Owase Wappa - Handmade Wooden Bento Boxes

Owase has long been a producer of high-quality Japanese cypress. Owase Wappa, which is made using only carefully selected cypress from Owase, was originally used as a lunch box for the daily lives of men who worked in the mountains. Using traditional methods, carefully selected materials are carved, carefully bent, sewn together using cherry tree bark and lacquered in multiple layers. It takes more than a month to complete one Wappa because all 45 processes are done by hand by just one person. The lacquer sticks well to natural materials by using first-class products without any mixture. Due to the finicky natural material, the finish is a deep color that captivates those who hold it in their hands. “Owase Wappa, which is durable enough to be used for 100 years, has a “warmth” and “love” that cannot be experienced with artificial materials, and due to the natural materials result in a unique piece. In order to be loved by people, we are working on creating new lacquerware that matches modern life while preserving tradition.
