In the early fall of 1988 I was on vacation in Palm Springs and I saw a burgundy metallic Testarossa. I think it was the most beautiful automobile I have ever seen. An older gentleman was driving it. We were in my brothers 4 cylinder 88hp 1979 Ford Fairmont which could only beat a snail on a good day.
Sounds like my story. In high school on Friday night I was driving my '86 Chevy Cavalier around the shopping mall parking lot with some friends in the car. Just by luck there was a new Testarossa in front of me at the stop sign...he took off and I tried to stay right behind him...LOL.

I drove quite a few of these when I worked for Ferrari North America. What a beast. You don’t see designs like Pininfarina anymore. Those fins on the side are stellar. When we took the mufflers off an revved the engine, the sound was insanity. We had a special wrench to torque the wheel hubs to get it tight. No hammer needed. Great point concerning the visibility. I so wish I was as insouciant as Harry. Back in the day, I had a GPX750, same engine as yours but without the trick ally chassis. Loved it but it attracted someone who pulled out in front of me.

Sorry, but this has been naggin' me for a while now. Those cars with a single mirror were not nicknamed "Monoposto", That would mean a single pillar or post, and all cars have two(of course). Now, the nickname was "Monospecchio" which simply means single mirror or one mirror.
It has always been my favorite car. But I always experienced it external from the outside. Never really got the right feeling from other videos driving a TR. In this video I really got to feel the character of it. By watching you drive, listen, watch it move. The long range of gears. Simple, very solid. Much power. And to have that whole thing behind you and the sides, that rear. The classic wide back in my opinion one of the most elegant rears ever made yet very mysterious sort of hidden unapproachability kind of sense of it. I love it even more now.

Beautiful Ferrari! I remember being a fan of the Countach when I was about ten. However, I did fall in love with the '86 Testarossa once I saw it on Miami Vice. The cute 308 was already my favorite, but the new Testarossa looked so much like a Ferrari! I knew then, as I know now, that Ferrari is the only brand for me.
A friend of mine purchased an 88' Testarossa and took for a ride from Santa Barbara, CA to L.A on PCH. This car accelerates like a total "Bat Outta Hell" and handles like a comfortable go-cart. The amount of people that stare at you is ridiculous. Very fun cars!
Loved this - I’ve always seen these as symbolic of the worst parts of the 80s with the dated design and little else. Looking at it as a GT and not an out & out super car completely alters my perception and lets me appreciate it for what it really is - plus who wouldn’t love that engine sound!!
I love the early ones with the single mirror. What a fine collection of automobiles and bikes you have Harry and you use them all as intended. Good on you much respect.
by far the most beautiful sports car of all time. used to love playing the arcade game OutRun as you drove this car in it in 1987. just happened to see one on the street at 59th street and lexington avenue with a dad and his kid inside yesterday in new york city. i loved it in pics but i saw it in real life for the first time yesterday. that curve going from front to rear on the sides is stunning to see in real life. wow what a beautiful car.
Love how the driver's door in the TR sounds like the drivers door in your XJC. Then i get to the end Harry, and you have a laugh at the creakiness. Hilarious!
In the late 1980's I was a copper in London and I spotted one of these coming round the one way system in Stratford. I signalled for the car to pull over and asked the driver to show me the engine number. He complied and looking worried said "Is there a problem Officer did I contravene something?". I said "No it's just that I've never seen such a brilliant car before and I was desperate to see one up close!" He laughed and said "Yes it is rather a smasher isn't it?" then we had a good chat whilst he gave me the guided tour of the car. What a nice man!
One of the best Ferrari's in my opinion but also the best song about a car and i dare anyone to find a better song about a car but listen to this sone by Sir mix a lot - testarossa
Excellent video as always Harry. Maybe for the next one wear a chest mic so we hear more of you in the car, the Camera's onboard mic picks up quite a lot of road roar.
I'm resisting as having an additional mic would seriously complicate the edit. I used a new camera at the start of this vid and the mic isn't as good as the one in my old camera. Now I know, I'll do most of the in-car recording using the old camera..
Harry's garage Would that be the Sony RX100? I use a Zoom H2N and synching the audio to the camera's audio isn't tough and you could fit a directional mic in the car pointed to yourself. Gotta have good sound on videos like this!!
I rented one of these on one of my visits to Las Vegas. I think it was either an 89 or 91. It had such a great sound and it was like riding on rails. Loved the acceleration and the gated shifter, hate hate hated the clutch it was very heavy and painful to use in bumper to bumper traffic on the Las Vegas strip. The car was Red like this one with a tan interior and was quite the attention getter. If I could afford it I would consider getting one of my own.
I rented the Testerosa in year 2000 / 16 years ago for just shy of $1,000 for 24 hour rental at place on the Vegas strip. Also mileage was limited to 150 miles exceed that and you pay per mile. Not sure what it would cost now. The car itself was roughly 10 years old and they said they had it available for sale as well for around $80k. It did have some issues, the dash board lights didn't work, the flip up headlights would not go down and the engine would not restart after you had the car running for a while then turned it off. I would have to wait at least 5 mins till it would restart. They discounted the price for me do to having those issues.
Thank you Harry for this great video, it's great to see some people really living out their dreams, especially when they are down to earth, and not simply about looking the part. From one man to another, you sir are the man, Esse quam videri.
It's okay, the flat-12 layout gives it a distinctive sound but I'd like it to rev higher and have more of a power crescendo near the red line that it does currently. Other than that, it's great!

I saw a White one in Hawaii. far out. My favorite Ferrari by far!
The picture resembles Bacon or Spinoza. I'm awaiting approval of my economic math model in my book. Hopefully---it will be soon.
LOL! Notice how his grin grows wider the faster he goes!
Agreed. And it was designed as a GT. Not as a super sports car.
I think this is the best review of a car I have ever seen. True passion for a beautiful motor and yet fascinating and informative. Quality.
I owned one of these in the 80's (OK it was made by Burago).
I love the early ones with the single mirror. What a fine collection of automobiles and bikes you have Harry and you use them all as intended. Good on you much respect.
i've been waiting so long for this channel, YT just got a lot better :)
by far the most beautiful sports car of all time. used to love playing the arcade game OutRun as you drove this car in it in 1987. just happened to see one on the street at 59th street and lexington avenue with a dad and his kid inside yesterday in new york city. i loved it in pics but i saw it in real life for the first time yesterday. that curve going from front to rear on the sides is stunning to see in real life. wow what a beautiful car.
Miami Vice all over again! love it! :)
Love how the driver's door in the TR sounds like the drivers door in your XJC. Then i get to the end Harry, and you have a laugh at the creakiness. Hilarious!
Thank you for taking the time to make this amazing video.
Excellent excellent excellent.. Great review, great car, great engine sound. Love that flat 12 howl.
Thank you for this review of my all time favorite dream car. The Diablo come at nr 2 for me.
I appreciate your passion for quality, vintage cars. You do a great job explaining the features and feelings associated with high end automobiles.
Great video!
Love the umbrella at 9:37 ;)
I miss very much these detailed reviews on youtube! I suppose this is one of the best channels here.
The most beautiful Ferrari to this day for me. That arse.
Fantastic up close information on the 1987 Testarossa. You are my preferred car show to watch. Thank you
Excellent video as always Harry.
Diamond Hell It's an RX III judging by the size of the front element :)
the testarossa has always been my favourite dream car since I was 10. nice channel.
Ben7seven7 nice. Something about this sexy car gets me. Such a timeless, classic design.
I had to drive one of these in London, hated that clutch and gearshift. Sadly I never got the chance to drive one on a good road.
Thank you Harry for this great video, it's great to see some people really living out their dreams, especially when they are down to earth, and not simply about looking the part. From one man to another, you sir are the man, Esse quam videri.
Lovely sound out of that engine.
A typical Harry review : Very detailed, very informative, very honest. Keep up the good work !
Great informative video harry.. Keep it up
Testa tour from a true lover of fine automotive design who imparts that passion easily and with the familiarity of a close friend.
Harry... How would you rate this motor against everything you have driven?
It's okay, the flat-12 layout gives it a distinctive sound but I'd like it to rev higher and have more of a power crescendo near the red line that it does currently. Other than that, it's great!
Harry's garage Any chance of a review of the Mercedes SL600 up against a Jaguar XJS 6.0 V12. Great videos and excellent presenting Harry most interesting and enjoyable.
120 litres., V-12 a thirsty bugger built for speed.
I've still not fell out of love with this car. I saw my first one around 1989/90 Kingston Upon Thames. Business man in a suit. He saw me looking with my mouth gaping open. He gave a nod cos he knew I'd just been Testarossa'd! haha. Amazing. My Lotto win Dream car first purchase
Great review of a true classic, i remember admiring one of these in white in Miami vice. just subscribed to your channel.
My best dream car till now even there are so many stunning models of Ferrari now a days... Love it.
