I’m suddenly struck by a fascinating idea; all the people in the from the depths setting are functionally robots, right? They use metal and other resources mined by the machines they build and place brains into in order to power themselves and their various factions. It wouldn’t be much of a stretch for any of them to fill a missile payload with resources and launch it at a place they need to make a delivery to, and reasonably expect the location to have the equipment on hand (or at least the ability to build the equipment) to collect the resources after they’ve crashed into the land or sea vaguely near their position. These factions could use missile the way us mortals use trucks, if they needed to.

Oh yes. This is going to be so very fun.
I could see this being used in a useful way. Perhaps making them smaller missiles inherit zero of the speed would allow the parent missile (with armor penetration) to rip a hole in the enemy, and the smaller missiles would then use that opening to get inside and absolute obliterate it's organs. Just a thought.

That is the most lath thing I've seen in a title in a while
I think a more subtle benefit is the increase in range you can get with a cluster missile. You whack a variable thruster on the biggun, set it real low so it travels further, whack a variable thruster on the littleuns and set it to max speed so they tear right into them. I wonder if this could make thumpers viable??
The normal (non variable) thruster produces more thrust than variable ones but only lasts 5 seconds. Use those for small kinetic rockets (unguided) which can rip through armour. Only bad thing is just how expensive that would be due to missile cost being crazy high.
For a non explosive version (since high explosive pushes other missiles off course) i would imagine an anti air version with pure frag, it would work like a shotgun missile, hitting everywhere and prone to breaking something important an exposed, wich for flyers is everything
If the game’s had an upgrade in the maximum engagement range, this would be great. If I’m remembering right getting the missile to the target was never much of an issue, you’d still be sacrificing payload for range. It would depend on exactly how much explosive each stage holds.

Lath, when building cluster missiles, definitely give the large one an armor head, but always give the container part one warhead so that it too deals some damage

Anti-shield missles. A large missle with a payload, that also carries small or medium emp missles.

Shields got removed in a patch, new ring shields work differently
EMP is still really good at shredding unprotected components though
the way i see it, there are 2 main functions it can serve:
1) rocket delivered torpedo
2) long range AA, by packing a lot of small missles that can catch a flyer into a large one that can deliver them close to a target

You could also use the cluster missiles as decoys almost, to distract an anti-missile system while your hard-hitting missiles go in

Hey Lathland, one thing I’ve found with tight clusters of missiles is that fragmentation is a bad idea. Mainly because if too many missiles fragment at once, a lot of the fragments despawn instantly.
See I was thinking that the small missiles could be flares or generally be fodder for anti missile tech, while the larger one carried the war head.

The swarm of magnets on the ground looks like a swarm of fleas, descending on the hapless vehicle. the ones in the ocean look like a school of minnows, or flying fish. i propose any of these as the name of the swarm magnet cluster bombs.

I haven't played for ages but I would guess you can use large missiles with lots of fuel to travel v long ranges, but theyll fly slowly due to lots of fuel for the amount of thrusters. Then when you get within anti missile range, the small missiles are released which are v fast to avoid anti missile with limited fuel and short range

One: you have one hell of a community.
Two: your community loves you and from the depths.
Three: It has been two years since the last from the depths video and everyone is loving that you are back at it again.

Imagine using the big boy as a Thumper missile. You get hit with a swarm of missiles and then this big lug just rams you.
This concept makes me wonder if I’ll at some point be able to make a missile that focuses in on a turret block and that comes from above to release the smaller missiles in a circle to burrow in from all sides to take out a crafts guns much more easily

This probably sounds very cheesy but I was ecstatic! I really struggled with school and that made it a hell of a lot easier to cope with! You can use the inheritance to ensure the parent stays ahead, taking the anti-missile munitions.
Nothing is better than the cluster mine. Even if they were entirely ineffective the pure joy of watching those things swarm the enemy is worth losing some ships over
Using clutter missiles to create large swaths of chaff might be a good use. Ton of flares going up at once is bound to confuse the heat seeking devices.
Can also just use them to deliver a payload further than normal. Having the big body have tons of fuel and fins while the smaller one contains the actual warheads. Like a staged rocket.

There may be an actual efficienty way to use the cluster missiles. Have the big one only for transport with lots of fuel so you can shoot it from very far away and have it release at very closer range medium missiles that barely have any fuel and are mostly just warheads. Or i've even seen the anti-missile missile go for the bombs in the water. What if you just have a bigger missile release a cloud of tiny missiles that don't even do anything to confuse the defense, should sort of work like chaff a very weird offensive sort of chaff
Sounds like you need to make a cruise missile that releases agile short range hunter missiles. Range and turning combined. Could be quite effective.
Watching this, even if it's an experiment with a new weapon type, still tells the tale of the plague guard's resilience so many years later.
I just had an idea for your magnet thing, use a ballast tank to make them float under the water line, and set up the distance and magnet timers so they spray into the lower hull of the target. Basically a rocket powered smart mine dispenser; also I thought about your question as to whether cluster mines or swarm torps are better; the cluster mines are. Since each torpedo needs to have space dedicated to fuel, guidance, the works; a mine is literally a mag head and a bunch of warheads, in other words very space efficient. Also if you think about it, a bunch of mini torps will have A: less range B: less durability C: less tunnel vision (they might stray to other targets) And D: Don’t look as cool.
Lathrix the best upside to the cluster missiles is being able to use a large slow long range missile to carry small fast swarm into range of enemy ships. Increasing the range of small missles that are more likely to slip through the defensiveses
