Ferrari Testarossa to the Sahara. 2000mile adventure to the Sahara desert

  • Back in 1995, Richard Bremner drove a Ferrari 512M all the way from the Ferrari factory to the Sahara desert for Car Magazine. To celebrate this great story, I decided to drive my 1987 Ferrari Testarossa to the Yasmina Hotel next to the Erg Chebbi dunes in the Sahara Desert, the same hotel Richard stayed in twenty years ago.
Huge thanks to the following sponsors, who helped make this trip possible:

Maybe some other people havent had the same bad luck Ive had with these people. They isolate themselves in ghettos and dont want to learn our idiom and be civilised in a country that is providing them with economical aid and the chance to have a better life. As someone who's well aware of Morocco and Moroccan situation and politics I'd like answer some of Harrys questions about the police/speed traps/ and the drones.
1-Police presence everywhere is due to DAESH or the so called ISIS Group as it is making Morocco one of it main targets and Morocco is taking this seriously, and leaving nothing to randomness, Morocco is the biggest foreign investment country in the region and also one of it economical is tourism and both of these requires stability and safety (aside the safety of the population of course)
2- As for speed traps, this is due to a drastic plan to reduce road casualties, Morocco is suffering from this, and some tragedies did happen in recent months such as the children bus that had 36 kids dead or so. You can still hit 150mph in some roads but it's harder that it used to be, also people will flash lights on you to tell you about speed traps beforehand
3- Drones, you need to ask for authorization before hand to get one inside the country or else it will be confiscated. Drones were forbiden in the country for two reasons, one is that there isn't a legal status to them, and more importantly drone were used for criminal activities and preparation for terrorist acts hence no drones is allowed in the country since the beginning of 2015

@@MrHellfinger as a tourist not driving everywhere, the police presence didn't seem to be nearly as bad as he encountered. When I rented a car I had one police checkpoint between Marrakesh and Essaouira. Super nice guy, only wanted to see the paperwork for the car and my ID. Didn't ask anything of the three other people I was traveling with in the car. In the cities police totally left us alone. Really a great place to visit. You could swap Marrakesh for Fez and catch 90% of the experience of visiting both. Tangier was the only place I didn't like, it seemed to lose the Morocco charm and turn into a grimy semi european port city.

carrot5000 As far as I know he has said before that it makes the editing that much more complex and harder to do, and that sounds fair to me. He does it in his spare time around his real job after all! I'm just happy he is still doing these, I was gutted when he left EVO for loads of reasons but the main one was the videos he does!

Martin Aronsen thanks for the reality check. Keep forgetting about these emerging trends. Combustible engines may need a special permit and as you indicated the car driving itself and vehicle subscription being the main or only way of ownership (when really it’s a lease). With AI well advanced by then some beneficiary will lobby to repeal laws preventing a regular folk to drive the car. Only in a specific moment we would be allowed to override the AI. A special permit costing lots of money would be needed, only the rich would have someone driving or themselves.
      That’s horrendous. The horror!! 😱

Harry, I have a lot of admiration for you after watching this adventure. As you said in your other video, the review of the Testarossa, this is what he car was made for, Grand Touring. These Moroccan roads remind me so much of our roads in Australia, dusty and rough, and we don't hesitate to drive road cars on our dirt roads. Good on you! Thanks for not babying the Ferrari.

outstanding trip, I have been to morocco in 1982 and a family friend had a testarossa, chassis #19. But didn't experience both at same time. I do miss the honey tea and pastries no to mention the fun trips in the Ferrari before it was totaled.
Cheers and thanx for bringing back fond memories.

That trip reminds me of old italian comercials or movies, where theese kinda cars were driven in similar conditions (which seem to be normal, back in the day).
It's soo nice to see something like Testarossa wearing real road dirt, and having gravel bumps, flavored with that flat-12 soundtrack...
Also, nice "real world" interview of "what's it like, for a supercar owner, to have a long-distance commute, go thru customs etc..", brings one closer to the other side of a "golden gate". Hat's off to you, Sir!

I personally would be thrilled to see the return voyage as well. I believe Harry, you have convinced me to buy an older SL Mercedes (just a V8), for a longer road trip and as a daily driver. No need for super low profile tires, simply buy a grand tourer and enjoy this relatively inexpensive car today and its glorious style. These videos have been a pleasure.

I was about 10 mins in and then decided to press like button. Just as I pressed the like button the Ferrari chose not to start. This is proper road tripping. I did a proper road trip a decade ago with my friends with a crummy little Peugeot. It was one the best things i´ve done. The car broke down in the dutch motorway but the stories I had after that we´re so good. After 3 years of careful and determined look I bought an BMW z4 Coupe and I am so eager to do some kind of trip with it.
