Thanks so much for putting all your color tests and mixes on your website, it’s such a great resource for quick reference! As someone who likes having everything painted before playing, I’m intrigued by your idea to do rapid painting first, followed by incremental refinement. Maybe I’ll give it go! Finally, some more Star Wars would be great, variety is awesome. Happy new year!
I just finished my Blizzard force.... I added baking soda and some super fine ground Sparkle Embossing Powder (fine glitter) to the snow/glue/water mix... it gives you a little glimmer off the snow when it catches the light.
I didn't start painting minis until I got into Legion. The thought of painting a mini made me anxious; I didn't want to muck it up. That said, I really wanted to have a fully painted army before I played a game. It took me about six months to get to a skill level where I felt comfortable putting my minis on the table to play with. I wanted to be proud of my work. Two years on, and I'm still really enjoying it. Painting minis is not only cathartic, but instils a real sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when you see those finished painted minis on the table fighting for objectives, etc. Legion's a great game.
Hey wow! I just finished painting the Echo Base Defenders, too! My secret was washing all the models with Citdadel's new Soulblight Grey shade. Then I contrasted up from there.
Great looking Rebel Hoth Battle force you have there 👍 I was lucky enough to stop by my FLGS a couple months ago to find one of the game tables with an old 80’s-90’’s AT-AT stomping around. I enquired about it to the owner and he said that a customer gave it to him and he would be willing to sell it to me for a reasonable price ($150) and he would even let me pay over the course of a couple months!!! So I am now the proud owner of an over 20” tall AT-AT that will be perfect for games of Star Wars Legion. Now I just need to dig into my storage and find all of my miniatures to get them roughly tabletop ready, although nowhere near to the amazing job that you’ve done with your collection 🤙
I really like the idea of starting play with "minimal" paint jobs then adding highlights between plays. I am working on an Empire army right now and this may help me get it to the table a bit sooner. Thanks for the inspiration!
Love how you built unit redundancy into your army, and your painting and basing tutorials are invaluable to those like me new to the hobby. Thanks for all the great videos and happy new year!
Great way to start the new year! I am a big fan of your channel and was starting to be interested in Star War Legion, and bam, you release a superb video about it. Thanks so much and happy and peaceful year 2023!
I must confess, when I started Infinity I just played with the plain pewter but did paint on firing arcs at least. The army I just collect for fun has been painted and the army I actually use is still waiting to be primed and painted
Coincidentally, I just got through this movie in my grand rewatch of the whole series (at least the series minus the animated shows...I'd be at this for weeks if not months if those were included). These look fantastic! And that squarespace page looks pretty slick. That speedpaint also looks to be pretty effective, especially on models like C3PO. It's like a wash and base paint all in one. If I ever want to paint large numbers of minis at a time, I'll definitely look into that stuff.
Wow! Everything came out looking fantastic. I especially loved when you were working on Chewie. That blend of browns looks so good on him and you make it look so easy. Great job and very inspiring, Dana!
I did a similar thing with my 8th edition Iron Warriors force. I put hazard stripes on a few key models after every game, buy a few months later the whole army had hazard stripes in varying degrees in different ways because I'd had time between batches to think of new places and ways to paint them on the Mk III armour etc without having the stress of doing it all straight away. It also meant that the models that saw the most games began to get other flourishes too as a reward for their service! Sounds dorky but it added to the narrative. :P
I had to watch this twice , l couldn't get over your eyes the first time. Geta work , first time seeing your channel , liked and subbed. Thanks for the 3D links.
Great video. I've had a hobby slump recently but this has encouraged me to paint my own Rebel forces that are staring at me in there grey majesty from a shelf nearby. Your talent continues to impress, such good looking results with such ease. Thanks Dana 💜
Thanks for the video Dana! Painted up my clones from legion as well, and totally get your idea of getting it ready for play! Hope you have fun, and awesome video! ❤
Great to see you doing more legion. I take a similar approach - get a mini sketched in, based and looking tabletop worthy very quickly. Then I return over time and add more details. (I usually complete heroes in one or two sittings) Means very little gets 100% done, but I also have very little that's 0% done either.
Your army looks awesome. When you do the highlights add a little dull metallic to R2's dome (very faint drybrush) and similarly to 3P0's head, shoulders (brass) and hint of metal to the right leg. Very faint. I think that would bring the two up nice. For Luke's lazorsword... Maybe a hinto of silver at the hilt and just glaze it lighter upwards?
A REALLY great project. All these figures are well painted & detailed. P.s. for a better fix for the heads perhaps you should pin them with a metal bit👍 and baking soda plus PVA glue and white paint it's a great (& economical) alternative for snow.
Great video! The Speedpaint Mega Set has made me really enjoy painting again! Currently doing a Battle for Macragge and Assault on Black Reach eBay rescue with them!
Thanks for sharing this great looking project! I especially appreciate that you shared how you mixed your paints to get the colors right. That's something I'm quite new at doing. Today is New Year's Eve, so I wish you a very happy and fruitful 2023!
These came out fantastic and the snow bases in particular look great. My stormtroopers have been sitting unpainted for years now... but that may be more because of my bitterness at the lack of sequel trilogy stuff in the game still.
I've been perplexed to start painting my own Hoth themed force, I did similar things minus swapping heads, and I got a special edition pilot suit luke from a lucky find! I will take this video in mind. Probably not as much mixing of paints as you did because I do not understand mixing at all. I never mix enough or mix too much. Basing seems straightforward enough. Hopefully I can mimic this!
Awesome video! Been super keen to see how these turned out & the process from all the photos you've put up. Have a happy new year, and I hope 2023 is full of hobby joy for you 💜
Great fun to watch you put this together. Looks fantastic! I am a-okay playing a game with unpainted minis but even just a basic scheme adds so much to the feel of the game. I am with you in trying to just get basic colors done to get them tabletop ready and then go back whenever to add more. Great idea!!
When I start an army I start painting to my finished standard and will accept games when I can. Once I have my core, if I add a unit I will usually wait until it is fully painted. I usually wait to buy a new unit for a game as a reward for playing it since I am a painter more than a gamer. I also don't buy models until I'm ready to start them more-or-less immediately, so except for a big starter box I only have at most one unit being painted.
So good Dana! Keep it simple, but not skimping! Really love your approach with color blending the speed paints - Chewy was amazing!!! Get them to the table, ASAP...besides in the "downtime" 🤣 you can always revisit a model or two, after playing, and see where a little extra might go a long way. Love it, love this game...I want to go grab some of those alien heads!
I really enjoy your videos and now that I have the AP Speedpaints, it is great to get ideas from your colour combinations and experiments. Thanks, and Happy New Year Dana and to everyone at Howl Corp :P
great stuff. Squamous Miniatures has some great Hoth models/terrain. Also Warbear Studios. Both can be found on gumroad if you want some alternate sculpts for your game. edit- also, I gotta say that when I saw this video I was, like, HoLY SH*T, Dana likes Legion!!! Booyah!!!
Looks nice! I'll have to try some of that snow technique for some Winter Guard characters for Marvel Crisis Protocol. Now I'm hoping you start doing videos for Shatterpoint!
Really cool video. I'm currently doing my own Hoth project, where I'm building up two complete armies using the battleforce boxes and some extra units, this was very helpful especially for help with basing which I've got a method for but it's not a very pleasing one. Partly because GW's snow effect paint isn't that good compared to others. Definitely learned a few tips to put into my own project, especially when it comes to the 3x3 board I'm also building. Happy New Year!
I think the inconsistency of Rebel uniforms is good because in real life, the uniforms would age or wear differently and if purchased from different sources would show a degree of variation. A real world example of this is the United State's OD #3 in WWII, which fades as it ages and even different contractors had different slight variations in color.
Awesome! I'm helping my friend start his army of Valhallans for 40k and this will definitely help. Also wow I like the Rebel's Hoth uniforms way more than their Endor ones. I want to try Legion, I think its weird that all the Armies I want to play are primarily white, Hoth Rebels, Stormtroopers, Clone Troopers XD
Dana! My partner gets a kick out of your vids but she’s a huuuuge Star Wars fan. Can’t wait to show her this! When are you gonna do some Mordheim content!? You have all that 6th Edition stuff and Eric is back in Canada!
Really cool video! Since I plan on painting a few Hoth Rebels myself I find your color guide really helpful. I just have to somehow translate the Army Painter paints to Citadel and Vallejo, as AP is really hard to get. 😉
great video! I'm in the process of also doing a hoth-battle-theme rebel- and imperial army; your working on the "rebel paints" will help a lot, so thx for that :) but: you know.. you'll have to do a video on the heroes of hoth now, too. those who liberate that moon, as well as bringing peace and order to ALL of the galaxy -Darth Vader and Crew ;)
I know the true cheat code to painting white. Over black primer basecoat kantor blue and with an airbrush spray some daler rowney fw titanium white ink from above. Do a second coat up close to where you want your highest highlights. Then panel line/recess shade paynes grey oil wash. (Blue black). It's really close to the cold shadows that form on white and bright days and it's super easy.
More Star Wars content would be great. Thanks for sharing your army build and tips.
looks awesome! good call on swapping out some of those dang Sullustans
Thanks so much for putting all your color tests and mixes on your website, it’s such a great resource for quick reference! As someone who likes having everything painted before playing, I’m intrigued by your idea to do rapid painting first, followed by incremental refinement. Maybe I’ll give it go! Really like your use of different speed paints while its still wet to give different shades
Now that is a very impressive looking Rebel army..
These look fantastic, I love the snow basing!
This is what got me into minis! Love seeing Legion minis and their projects!
"Piles of interest" is what I'm calling everything in my studio from now on. This was awesome!
Love the Legion representation! It's been my favorite game for the last 2 years!
I just finished my Blizzard force.... I added baking soda and some super fine ground Sparkle Embossing Powder (fine glitter) to the snow/glue/water mix... it gives you a little glimmer off the snow when it catches the light.
really enjoy seeing you paint another game. would love to see more star wars, battletech, or anything else that catches your eye.
Awesome video! Happy to see more Star Wars Legion content🎉
I didn't start painting minis until I got into Legion. The thought of painting a mini made me anxious; I didn't want to muck it up. Awesome minis. Please more more Star Wars. Keep up the good work.
Really enjoyed this video. The extra 10 hours to detail after gameplay is a great suggestion, and I am loving seeing videos that use Speedpaints.
More Star Wars content. I love the idea of rewarding yourself with more painting time after each game.
Awesome battleforce! We'll watch all the Legion content you want to make!
Hey wow! I just finished painting the Echo Base Defenders, too! My secret was washing all the models with Citdadel's new Soulblight Grey shade. Then I contrasted up from there.
Love the star wars legion content! Keep making videos about what you're into! Warhammer is not the only cool wargame!
Please do more SW Legion content! Absolutely love it
More of this please, the Starwars legion models are great to put together and paint, much love!!
Great looking Rebel Hoth Battle force you have there 👍

Is this a real thing or did you get hacked?
I love the snow basing, and the army looks great!
0:49 poor R2-D2
I really like the idea of starting play with "minimal" paint jobs then adding highlights between plays. I am working on an Empire army right now and this may help me get it to the table a bit sooner. Thanks for the inspiration!
Your Chewbacca fur is astounding!
Love how you built unit redundancy into your army, and your painting and basing tutorials are invaluable to those like me new to the hobby. Thanks for all the great videos and happy new year!
I love that you showcased the 3d printed models. I was looking at the same models for the exact same reasons :)
Great way to start the new year! I am a big fan of your channel and was starting to be interested in Star War Legion, and bam, you release a superb video about it. Thanks so much and happy and peaceful year 2023!
Love the Star Wars legion content and more would be appreciated.Happy New Year.
Your videos are so informative and inspiring, i really want to paint up my rebel army and this is just what i needed.
Hope you have a fantastic end of 2022 Dana, I've got to get into star wars legion next year the models look amazing 😅
Thank you Annie!!!! Happy New Year and looking forward to working together more in 2023!!!
Legion looks like a lot of fun!
These look amazing, honestly you have smashed it with this, your website is super helpful too, I think putting the paint mixes on it is great
Really missed these kinds of army/squad painting videos from you Dana. Awesome stuff!
Bases are great. Hopefully you do more Legion miniatures
I must confess, when I started Infinity I just played with the plain pewter but did paint on firing arcs at least. The army I just collect for fun has been painted and the army I actually use is still waiting to be primed and painted

Yeah! Star Wars Legion Content Rocks!
That is awesome, Dana! Good tip about snow bases too.
I watch your comment *despite* being mostly GW content so you can imagine my excitement to see you do some Star Wars.

Doing all the bases with that special mix was likely very annoying… but so paid off! Looked so good for an area that gets often overlooked 😊

These are amazing!!
Thanks for the video Dana! Painted up my clones from legion as well, and totally get your idea of getting it ready for play! Hope you have fun, and awesome video! ❤
I've been dying for this video, amazing stuff!
Fantastic video! I am a bit odd, and I just like to paint up armies that I never really intend to play with just because I like them.
Well done, wonderful approach. I loved this one and would greatly appreciate more star wars legion content

Thanks Dana, as always you are my inspiration Muse. Time to attack my pile of grey!
Thanks for sharing this great looking project! I especially appreciate that you shared how you mixed your paints to get the colors right. That's something I'm quite new at doing. Today is New Year's Eve, so I wish you a very happy and fruitful 2023!
Looking good. I’m trying to get into a similar mindset for my figures.
I like the Han you did! Way easier than cutting up Endor Han and putting him on a Andor body like I did!
These came out fantastic and the snow bases in particular look great.
My stormtroopers have been sitting unpainted for years now... but that may be more because of my bitterness at the lack of sequel trilogy stuff in the game still.
they look awesome

Awesome work! I'm gonna try to ride this inspiration wave to finish the CIS bot friends I built up and...primed??...2 years ago
Nice work!!!
Thanks Crabbok!!!
Doing Artoo dirty... Love the vid!
I really enjoy your videos and now that I have the AP Speedpaints, it is great to get ideas from your colour combinations and experiments. Thanks, and Happy New Year Dana and to everyone at Howl Corp :P
Just a side note: add a bit of white acrylic color to the snow mixture. It helps to avoid it turns yellow.
great stuff.
Booyah!!!
Really loved the video! Great looking army that didn’t take a year to paint
Very cool Dana. I piece meal my armies as I have limited time to paint.
Happy new year
They look great!!! I’d love to have some members of my army painted by you
Neat idea to bolster the force with good ol' Wedge.
Awesome video! Thank you for making it and please keep the non-WH content coming!
Yesss finally! Only 6 months later from the twitter teases!
Looks nice! I'll have to try some of that snow technique for some Winter Guard characters for Marvel Crisis Protocol. Now I'm hoping you start doing videos for Shatterpoint!
Damn those light sabres look great

I'm trying to stick with getting an army to a "battle ready" as well, then like you mentioned I can go back and take them to a higher standard.
Amazing job.

When are you gonna do some Mordheim content!? You have all that 6th Edition stuff and Eric is back in Canada!
My bad, I also love the channel!
I like the effect of tinting the snow bases with blue - have you hidden any "yellow snow" versions in there (lol)?
Really cool video! Since I plan on painting a few Hoth Rebels myself I find your color guide really helpful. I just have to somehow translate the Army Painter paints to Citadel and Vallejo, as AP is really hard to get. 😉
Nice paintjob
