- 1 year time lapse sharing a year in our life on our UK Farmstead, what we grow in a year, how we garden and live self sufficiently in the UK.
Each year we try new things to become more and more self sufficient, move with the seasons and live life farm to table.
We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest - Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible, where we are completely off grid.
Each year we expand and grow more, currently we are around 60-70% self sufficient in our food needs year round.
Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.

It all begins again 😁 A great year video, thankyou for sharing. Every year is just a learning. We didnt have the best year,as the weather down here has been all over the place. Things that worked well last year,didnt this year, and visa versa. Thats ok, we have taken all that knowledge and will apply it to next year. It was a very 'interesting' growing season here .... yet again! I don't think any two years are the same you know! But all the learning helps us to be more prepared and hone our methods like you say. I noticed this year a lot of critters that don't normally come in until early to mid winter, all started a lot earlier this year .. I can only assume it was due to the dampness and below average sunshine hours! All which have they're own challenges alone! What seeds have you started already? I always mean to start onions in Jan, but never get to it until we have a propagation area tidy! 😆 💚✌️🌿
Hi, we have some baby purple sprouting, caulis, beets and a few odd things in the polytunnel and outdoors, we still have chard thriving, purple sprouting,cabbages and left over broccolis,plus tons of onions and garlics in.
Im starting some early tomato seeds and more caulis too, so its quite slow but do to have something on the go. I have to clean the polytunnel asap, but its so cold out there hahaha! i will do it! I also have to clear out the polytunnel storage areas because we had visitors a while back, so i want to get rid of stuff we dont need etc and simplify the area, hopefully derterring them abit. re: spuds. you should harvest them when the foilage dies back to brown. plus put the biggest spud out of the pull back in teh ground and ule have more end of october. u could put your lettuces in with them and then ule have seed heads for next years lettuces rather than buy more seeds. down south, you really dont need to grow tomatoes in polytunnels. uve got decent outdoor temperatures. that prevent your leaf curl
Hi thanks for the suggestions. We did used to grow Tomatoes outside also, but they nearly alway blight early - often just at fruiting stage, so we switched to growing them undercover only for this reason, I'm trialing a few different varieties this year and also growing more cherry types to hopefully bring their productivity back up 💚 Thanks for watching/commenting ✌️🌿
Wow what a beautiful place this is similar to what I what I working on only have a 1 1/2 acres but but in Maine with out green house it makes it little difficult that what I’m working on this year

Thank you 🙏 I'm not sure what we do differently to anyone else, we just try lots of different crops and nuture them as best we can. By growing a diverse range of crops, every year something(s) delicious will be abundant. It can change from year to year - we are fortunate to have the space to be able to experiment. 60% self sufficient is a great achievement. I wonder what you are missing though to make up the remaining 40?
Hi Graham - mostly its grains ... Wheat, Rice, Portidge Oats - we could increase on that 60% if we choose to change our diet more, away from our western 'traditional' style of eating more ... say if we fried off potatoes and green etc for breakfast (which is often our least self sufficient meal of the day depending on the season) we do make more changes over time, so will probably get to this eventually, also when we learn to grind/use our own flour corn more, this should help too - will come in time 💚 thanks for watching and for you interest ✌️🌿

Gardening is such an spiritual experience for me, I would love to hear birds and winds and rain melodies, but I totally understand if you are having background noises like traffic or neighbor's lawnmower you may need music to cover that! Love from California! @@freedomforestlife
A very succesful year for you guys and all the hard work is paying off. I'm still gorging myself on tromboncino, jerusalem artichoke, and yacon (tried it both dehydrated and fermented this time - both processes give the yacon yet further uses, one sweet the other savoury, so worth trying with any surplus).
Looking forward to sowing some Cherokee Purple seeds in a few weeks time!
Thats a great reminder Tony - thank you - I have been meaning to get on and ferment some JA and make some crisps, I tend to do crisps in the oven at this time of year, due to length of time in the dehydrator, but if this sun keeps coming I may be able to use it ... Hadn't though of fermenting the Yacon too, so I will try that, if you think its nice? I do prefer JA crisps over the Yacon ones though have to say, but anything home grown is still a pleasure 💚 ✌️🌿
@@freedomforestlife Fermented yacon is worth a try if you like things like chutneys and pickles. The process gives the yacon a savoury taste and i'm finding it goes rather well in small quantity with things like cheese and biscuits. The preparation process is quick pretty simple...chop/grate some peeled yacon, add some spring water and sea salt, ferment in a clean breathable glass jar for 7-14 days until desired taste achieved. Then store in airtight jar in fridge - should last for quite a while.
PS - i tried dehydrating yacon slices (about 1cm thick chunks) in the oven at a low temperature. They took about 7 hours and turned out soft and chewy, full of flavour and very sweet. I could only eat one of them at a time due to the sweetness but i reckon adventurous kids would devour them. The only drawback of this method is i don't believe they'd store for too long (maybe a week or so).
@@tonyr7393 This is such good into tony - Thank you for sharing - Yes, I find even when roasting Yacon it takes a suprising long time to cook, especially to the point of getting the sugars to release! I don't think the JA's take quite that long in the oven. Will defo ferment some Yacon though 🙌🙏💚

incredible, good job, inspiring ; ( next year, start ) i'm planning a food forest, off grid structure to live , building solarsystem, windgenerator , wormgrow ,name it... of course permaculture. i'm living in belgium , let's say : almost the same wether conditions less or more... Can you give me an indication of the amount of crops of used in relation to the space ? which variaties ? i'm searching something like 5 acre in the south of the land .So much i want to learn from you guys.... we'll keep in touch , kind regards , grts
Hi, Your plans sound amazing 💚 Our land overall here is approx 3.5 acres - we grow food on approximately 1 acre of that, which includes the Food Forest. We easily can grow enough food for 2 - 4 people with this space, we could grow a lot more intensively than we do, and produce a LOT more with better rotation/use of space (and some help) Focus on giving good space to staple crops that will also store well for winter, like pumpkins/winter squash and potatoes if you are aiming for self sufficiency, plant fruit trees as soon as possible and currents and fruit canes will give you fruit sooner. 32:42: May I ask what variety of watermelon did you grow? Yours looks very good, I tried orange king last year but didn't even get a single melon on it, it was a complete waste of time and space, definitely wanna try something else this year. 😕

ARe you producing the compost yourself or buy it in?
Hi, Last year was a mix of homemade and bought in compost, from a Green Waste site nearby, as we were just starting out with our big composting bays. By the end of this year we should be producing enough ourselves to re mulch exciting beds, so hope to only bring in when we put new beds/areas in 🙏 Thanks for watching 💚✌️🌿
why are they actually called "Jerusalem Artichokes"? I only know them as Topinambur
Ha. I don't know exactly, I think it has something to do with the pronouciation changing over many years, I don't believe it has any connects to Jerusalem directly, as far as my understanding goes ... would be cool if anyone out there as any more knowledge on that though 💚
Thats way too much food for Two people to eat in a year! Do you sell/ barter some of it? Or does it end up back on the compost heap?
Hi Cath, Very little ends up on our compost actually! But yes, we do always have more than we need - that however is a must when growing food for self sufficiency, as some years certain crops fail and you’ll never know ahead of time! We eat a plant based diet, so we do eat way more veggies then most I would guess and I try to be as creative as possible when it comes to using things up before they turn. Of course we have some loses from them things haven’t stored as long as they should etc, like the odd pumpkin etc. That being said, we probably do have more pumpkins than we need this year, but our sweet potato yield was less than normal, so we’ll eat more pumpkin this year instead and whenever we see a friend who would use a pumpkin, we gift them 🧡
