Honestly I always find universal super interesting due to how much it changes. While Disney in the many many years that it’s had it’s parks has only gotten rid of a handful of rides, Universal changes drastically every 15 years or so. Exited to see how it will look like.

You're kidding, right? In the last five years, DHS saw the opening of Toy Story Land (multiple attractions), Galaxy's Edge (multiple attractions) and 'Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway'. Magic Kingdom got TRON and will get a reimagining of Splash Mountain (2024). EPCOT picks up attractions based on 'Ratatouille' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and is about to open the re-imagined Future World. I get that some people love universal, but going after the Disney Imagineers like this is decidedly weak sauce.

Also Snow White’s Scary Journey, Tinkerbell’s Fairy area and a Donald Duck playground were all removed to make way for New Fantasyland which featured 3 new attractions, arguably the best themed restaurant in any theme park and also replaced the Mickey Toontown with Storybook Circus. Galaxy’s Edge & Toy Story Land replaced the Streets of America, the Backlot Tour, Lights Motor Action and the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground with massive expansion of new properties. Avatar: The Land of Pandora replaced Camp Mickey Minnie.
Epcot is constantly replacing old rides with new ones, recent examples include Frozen Ever After replacing Maelstrom and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind replacing Ellen’s Energy Adventure

Universal is one of those parks that needs to change and update over time. Their motto was "ride the movies". However, movies over time become lost to new generations. While movies like jaws and back to the future are classics, they don't have the wider appeal to younger audiences the way harry potter does.

As an avid theme park attendee I can agree with this. Having recently visited Universal Orlando the one thing I kept thinking was "Disney is in trouble if they don't clean up their act and start adding, or at least dropping prices". My week long trip staying at Cabana Bay with a beautiful upgraded Volcano bay view and theme park tickets cost HALF as much as a comparable Disney trip. Being I live in Los Angeles I just wish Universal Hollywood would also do some MASSIVE expansions. No, Nintendo world was not a massive expansion, it's tiny. The whole park can be done in around 3-4hrs if you have the Express Pass. Once done the park just isn't as enjoyable to waste time in compared to the Disney parks.

    • @ashleighelizabeth5916
      @ashleighelizabeth5916 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

I think they are struggling with available land limitations in Hollywood. Disney can be much more comparably priced if you stay at one of the partner resorts instead of at a Disney Resort proper. You get many of the same perks from doing so but for as much as half off the cost of your hotel stay. The actual park tickets are pretty comparable between the two resorts it's the hotel cost that's what's so damn expensive at Disney.

@@yotsubafanfan as I said previously, stay at a partner property instead of at a Disney property. The partner properties are cheaper, better and have pretty much all of the same perks as a Disney property. You get connection to the Disney transportation network, the park only opens a half hour early for Disney properties which is negligible and some of the Disney properties have longer bus rides than some of the partner properties. And if you desperately want a magic band you can buy them separately even if you are staying at a partner property. The park admission tickets are quite comparable it's staying park properties where you are getting gouged like crazy and there is no real reason to do so anymore...

The issues in Hollywood are not JUST that it is, in fact, a working studio and uses most of the land for that but also NOISE issues. Believe it or not the studio has monitoring stations all over to keep track because of potential city regulation and lawsuits from the folks living up on the hill above the studio. Indeed, there are other limits/problems. Once upon a time, people living up there started experiencing odd radio frequency issues--everything from interference in radios and TV's to having their garage doors open on their own etc. etc. The FCC was called in and found that between movie crew walkie-talkies and the myriad of communications radios for the tram tour, the rides, security, etc. etc. they were using something like 150 different frequencies and causing issues. SO....between that and the general decay of California and rising crime and cost of living issues (not to mention current strikes) to expect a lot more expansion at U-Hollywood is sadly unrealistic, and a good example is the new coaster that is going to go up and down the hill around the upper/lower lot escalators--it should be great, but again, noise issues have to be addressed and that will cost big bucks.

The backstage areas behind Diagon Alley there are the wardrobe services (where TMs get their uniforms), locker rooms, and a couple of TM dining locations, the back of the HR building and I believe payroll, the textile and painting services is also there, fuel pumps for the golf carts and shuttle busses, and one of the man administrative buildings and security (which can be moved to Epic, I suppose) as well as one of the stops for the shuttle that shuttles TMs to their venues and back of house areas (break rooms and such) for Rockit, Fast and Furious, Gringotts, and the train and all those restaurants and merch locations... also a Starbucks lol. I highly doubt they are going to use that to expand anything. The track for the Hogwarts express also runs along that road connecting USF to IOA
Also a few months ago they announced they were renovating that whole area for a more modern and updated back of house area for TMs. So there is already construction happening there

As someone who works there, i will say that the majority of where you outlined for backlot will not be expanded into; especially the orange. But they are expanding whats currently in the orange, because you are right on things being moved to epic. One thing, the warehouse, was moved last year. and now they are creating, what team members are calling, universal campus for team members where it stood; expanding the TM dining place that was next to it and moving the daves school from one of the sound stages to the campus.
We dont get told much about other stuff, heck we weren't even told about universal campus until everyone's walking routes to IOA had to be rerouted, so maybe some of the things in red will happen. there is construction going on in Toon Lagoon last i saw, in front of ripsaw falls.

I've been saying for years now that Universal should try and aquire the DC licensing (which shouldn't be too hard considering their alresdy existing agreement with Warner Brothers and Harry Potter) and be given access to overhaul Marvel Superhero Island and transformed into Gotham City, even if they just reskinned the existing attractions and maybe took over a small portion of Toon Lagoon in the process to use the theater as a Batman stuntshow (better than the one Six Flags did in the 90s). I also would expect them to somehow extend the Hogwarts Express into the new Fantastic Beasts land and if they don't then thats an obvious upgrade wasted.

MIB is not going anywhere. They have been slowly refurbishing the animatronics. Would they do that if it was getting ready to go? I do think the ride system needs an overhaul as it is unreliable and the guns don't work well. The ride I think goes first: Hollywood Rip Ride RockIt. Universal has a track record of not keeping outdoor coasters longer than 16-17 years (see Original Hulk and Dueling Dragons). Guess when it hits 16 years: 2025. I also don't think it will be a retrack like hulk. I think it will be a completely new ride, but keep the music theme. After that, I am thinking Simpsons then F&F get replaced but I think the RRR replacement will open in early 2026, Lost Continent retheme in late 26, Secret Life of Pets (maybe replacing Blue Man Group) in early-mid 27, Simpsons closes at the end of 27 (maybe replaced by Pokemon?).

Sinbad closed in Sept 2018. I appreciate you mentioning that you don't know what the function of all the buildings are and not just assuming things. Most of the orange buildings will stay. You forgot to highlight the two buildings west of the orange area, which are Universal Creative, which is moving to the new campus. Though, I don't think Universal wholly owns those buildings. The area behind MiB/Simpsons has always been mostly temp structures because it is considered an expansion pad for USF, but some of those buildings are important, like being parade float storage. HHN hasn't used the concrete pad to the west of MiB in a few years, so it would be easy to add that location back in as a house. The soundstages are still used and are technically part of Universal Production Group, not Universal Parks & Resorts, so there will have to be some more hurdles to get those incorporated into the park. With Universal's new studio campus announced for Atlanta, it's entirely possible that more of these soundstages will sit vacant once the Atlanta campus opens up. The Hogwarts Express is a cable pulled Doppelmayr-built transit system and thus is already silent. All of the sounds and fog effects, including the large wheels, are all fake and only turned on when in the stations in view of guests. Lastly, I want to mention Marvel. Though the contract is infinite, I do think Disney will try to play their hand with Marvel while negotiating Simpsons in 2027. In terms of Disney, they did confirm that a new land at the scale of Pandora and SW:GE will be coming behind Frontierland and is in the planning phase at time of writing.

Thinking long long term, universal have land for a 4th park next to epic universe. 4 parks seems overkill but maybe use a small amount of that land for extra park solely for horror nights in the normal seasonal period plus a couple of evenings a week the rest of the year. Just have 5/6 horror thrill rides and the houses. That then means studios doesn't to worry about space for HHN houses, so have more freedom.

One other thing you missed that would be much further off is that there's space for a 4th park to the east of the parking lot for Epic if they convert the parking lot into garages, just like when they did the same to add Islands.

  • @127kendal

I would imagine there's a lot going on in those buildings in the back area.... you have warehouses that store things like product/merchandise for the parks. Stages that serve multiple purposes like for doing actual filming, storage and HHN houses. Buildings that do maintenance on broken attraction pieces and sets. Buildings for cast members and more higher up employee offices. And walkways for cast members to walk backstage from their wardrobe building to their part of the land. Universal doesn't want cast members walking through the parks walking in the wrong theme bc it would break the immersion for the guests. That's why Magic Kingdom for Disney is ahead of the game based on the underground set up they have. Changing their entire backstage layout wouldn't make much sense especially with so many plans on the table.

I think Lost Continent should be replaced with Amity Island. It fits the Island theme of IoA and you can bring back Jaws in a new technological ride with a mix of animatronics and screens (think the end with the fires being on a screen while the shark attacks the boat.) Simpsons should revert back to Back to the Future with a new movie and maybe a random generator for time jumps (think Star Tours) where no ride is the same. I say they could also turn the animal stunt show into a Pokemon tournament where animatronic Pokemon battle and you could have kids volunteer to be the trainers of the Pokemon and battle in front of the audience. You could even have different Pokemon do different things (imagine a kid trying to command a Charizard and doesn’t listen to them at first for some comical reactions). The final battle would be against a Mewtoo and the challenging Pokemon would destroy half the stage to beat the Mewtoo for the championship (think electrical light show for Pikachu, Fire for Charizard, Water for Squirttle and so on).

While I see your point in the end about Universal really pushing full steam ahead whilst Disney can't seem to get their act together. Their are a couple of advantages that Disney has always had over Universal that will make the battle still difficult for Universal to win at. The biggest advantage is the generational one. It is sort of a right of passage for families to go to Disney parks together and then as their kids grow up they want to bring their own kids back to Disney. The second advantage is the space. While you're inside the perimeter of Walt Disney World, even just driving around the property, you still feel like you're within their world whereas Universal Orlando(like Disneyland in California) doesn't have the huge property that Disney has(which is a shame that Disney doesn't seem to take more advantage themselves of utilizing their space). Finally, the majority of Disney's rides and attractions are accommodating to every person. Even the attractions with height restrictions are still accommodating to people with larger body types. The only two attractions that people have reported having difficulties with are Avatar: Flight of Passage and Tron Lightcycle/Run. Universal on the other hand has numerous attractions that not only have a height restriction, but also have seating that is too restrictive for people of certain body types and while I understand Universal keeping safety a top priority, I am dumbfounded at the fact that the attractions themselves were greenlit and built without considering the thought of a great number of people that would be alienated from experiencing those attractions(Particularly the attractions within the Wizarding World of Harry Potter given the popularity of that brand). I would hope that with the arrival of Epic Universe, Universal would have the opportunity to course correct this issue with the new theme park, but from what I have seen so far being built, it looks like they still haven't learned their lesson and unfortunately I believe that is what will keep Universal at a disadvantage to Disney.

The generational dynamic is real but I feel is losing out to Father Time (like all things do). A child born in 2010, for example, may be the last generation to have parents that were taken to Disney as a right of passage. You see story after story of grandparents selling their DVCs. Also, when that child turns 35 in the year 2045, with their own 5 yr old, there is no guarantee that the Disney rides from the 50's and 70's will have enough appeal to pull a digitally native demographic back in time. I am not saying Disney is going away, I am just saying father time is undefeated. Heck, folks will be on Mars by then...

@@LChatmanFL That still gives Disney a good 15-20 years before Universal could look to becoming the top theme park draw once the generational appeal has dissipated. Universal still will have the problem having hardly any attractions that entire families(including very young kids as well as guests with larger body types) can enjoy together. Disney World has a total of 51 rides between the 4 theme parks and 30 of them do not have a height requirement and I believe only 1 - 2 rides are not accommodating to guests with larger body types whereas Universal Orlando has 32 rides between the 2 parks and only 5 of them have no height requirement and also about 10 of those rides are very restrictive with their seating that prevent larger guests(Tron and Avatar) from being able to enjoy them. Finally take a look at the overall themes of the parks and their included attractions. What's the common theme within Universal Orlando? "Ride the Movies/Live the Adventure". Most of the attractions at Universal's parks deal with either dealing with a conflict(Escaping a disaster or monster or defeating a villain). A lot of Disney World's attractions are about discovery, magic, whimsey and wonder without the need for a conflict(examples include: Spaceship Earth, Space Mountain, Avatar: Flight of Passage, Toy Story Mania, etc.). I just think Disney's parks have broader appeal than Universal will ever have.

@@justink3703 You're not wrong. However Universal is broadening it's appeal by a great deal. Epic Universe is a prime we example. Several of the IPs are rumored to have rides for families of all shapes and sizes. Also, they are building stand alone kid parks like the one announced for Frisco, TX.
Your points about whimsy and wonder are accurate, however, part of my point is Disney's whimsical DNA is fighting Father Time. I think there will always be a place for those little kinds of attractions, but when is the last time you went to a highschool basketball game. Those kids don't do whimsy. They want Instagram level excitement. Even Disney is trending in that direction.
Disney had a 70 yr head start. The next 10yrs will be revealing.

@@LChatmanFL You maybe right that the next generation may be done with the wonderment of Disney, only time will tell. I do feel Epic Universe will be a wake up call to the Disney company on just what its competition is capable of and that they are not as invincible as they may have thought, but once Disney does realize this, I think they will then do what is necessary to stay the top dog in the theme park industry.

@@justink3703 Disney absolutely has the ability to stay top dog. They need to get past their financial concerns and just make good decisions.

I'd take out MIB and then restore legacy rides. Make that a classics area of the park with The Return of Jaws and converting Simpsons back to Back to the Future. So with ET nearby it would make sense as a retro rides land.

Universal need to go more with there Roller Coasters. Busch Gardens and Seaworld Kills them with the number of coasters. And i love the current line up of coasters Universal offers. I just believe they need to do alittle more to take the title.
