This music is from the movie "Gettysburg" as well as the talking. Beginning is Pickett. 4:45 is Confederate General Lowell Armested during his famous brigade charge during picketts charge. He was shot during the charge and later died. His best friend was General Hancock who was the General in charge of the Union Army at Gettysburg. They were able to say there goodbyes. Gettysburg is u far the best civil war film ever made and is up there with the greatest war films of all time. Been to Gettysburg PA 4 times one of my favorite plAces to visit.
Well, the Southerners certainly have had a lot more passionate stories told about them but the record doesn't show them to be any braver or more dashing than the boys on the other side of the line. Were they more courageous in Pickett's charge than the guys sewing their names onto their uniforms because they knew they were about to die walking into the guns at Cold Harbor? How about the boys who made the charge at Fredericksburg after watching thousands mowed down right in front of them?
Nicely done! I have written a play and subsequently it's been made into a movie called Witness to Gettysburg. Here's how I described Pickett's charge (adapted from a Confederate General's diary): "13,000 Confederate soldiers, in battlefield formation, depart protected woods and march across a mile of open, unprotected ground. As far, as wide as the eye can see, soldiers marching, their images shimmering in the waves of heat. Thousands of feet march amidst the stubble of the fields. Flags held high, flutter and snap in the wind. Sunlight flashes from the officer's swords. No words of command can be heard. In perfect order this gallant array of gallant men march straight into the valley, their valley, of death." That's just the beginning of course. Watching your video, I kept saying, "Dress that line! Dress that line!"
Sounds good but there's some inaccuracies in your statements. Pickett's Charge, for instance, did not take place in a valley, per say. The terrain was wide open farmland, so the video was also wrong in that respect. Orders were also repeated by sub commanders and lines dressed by Lieutenants and Sergeants, so orders could be heard. The amount of men was closer to 15,000; composed of 3 divisions. Also it would add some drama to your play to emphasize that some commanders refused to march and instead road on their horses. Additionally, Lee ordered the assault (it wasn't really a charge), because he thought his men could do anything, that they were invincible, an idea that he got from the Chancellorsville battle.
Patrick Chandler Hi Patrick, Thanks, but I added the words "their valley of death" as a literary nod to the poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade." Otherwise those words came straight out of the diary of a Confederate Officer, word for word. Can't recall his name off the top of my head, but there you have it.
Annette Hubbell We're you a drill sergeant by chance? That last part brought back memories of boot camp. "Dress to your right!!! Damn it! Dress to your right!!" "And Keep your cover!!!" "YOU, keep your cover!!" "Column left, HARCH! Pivot on the right foot! pivot on the right foot! Hut, two, tree, four, hut two tree, four!"
Lee did say this my friend but there is also a reason that Longstreet was Lee's choice over Jackson for the position of senior Lt Gen, and it was that way from the start.
What I loved about the confederates during the civil war was that even in defeat and such smaller numbers, they could still make the Union bleed and pay for every inch of ground. It showed a great amount of courage, determination, and just raw guts and gamble they had. I mean, after all, Vicksburg and Gettysburg were the decided turning points of the war, but it still took 2 years for the war to come to a complete end after that point. during which, even in victory, the Union paid dearly.
Lee, like most other confederates at that moment, believed they had wiped out the union cannons, since they stopped firing. So, Lee ordered the men forward believing they would take the union center, and win Gettysburg
While all this is very dramatic, the geography is all wrong as is the foilage.Seminary ridge has a line of trees, however once the Confederate stepped off there was no cover. There was a farm house toward the right end of the rebel line which allowed Union troops to advance and fire into the flanks of the seperated Confederate units. In addition, the ground behind Cemetary ridge is fairly flat. There isn't a slope leading down to the stone wall.
Not to mention various other times they showed courage, even in defeat. Pickets charge is a prime example. They knew it would be bloody and the price high. But they also knew that in order to achieve victory, fight they must. The fight for Little Roundtop. Time and time again they charged with little results. The hornet's nest at Shiloh. The men who fought and starved at Vicksburg. Those who fought and bled at the Stonewall at Manassass. For the North, for the South, it
@ginko27 The CSA also thought they took out the guns, because the union let up there fire and eventually stopped fooling the Confederates into advancing.
FUN FACT: did you know that Gen. Lee was actually heading to Harrisburg instead he took the wrong route which led to gettysburg. He believed that taking a capital in the north would cause fear and panic in the Union to have 2 different countries.
@ginko27 Longstreet also had strong doubt in lee's plan and actully he had to send infantry in as lee said he didnt just decide it and ordered his artillery to shoot at the enemy but save ammunition for the infantry assault but the confederatecy made it all the way to the union line and failed there.
There were allot of inept commanders during the civil war. the funniest thing though is that allot of these commanders who were so inept during the civil war actually did quite well in the earlier wars they fought in when they were commanding smaller forces.
This is how the battle went down: Robert E. Lee thought it would be a good idea to take the middle so he could roll up both union flanks. So he sent in Pickett's division, even though Longstreet was saying that it would be suicide. So when the Confederates advanced they got slaughtered immediately after reaching the wall got pushed back. Throughout the ordeal Pickett lost almost 75% of his division. Now can we agree that both sides were incredibly brave and willing to give up their lives.
@MrSmexyChickenn Are you kidding its called the chain of command, picket was ordered to make the charge and he wanted to make it so all he vould do was watch really te plan was thought out by senior commanders
no actually it was Longstreet that sent 5 divisions into the union flank at second manassas but I do not wish to start a war of words here so any more replies will not be answerd ( sorry for my spelling)
Pickett's charge was a success, if any of you dident notice. They did reach there destination without being stopped, they just retreated when the yank reinforcements came in.
I like seeing these...adds a little more of a visual element to imagine what it must've been like. Well done. What would've been cool is if you could've flown over the battle after and seen all the carnage. Well done.
@GIDAN2987 That is the neo-Confederate, Lost Cause position. The Southern states eagerly trampled over states' rights if it meant perpetuating or spreading slavery. In fact, the South dominated Congress and the White House well into the 1850s, often passing legislation that hurt the North and Midwest. It only started to change in the years leading to the Civil War, when their traditional dominance weakened. That is why I sometimes refer to the Civil War as the War of the Southern Hissy Fit.
um actually no we have very good sources from gettysburgh that except for garnett's brigade there was no fire fight. everything ive ever read says that.
Great video. I live in Gettysburg. I wish I could get a job helping make the kits of soldiers in these games look like the stuff they actually used! Then again, I don't have the talent to make a mod, myself!
funny thing is a unified USA would have crushed the brits, but once the iornclads hit the lake America was the most powerful country in the world, you control the sea you control the world.
At least for the artillery behind Hancock's Corp, right in the center of the path of Pickett's attack, it was a deliberate decision to conserve their ammunition for an attack they knew was imminent.
Hey. First off don't mouth off like you are now, and they did reach there destination, but at a cost. I never claimed they won, i just pointed out they reached the area they was ordered to go.
That casualty rate is a defeat no matter how you look at it. The charge was a failure, they were unable to hold their objective which was the whole point of the charge. It got a bunch of men killed, no more no less.
I think that no 15,000 men ever born could have marched across that field in the face of such fire and taken the high ground. The fact that Armistead and his band got as far as they did makes it romantic as all hell, but they died just the same. I suppose that modern artillery and armor would have won the day, but no current army then, no.
Strategy, my dear boy. Strategy. That's what they had in advantage to the Union, who up until about the halfway point, that being Gettysburg and beyond, attacked in disorganized fashion, mostly in piece-meal assults that were doomed to failure from the get go. Nothing against the men themselves that fought and died, but thier command was sorely lacking. McClellan had command 3 times and was ordered to take Lee 3 times. Yet 3 times he blundered and failed. As did pope, as did Burnside.
actually, Abe said it himself if he could of won the war without freeing the slaves, he would of. the only reason he made the war about slavery was to stop the british and french from supplying arms to the south.
Lel, it happens in Total War a lot, they should kind of remove the friendly fire thing, since it's kinda dumb that they can literally shoot out half a friendly unit that's in front of them when it's not intentional. Only stuff like artillery can still keep friendly fire. I know friendly fire is there for a realistic feature, but it's just silly that they can shoot friendlies right in front of them. It should be only turned on when the unit is in melee combat, if that's possible
yet my initial comment was not meant to dilute the courage and bravery of the North, but to commendate the South, who throughout the entirity of the war suffered from a sever lack of resources, material, weaponry and sheer numbers and yet time and time again continued to not only achieve baffling vicotries against the North, but making them bleed even in defeat. I been waiting forever for that. Thankfully Grand Tactician Civil War exists which surpasses anything Total War could make.
Just face it Gettysburg was Lee's mistake plain and simple Picket's charge never had a chance.

@Sabershield Yes they did shoot. But they did not stop while shooting, they shooted while advancing towards the wall.
