I really enjoyed it. My volunteer Fire Dept and a 4x4 brush truck since we had a good amount of fires in the woods and everyone was trained on it except me. My brother Fred purchased a 5 ton but he said everytime he went to the VFW he was filling it up but that was back 26 yrs. He always wanted one but his Wifey made him sell it. I road in it and was confusing to me with all the switches but loved just going for the ride even if it was a mile or so yes he could get some speed out of it. He was in the Army and worked on everything plus he was a helicopter pilot as well as a mechanic on all the birds they had. We loved trucks more than anything else. Keep it coming.

Runaway diesels are not a big issue, it is rare. If you are worried, carry a big c02 fire extinguisher and use that to smother the engine from lack of oxygen.

Slow leak like yesterday is most likely a bead issue or a valve stem core leak. If previous owner ever had flat while offroad it could have got debris between tire and rim. Possibly might have a tiny bit of rust in there causing leak. Stem cores can be a royal pain or just not seated tight enough.

I think by putting the bag over the air intake, cutting off the air supply caused the engine to try and drawl more fuel. It's a old trick I was taught long time ago. It helps unclog a clogged fuel filter

I need to sell my jumper cables for these trucks too.

if it helps the air tanks are not divided by brakes, just simply primary and auxilury. they're are sort of daisy chained. i know the comercial rigs at work have a 90 psi cut off valve for auxiluries. and yes the brake valbe should pop out and not go in below 60 psi.

  • @crerus75
    @crerus75 2 ปีที่แล้ว

If you're really worried about a runaway, keep a big CO2 fire extinguisher in the cab. If you fire it into the intake, the CO2 will displace the oxygen and shut the engine down. You want a CO2 type because it won't send any residue into the engine, unlike a powder or wet chemical type which will make a mess. Just remember that runaways happen quickly and you won't have much time to wrestle a 20 lb. CO2 extinguisher out of the cab and empty it into the intake. It's a last ditch effort to keep the engine from coming apart.

When I was an explorer and the fire department. Are all Detroit Diesel would always carry a CO2 fire extinguisher in the cab. Reason why is that the CO2 fire extinguisher sprayed inside the air intake would stop the engine and take the oxygen away do not do it with an ABC or d fire signature those have a chemical but if you use a CO2 you're just pumping CO2 into the air intake thus taking the oxygen away and shutting the engine down

Being totally disgusted with your "Probably better than what the military does, honestly." comment. I was about to move on and not watch further. Then I decided I would watch as much as I could stomach before cutting you off with no further viewing of this channel. I always comment to help with algorithms however and new this would possibly be of use as well.
There is little redemption in the act of doing a pretty good tour of the vehicle overall, and it seems that you are acutely aware of the need to regularly bleed the air tanks if you are going to leave them for practically any amount of time. Not that it's always necessary, but it tends to be a good habit.
Another thing that I'm pretty sure you might actually know about is that if you keep your side window up and open up the front it can be quite comfortable with the cushion of air riding just in front of you, even on a relatively dusty road.
You are totally correct in being aware of run away engines. Maintenance can mitigate a major portion of that problem, but it's always good to have a backup solution. Most of us have done things like pull battery cables and yank wires attempt to twist fuel valves starve systems of air, but a well organized plan is always better than what happens in an emergency.

    RUNAWAY.
    1. carry a LARGE capacity CO2 extinguisher to spray in the intake and don't let up until the engine dies or you run out.
    2. A powdered extinguisher would work but ruin your filter, then who cares?
    3. put it in 5th gear and dump the clutch---oops, you're automatic so for those with manual shift and hit the brakes.
Lastly, take it swimming like your Toyota.😊

Yes technically you need a CDL for this since it is full air brakes. But if you register it as an antique you don't need special license

My guess is when they bobbed the truck they used the intermediate axle not the rear. You lost the locker when they removed the rear axle. In my experience the military didn't put locker in the intermediate axles because two rear axles with locker would negate the front tires ability to turn the truck on any surface other than dry blacktop.

The windshield folds down so that in combat a bullet will not shatter the windshield and spray you with glass, or at best obscure your vision at a crucial moment (which there are a lot of when you're under fire). Before you drive into the river, replace that air line that pressurizes the rear axle/differential - a cooling axle (when you're in cool water) will suck water in those little breathers, and your axle lube will be contaminated and diluted with river water. Expensive repair! Fun truck!

And you can fireback at enemy in front without breaking your own windows?

This is a fantastic production Chris. The benefits of compressing the full experience into a longform story are miles above the standard "watch a guy fix something". Those can be great videos but I get much more when you can understand the whole story.

Thanks! I was thinking on trying to keep everything into one video for this truck, but I end up with hours and hours of footage and it gets overwhelming. Keeping it in segments is much more overwhelming. Plus a lot of people probably don't care about the purchase details and operations of this truck. Most people probably just want to see getting her stuck in breaking some stuff! Lol. I appreciate your feedback

My brother was in the 8th Transportation Group, Vietnam. I was a helocopter pilot 155th Attack Helicopter Company, before it disbanded. His second tour he joined a gun truck crew, they modified 2.5 or 5 ton cargo trucks to a weapons platform changing out various armament. His favorite was the huge flamethrowers used on Zippo Raids.

PAC positive air cut off. It's a spring loaded steel disk for the intake pipe... If your scared look into it. But I have never heard of a diesel engine just running off without some other serious issues like missing piston rings or a turbo seal failure. Neither of which you will get if maintenance has been done regularly and rebuilding at the appropriate intervuls

One question. How much did you pay for the truck? Inquiring minds want to know.

The fuel shut off is electrical and when it fails it fails to off. The reason you have a hand throttle shut off is that on top of the fuel shut off valve there is a thumb screw that you can turn in to start the engine if the fuel shut off fails. Then use the hand fuel shut off to kill the engine make sure you leave the switches on as you do that.
