Historically they were called shinobi no mono. Hidden home features would also be common in homes outside of Iga during the Sengoku Jidai. Shuriken were part of kenjutsu and not just a shinobi thing. It's a bit of an improvement from the black clad warrior myth that is even further from being accurate, and still being exploited by theme parks claiming to be historically accurate.

2:33 In case anyone is finding it hard to locate this Matsumoto-toge trailhead on google maps (since it is not marked in English), you can search for '熊野古道・松本峠 登り口' (just copy paste it). One can reach this place by a 5 min bus ride from Kumanoshi station or about half an hour walk.

Love this art form, thank you for sharing something so precious with us. It goes so far beyond just being fashion with its rich history. It's immensely kind and gracious of you to say you hope more people will learn to work silks (whether that's on marudai or takadai), and I hope we both have long lives such that one day I might be able to meet you, and at least watch you, if not learn from you.

Mie in general doesn't get a lot of snowfall so if you don't want to go all the way up north to Tohoku / Hokkaido area to enjoy snow you can just visit this place.
