of say a Cadian army, thats kind of a good thing. They should be identifiably different to Cadians. Lets you easily tell the difference between your hoard of expendable conscripts and your hoard of slightly less expendable shock troopers. And the customisable options for heads is insane. The Brodie helmets make for good modern soldiers/regiments like Cadians and Krieg. The feather hat options for some more old fashioned troops, like the Ventrillians. The Bearskin heads would fit into a Vostroyan army perfect, the caps into Mordians. They just suit so many of the current regiments.

    "grow-niarr" is much closer pronunciation to the word in french. "Lay Grow-Niarr" (the G in "Gn" is a very soft G, like just the end part of it. D at the end is silent and we never pronunce the plural "s") Translates to : The Growlers.

    • @slyfenrys4442
      @slyfenrys4442 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Je confirme! The french "gn" is always pronounced "ni" and we have this strange tendency to never pronounce the last letters of the words. There go the D and the S, so... "Groniar"!

    Since you mentioned. they're not actually vostroyans, vostroyans are meant to wear Caucasian style "Papakha" hats which are often associated with Cossacks, since Vostroyan lore is heavily based on the Cossacks. Annoyingly lots of people use french Imperial Guard hats like the ones on the sprue which is a lil pet peeve of mine
