- We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest - Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible, where we are completely off grid.
Our food growing journey began together in 2017 when we created our first No dig lasagne bed. Every year we grow more and more and now we are currently around 60-70% self sufficient in our food needs.
Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.
In our videos you can follow our journey as we share our experiences and what we get up to at Freedom Forest. Autumn is a busy and super rewarding time 🧡 This season provides us with such variety of beautiful, colourful and viberant nutritious crops and it also brings with it a sense of completion as we begin to work though the more timely seasonal jobs, clear away Summer planting and gather in and store our harvests ready for the quieter Winter months ahead.
We are MASSIVELY grateful that you choose to watch our Videos and support us in this way, however, If you appreciate and get value from what we share and would like to help us a little more, you can become a Freedom Forest Patreon (link below).
It takes us about a day to film some video and another few evenings to edit it, Patreon provides a way you can support what we do with any size donation you wish, it could simply be the value of a packet of seeds! We have many projects coming up, as well as wanting to improve our videos with better camera equipment... maybe even a drone one day to make our videos even more detailed and better quality for you to enjoy! You can help make it viable for us to keep putting the time into making these videos by becoming a Patreon. In return your name will appear in the end credits of our videos and we'll message you a password for the 'members area' of our website where we share more of our favourite recipes exclusively for our Patreon's 💚

Congrats on your storage space! I can only immagine how good it feels to have all this harvest, that you put so much love into. It looks amazing! 👨🌾💚🌿
Thank you so much! It is a pretty good feeling having it all nicely stored and ready to use - thanks for watching as always 💚 oh and I have been really enjoying the Artemisa Annua Tincture I have made, I actually REALLY like the taste of it - Haven't tried it as tea yet - infact I'd forgotten I'd dried some until writing this right now!! 😆 So I think I will have the tea in a minute now too 🙏
So nice! I also like the taste of the Artemisia annua tincture. I find, it's almost like a herbal liqueur, but without sugar. The tea will be more bitter... 😉
@@pandhari108 I LOVED the tea too - didn’t seem too bitter (for my taste anyway) 😃 almost like a slightly sweet diet of mild aniseed . I put a little holy basil with it too and it was DELICIOUS 🙏🙏🙏
Great food store.
Thanks 💚 Still got a LOT to do in there - it is going to be such an epic space when fully finished - we will share more as it comes together ✌️🌿
Love love love your channel guys 💚
Glad your loving it my friend - exactly what we hope for - make me super happy 🙏💗🙏
Just found your channel and loving it, so now I’m a new subscriber
Looking forward to watching both your channel and farmstead grow
Great content guys, wishing ye the best from the west of Ireland
Hi Mel, great to have you with us 💚 thanks for messaging & subscribing 🙏 I love Ireland, beautiful place and lovely people - see you here again soon. 🌸✌️🌿
Do you have a video on the build of the storage space? Thanks--I'm enjoying your videos. They keep my morale up here on our Dartmoor homestead.
Hi, glad you are enjoying our vids 🙏 we don’t have a full build video unfortunately, it’s been an on going and also evolving project over the last 2 yrs 😆 we do prob have various bits of footage though, so I may be able to piece something together if winter - it’s good to know what people would like to see 🙏 thanks for watching and commenting 💚✌️🌿
Wow it's all looking so productive and beautiful, and your new storage shed is amazing 😍. You're so blessed with the chestnuts, I love them and we have about 3 or 4 chestnut trees in one of our hedges but they rarely produce edible fruits here in Shropshire, and any that do grow usually get eaten by the squirrels. I think maybe we're just a bit too far north for them.
How old are your chestnut trees Jan? They may fruit evenutally if the are young ish... or if climate change really is heating things up, you may get some in a few years! 🤔 We border an ancient woodland on that side, so ours are pretty old 🙏 they are such a valuable crop - very grateful 🙏 The Store is coming alone now - so ready for this space - its so nice to be more organised this year - Still got to put the log burner in there though just in case it gets really cold! Thanks for watching/messaging Jan 🙏
@@freedomforestlife sorry I missed this! They're about 20 years old, so still fairly young but they do produce quite a lot of nuts, but unfortunately most of them are small and skinny. Maybe they'll do better when they're older, but I think it might just be because we're a bit far north for them. We did get quite a few last summer when it was really hot, but this year I've literally found two or three edible ones. Enjoy your lovely harvest 😋😁
I love the storage space. Its been such an odd growing year! I am about to say goodbye to our tomatoes, they have been awesome but everything else has been all out of kilter! We have our garlic, onions and leeks in and still have carrots to pull in the next few months. Feeling a liitle sad at the end of the summer/autumn growing and harvest season..i know thats normal but i hope to find the strength to push past that and fuel the winter crops. Best wishes to all you Uk winter growers! xxx
Hey Chritina, Yep - it has been another interesting growing season ... no two ever seem to be the same though I think 😆 It kinda keeps it exciting though and keeps us on our toes, making sure we grow more diversity of crops to make sure we get some things 🙌 I have really up and down days in terms of motivation at this time of year too - it can be challenging to find the balance between getting certain things done and also slowing down and enjoying the change I feel ... No matter what though, it all seems to work out in the end 😊 Its been a lovely Sunday here today. I hope you had some motivational up lifting sun too. 🤗💚✌️🌿
Algo rhythmic 🪘🎼🎵🌾 comment. Nice gardens.
🙏🌸💖✌️🌿
Planted my winter onions, French and elephant garlic as well as shallot yesterday. Absolutely lovely storage. I’m so jealous 😊
Wow - you are on it - Super organised - Good on you 💚 I always mean to do Onions now ish - but always end up just doing seed early in the new year 😆 So happy with our food store 🧡🙏🧡very exciting 🙌 thanks for watching as always ✌️🌿
I hope to be able to grow some of my own food someday. What a joy!
It sure is 💚 I really hope you get to do this too - it is one of the most rewarding and health giving things you can do for yourself I think ✌️🌿
love your storage room, great job! thanks for sharing
Thanks so much! 😊 and thanks for watching/messaging 💚✌️🌿
Harvested my first mature outdoor tromboncino earlier this week (it wasn't quite ready but it was showing a tiny bit of frost damage) - cooked some of it up, both roasted in the oven and steamed in a pressure cooker, and it tastes good. Should have another ~25kg to harvest in the coming weeks, so very happy with the crop this season and am saving plenty of seed for next year. Thanks for the tip to grow this useful and productive squash.
I still have nasturtiums flowering everywhere, plus a large number of ladybird larvae on them that are yet to pupate so i'm reluctant to disturb them until they've completed their cycle (need their help next year!). Meanwhile all my little winter plant plugs are being delayed going out, but it just seems like the right thing to do.
Any update on the success your friend had with growing the cherokee purple tomatoes outdoors this year? I'm still aiming to give them a try next season.
Hey Tony - So pleased to hear you are loving the Trombones 🙌 AND that you've had good success with them outdoor too 💚 They are certainly a prolific crop. Your haul will hopefully see you nicely through winter 😋 I think the Cherokee grow OK outdoors, I know I had one message a while back saying the flavour was very good, haven't checked in since to see... I will ask ...
Lovely hearing your update Tony and thanks for watching as always 🙏✌️🌿
Hi love your updates! I learn lots from you. What was the pipe going thro your poly tunnel?
Hi Jean - so glad your enjoying our videos 🙏 the pipe is our drip line watering system. Couple videos we’ve previously made about it here if you’d like to know more 💚

Hey Laurie and Dan! G'day from Down Under! In my food forest, I grow Macadamia Nuts and make milk out of them. Can you do the same with your Chestnuts? Cheers!
Hi Craig, I’m not sure - will have to look into that - I guess it would be possible though - great idea 🙏 wow macadamia nuts - they are delicious 😋 ✌️🌿
I really, really, really need a poly tunnel like yours.
Have you ever considered installing a groundfridge as a root cellar storage?
I hope you get one too - what we can grow in this space alone can create a good level of self sufficiency!!! 🙌 Premier Polytunnels are the guys we use in the UK, good for price and service 🙏
We may do a ground fridge type thing one day ... I would LOVE a root cellar, would be hard to place on our land though, there is usually a way around things though 😊 Thanks for watch/messaing ✌️🌿
Great video Laurie .. love your storage shed .. that’s a bit of a dream come true! Xx
@@robynlloyd6414 Robyn- so nice to hear from you/see you here 💚🙏💚 I’ve been think of you the last few weeks with the realisation of how long it’s been since we were last in touch!!! 🤪 how are you??? Having the dried a bit organised is flipping amazing- we’ve still got a lot to do in there before the whole place is finished but we can see it all coming together finally now AND our crops should be safe for winter at least now … log burner being connected up in there (soon hopefully) too so we can keep it warmer in there on any really hash nights. It’s going to be dans workshop/music studio too 🙏😘🙏
May seem like an ignorant question but are you able to grow all year round? Also in the wintter? I’m from a warm climate and we can can grow year round so wondered how it works over there
Hi, this is a great a question if you are not familiar with a temperate climate. Here in the south of England we get some of the most favourable weather conditions the UK can offer, our main growing season is between March to October, with our main harvest times being from some time in June to November. We can grow some crops outside through winter, like Garlic and some hardier greens and with the protection of our polytunnels we can grow salad, certain herbs, spring onions and things like that through winter, although growth is much slower! Hence we grow a lot of crops that we can store and use through winter when fresh food is less. Hope that gives you a better idea - Where abouts in the world you gardening? Thanks for watching and for your interest 🙏✌️🌿
@@freedomforestlife try Hank yh for the detailed answer and it really gives me a great idea 😊
I am from South Africa and I used to live inland (which you can grow all year) and moved down to the coast where it’s also possible to grow all year. We really have god weather year round and I would say only have very cold spell perhaps 2-3 weeks of the year in Mid July to end of July.
We like to joke that we only have two season Summer and Winter. Because Autumn still feel like summer and Spring feels like Summer.
