      Personally, I got the impression that she was one of those straight chicks who *says* she's bi- just so she can claim to be LGBT. It sounded like she only expressed interest in male characters, and she rejected the female NPC they made *just* for her to romance.

    Funny thing about the last story and your mention of set sexualities in DnD; The Dragon Age games do go the route of having set sexualities for some companions as well (Alastair/Morrigan in DA1 being exclusively hetero and Dorian/Sera in Inquisition being exclusively gay/lesbian) so the problem player couldn't even use the game excuse to try and turn that one NPC who was gay.

      @CrispysTavern The games do go way back, so it makes sense to forget some details. I played Origins when it was new, back when I was 20, so I'm legit surprised I can even remember some of the companion names lol
      Heck, you could even use Bg3 as a more recent example. Even though the companions can be romanced by any gender, their dialogue still makes mention of preferences: Astarion and Lae'zel leaning more towards men and Gale, Halsin, Minthara, and Wyll more towards women, with Wyll having more of a preference for Githyanki.

    As a writer, I've always said that readers DO NOT get to have input on how the story progresses. That includes characters and their sexuality. They can say that they didn't like something and say how it could have been done better, but criticism can be a good thing.
    To outright come in and say "No! The Author is wrong and this character is actually THIS sexuality!" has been my biggest peeve.
    It's never come in Tabletop thankfully.

    Nat 1s/Nat 20s are only auto fails/successes in combat, on things like attack rolls or saves, etc.

    I've had that "co-GM" twice in my games. The first time was my first game I'd ever run with way too many people even though it ended up being a riot. My group's forever GM agreed to run one of my NPCs for me and help guide me if I started to falter. The most he had to course correct me on was making sure the quieter players still got input over our louder friends. It worked out great and the NPC still exists in my campaign, though I run them myself.
    The second was when I was teaching my kid to run a game a few years later. They wanted to play and learn how to GM. I let them have input on the storylines the players would be following and they got to run a different NPC that was near impossible to kill. They actually spent a lot of their time guiding the players when they went off on weird tangents. To this day, my kid loves GMing their own games and plays regularly with their own friend group but is always welcome in my own.

    Lol my only explanation for Gortash love is that I have terrible taste in men. Funny lighthearted horror story relating to him, tho! I work very hard to never include DMPCs in my campaigns because I don't feel that they work out. But in my BG3 sequel campaign the player characters were hired by Wyll Ravengard's daughter to help her with a magical girl inspired quest. Gortash's daughter is an NPC who didn't know who her father was and is just a cute awkward tiefling artificer with garbage stats who applied to the same adventuring job to impress Wyll's daughter who she has a crush on(they're awkward teens, so par for the course), and the player characters like...basically adopted her. They will not let her out of their sight. If she doesn't appear in a place they've gone and I don't straight up tell them 'oh, she went to find out more about her father and who he was,' or 'oh, she's very tired from the last combat. She's having a nap at the inn', they'll ask "where's Teela????" To the point of becoming distracted from the main plot. I legit never intended this. Then they accidentally resurrect Gortash in a ritual gone wrong they disrupted, and now they've adopted him to to try and 'force him to reform and be a dad'. I don't have the heart to stop them. I love the shenanigans they pull with this.

    • @Floweramon
      @Floweramon 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I don't know why (maybe just because of the concept of "resurrecting Gortash and having a redemption") but that reminds me of my headcanon for one of the things that happen to my Tav after the game. Basically she is the foster sister of Durge (sole survivor of that family massacre) and at one point attempts to go to the afterlife with Jergal, sever Durge's connection with Bhaal, and bring her back.
      At Durge's insistence she does the same for Orin and Gortash, and due to the nature of the resurrection ritual used they are brought back as children at a formative stage (Durge after the family slaughter, Orin after killing her mother, Gortash after having been sold to Raphael). And until they grow older and gain enough stable and healing life experience that regaining the memories of their former lives won't cause them to fully regress into the evil monsters they were before, she basically has to raise them.

    If you have a player that's new to TTRPG, I think that a vital part of Session 0, or whatever point they get onboard, is to make absolutely clear that 'this is not a Bethesda/BioSoft game' (unless you're actually running your game like that). Players and NPCs are not automatically going to just go along with whatever your desires are. Even if you're highly persuasive, that doesn't mean they're going to automatically cave to you.'
    Also, side note...Crispy, have you ever checked out Blue Rose? Fantasy TTRPG from Green Ronin using their Fantasy AGE system (same as the Dragon Age TTRPG). Great narrative fantasy game where the setting is inclusive AF. All expressions of love and gender are accepted and valid, with an emphasis on 'dungeon diving to help/save the kingdom', rather than 'dungeon diving for XP and loot'. Plus, the ability to play intelligent animals ala Narnia. Great game!

    My personal story was like 2 years ago by this point. The dm and other players made me out to be the problem too. All i did was asking questions, trying to find compromises and simply trying to be heard amidst the chaos when nobody would listen to me. Their last straw was when i announced i had to take a break due to spiralling, and deleted that announcement when nobody gave me any type of comfort. They basically quietly bid me goodbye and kicked me out when i called them out on that. Dm blocked me, group friend blocked me, group clown blocked me...i didn't even get the time to process it all before i was thrown out on the street like a sack of rotten potatoes. Haven't been in a proper campaign since.

    About the whole Gortash-Debate... I don't find him ugly, but not really attractive either. Don't think anybody has mentioned it, but in the last story, the DM mentions that problem player, despite declaring their character as Bi at the start of the game, nearly exclusively targeted very masculine male love interests. Seems weird that after actively noting that, DM decided to make the hand crafted "perfect" love interest as a "futch lesbian". While the problem player was clearly a problem, do have to wonder if the DM isn't perhaps quite as innocent as they portray themselves here. Perhaps DM was perhaps just little bit more sick of problem player by that point than let on, and maybe let just a tad of malicious compliance slip in lol

    • @ArcCaravan

      I forgot the problem player actually claimed her character was bi, so I assume female love interest NPC was based on that detail to add variety. Seemed like an innocent mistake on OP's part that could have been avoided by problem player not falsely advertising her character as bisexual.

    You know, I actually had nicknames for the chosen of the Absolute;
    Ketheric Thorm was known as “Elf version of my fiancée’s dad” *solely* based on his appearance, not his personality (may he R.I.P.) Thorm was, in my opinion, the best and most intriguing member of the Absolute.
    Orin the Red was known as “Ms. Coo Coo for Cocoa Puffs” for obvious reasons. She fell perfectly in the middle of the three. She wasn’t as cool as Ketheric, but she was fun in her own way, and had a memorable design and vocal performance that stopped her from becoming my least favorite. Also I had a laugh when I was able to tell her that she was an incest baby. My reaction to her (after laughing) was “What are you, a child!?”.
    And finally Envor Gortash was known as “Weird Little Raccoon Man”. Honestly, if it wasn’t for his connections with Karlach, I wouldn’t even really remember this character nor take him seriously. In fact, his battle was… well, I was going to say easy, but nonexistent would be better, since I had an invisible Astarion place the Runepowder Bomb and a bunch of explosive barrels around the man. Then I had Karlach launch a fire arrow at the bombs and watched the sparks fly, one shotting Gortash. This plan was known as Operation “You get what you Fucking Deserve” (another name I had in mind was Operation “Smile you S.O.B.” But I went with the former). And I’m with the group of people who don’t understand why people find Gortash attractive. GRANTED, I’m a straight man so I would feel any attraction to him anyway, but even if I was gay, there are plenty of other hunks in the game (I mean my gosh, have you SEEN Halsin?) that have better character than he does. And that opinion makes things all the more crazy when it shows that he was the one who came up with this whole plan (along side the Dark Urge I guess? I played as a regular Tav in my first playthrough but Durge’s stuff is still there all over the place, including his dead body in Orin’s room). It’s insane. Gortash feels like the advisor lackey. Ketheric is the one who felt like the endgame big bad.
    Also, he gay bro 😂

    Problem Player in the third story is what we call an RPG Terrorist. They don't care about doing anything unless they're the spotlight, and if they're not, they will grind the game to a halt and make a game about getting them to come along. They don't care about the story, the plot, or the other players unless they are the one taking all the action, glory, and spotlight.

  • @coroixiwa

    That second one reminds me of one incident with a DM. The group needed a replacement player after one dropped out due to work so my fiance (Genderfluid) said they knew someone who had characters they had ready to go (Me, and I always have loads of characters to use). My fiance made it VERY clear that they were talking about their fiance who is also Genderfluid (They also mentioned my PTSD for reason I won't go into, but my fiance told them no flirting or sexual stuff; my fiance only made that bit clear because they have fun with playful character flirting for the laughs with NPCs and sometimes each other as long as you are ok with it). I get through a session zero with the DM to ease me into where the campaign will pick up with me so I'm not dropped in blind and so on, it went fine. The problem came in session six, my fiance was out on that session due to a migraine and was sleeping, when the DM kept pressuring my character with NPCs that were outright touching my character, and at first I, in character, brush them off trying to come off as annoyed (Was playing a Bard/Ranger who had a pretty cynical personality but would get lost in conversation with other players after the first session when they kinda bonded over an attack on a town they all saved). The DM kept it up and I had to stop them and asked them to please quit doing that because I was getting real uncomfortable, and they stopped... For a bit. Session seven is where it all hit the fan, because not only did an NPC again touch my character, it was when he was bathing and the NPC kept talking about his "breasts" which all hit a major trigger. My fiance immediately took me to a different room until I was calm, didn't explain to the DM who was pissed when we came back, but I told them I was out which is where the DM got madder. Quoting them, and this is stuck in my head: "Come on! It wasn't even serious, you're just too sensitive for D&D! Female characters get flirted with all the time!" But my character was MALE, I and my fiance said I was NOT ok with ANY sexual stuff not even flirting, and I wasn't sensitive at all because literally two sessions before that I had my character straight up torture an enemy with a dagger to rip their nails off in an interogation! We didn't stick around to hear anymore and later found out for others in that group that about 90% ditched the moment we were gone because they were NOT finding it funny at all (DM apparently laughed and made jokes about how PTSD being some made up Millenial BS; I used to work in the medical field and I have literally worked with Veterans who suffered PTSD, kind of something we bonded with oddly and darkly enough, only mine was not from war and stuff but something closer to "home").
    I didn't play D&D for a few years after that until my fiance ran a campaign of Cyberpunk Red and I was hooked making a DJ character who worked for the mafia. Also, pieces I didn't say, during the DM's blowup towards me having a breakdown, they also kept calling me "she" repeatedly and made some inappropriate comments about my looks (Mostly how "ugly chicks" have no value; keep in mind I was engaged then and now and it's been a few years and also the DM was single having been divorced at some point during the early half of the campaign before I joined). My Sweetheart fiance kept correcting them at every turn and was beyond pissed the DM called me ugly and essentially called my health issues fake, that far beyond crossed a line.
    Sidenote: Not my first toxic DM but at least this one didn't draw a knife on me for not "playing right" (AKA playing how he wanted us to play; DM wanted their NPC leading us to be the hero and had so many rules, of which, we broke on purpose).

    I had one D&D session that went to 6am once. It was not supposed to go that long. We just got incredibly unlucky. We were trapped in a puzzle room which was on a generous timer. It should have been easy for us to unlock the door and move on and continue the planned path before we got to the spot the DM planned to end for the evening. Well, the entire group were just failing our rolls over and over and over. It was actually quite sad how bad everyone was rolling and failing to solve the last puzzle that would unlock the door. Well, the timer ran out and a combat started, and our rolls just continued to be horrible. No one died, but it really dragged things out. By the time we finished the fight, the sun was up and everyone was super tired and had stopped caring at all about what happens in the game. I discovered that if I'm sleep deprived I get really grumpy and am easy to anger which is SUPER unlike me. Everyone was too tired to drive so we all crashed around the living room of the hosting friend's place like a nerdy version of one of those crazy drinking house parties teens in movies have when their parents are gone for the weekend. So yeah, we made sure not to repeat that experience again. If we failed a timer puzzle room (or similar) again closer to our usual end time and got an encounter we weren't expecting to actually have to do, we'd end the session there and started the encounter in the next session.
