    Ive been doing this for years now using my notes app on icloud. I have "buckets" and folders/groups for organizing everything from to do lists, large life goals, research notes, reflective writing, etc on and on...its been inteersting seeing my collection grow over the years (almost 2,000+ notes now) and going back to figure out what can be consolidated or regrouped differently. Really has changed the way I move and think about my knowledge archives.

      it's interesting. while i always considered doing this, i also worried that there was always a scary potential for losing notes, either they get burned or lost or whatever, or the cloud service i keep my notes on gets corrupted for any reason etc.
      another issue i personally considered was how accessible the knowledge really is if i have to consult with my notes to remind me, and to revert back to my first point, if you somehow lose access to these notes for any reason, what use they ever have?
      i am definitely nit picking though, i think i would love to take notes if i just wasn't so much more worried about losing them than taking them :P

    Already been doing this for a couple of years using Google docs and Keep. This works! Capturing emotions makes you rich enough to process more emotions because your past emotions are resolved. Writing things sorts your head and makes it ready to take more. Just be wary of not getting too obsessive about how much you capture and how well you organize it. The intent is to be organic here.

    That's the first time I realize how compact bigthink videos are - I've consumed a lot from tiago, and this video basically just "opens this chapter" in a really nice, friendly, and genuine way.
    That's literally just the "why you should have a second brain" component, and like... One toe in the water on how to start. Crazy how condensed that is, and I kind of... Don't needed it. I'm heads in, for months, really deep thinking this would get me further in, but it was rather a really good summary :D

    when I was younger I thought of creativity as combinatorics as in math. I then witnessed state of minds where creativity was not caused by thinking but a brilliant solution to a complex problem just happened by seeing the problem, e.g. in chess. I'm confident that it is just the amount of awareness that increases creativity, and the intelligent solution just happens. so thinking is really a dumbing down of the brain into abstract, fragmented pieces

  • @amanofnoreputation2164
    @amanofnoreputation2164 ปีที่แล้ว +72

    The problem I've found with saving information is that it displaces the need to retain it. So what happens then is that you find yourself needing a third brain to manage your second brain and then a fourth brain to manage your third brain managing your second brain.
    Why don't people communicate in an age when it can be done instantaneously? Because it can be done instantaneously so there's never any reason not to put it off. "I can do that anytime." And in this counterintuitive fashion that you might call "The law of reverse effort," the technology and timesaving measures that have made it possible to communicate at any time becomes no time. Never. Because the instant you save time, you just spend it again. The more you _can_ save time the more you are expected to save time and the bar just keeps rising.
    Whereas if the second brain isn't there, you feel the imperative to get something done with brain number one and it actually manifests. Brain number one is the only brain that will ever functionally exist. All these other brains can extend it's capacities in various ways but it always comes back to brain number one. Having two cars sounds better than having one, but you can only ever drive one of them at a time because you only have one body and can't be in two places at once.

      This is true until we have ai advancements that allow for a personal traveler to be with us, in our minds, at all times. @@boslyporshy6553 What most people these days mean when they say AI is generally Machine Learning (ML). You don't program the AI, you train it. Look up "perceptrons" or find the video about how a lab grown neurons were trained to play Pong. This is essentially how the whole brain works (as best as we understand so far).

      Very interesting cause for pause for thought. From experience, I agree with a lot of what you say. The biggest offset to what you mentioned though is that I have larger, overarching, easy to access and recall goals and aims in life, which pretty much all of my "second brain content" is related to. So for example, I don't have an online folder containing info that isn't related to projects I have, which are already ongoing. But yes, you are right, even then there is the danger of overstorage, and having stuff that I'll never refer back to. Hopefully not so much, though. Thanks for your pertinent and thoughtful input.

    • @harshitjain1
      @harshitjain1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely agree. Whenever you try to fragment your mind or self into parts, it creates a conflict of sorts. A manifestation like second brain wont work because it eventually is just you who has to manage it. What works for me is to leverage things like journal as a tool, but in the moment. I dont associate any permanancy to them, no states. I write to forget, not write to retain. I write, I die that moment, I forget and then next moment I wake up is anew just that the last moment's information is this moment's wisdom now.

    A family member is now living on her own for the first time and she doesn't use a calendar or a to-do list. I ask her to put something on her to-do list cuz it's not top priority but needs to be done in the next couple of months. Her strategy is to do it now or just remember... While taking care of things as they arrive on our plate is good to a degree, there are too many responsibilities to do that with everything and some things can be deferred to later. To-do list helps. To-do list is risky tool too cuz too many ppl make a list item "finish that online course" which is a big task and everytime you look at it, can't check it off so it's a sense of fail. Gotta make smaller tasks like "spend half hour on that course tomorrow".

    Wow! This is the convergent evolution of self-development. Over time as I experimented with different means of productivity management, I have basically come to the same conclusion. I use a second brain, which is various forms of software, such as notion, excel, notes etc. Not having to use your short term memory "RAM" to store information, when new and important information comes in, I will store it in Notion or other apps, to free up space in my RAM. That has improved my mental clarity tremendously ever since that system of "second brain" is up and running. This idea of RAM also ties into the book called "hyperfocus", which talks about freeing up your attention space. With the rise of ChatGPT, is another revolution, where we will begin to shift how we think about information. Information was always available through google, but with Chat GPT it is able to retrieve that information like a human brain. From now on, we really don't need to remember a lot of information, because it is at our finger tip. Instead we reallyshould work on capturing experiences, non-tangible information. Or even better, creating new and original information. Which then again fundamentally changes how information should be taught, aka how the schooling system should change.

      Building a Second Brain helps you to create a metaphorical mirror that helps you to reflect upon and evolve your first brain. It’s not just about "filling your cup" up with more information so you can be just more productive but about expanding your cup and your "presence", so you gain the capacity to understand and make sense of more complexity in life.

      @nollindwhachell ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LordBrittish I love your response! It’s so poignant! Actually they will "argue" with one another. It’s natural because your first brain, the ego part of it, is often driven by expectations of society to "fit in to survive." But over time, if you capture surprising and novel things as Tiago noted, your Second Brain will help your first brain to reflect upon and realize it wants to explore something deeper within itself, a larger sense of Self. One that can help you to "step out and thrive" in a newer unique way. But taking those steps and exploring something beyond what society expects of you can feel risky which is why this internal tension or arguing ensues with yourself. But in time, your Second Brain can help you to creatively "step out of your own way" (Alfonso Montuori) so the ego in your first brain begins to work with you rather than against you.

    Great video Tiago. This is most definitely the best distillation of your work to date, as you noted. I particularly like the second half that talks about capturing surprising and novel things whose meaning may be initially unclear because your logical mind isn’t perceiving it yet. But in doing so, it helps you to perceive how things connect and relate to one another in newer ways. This is a perfect foundation and staging point for exploring your future work as a Wisdom Worker and "helping others to feel through their uncertainty and fear to their truth", as it often requires us to expand our perception beyond its current limited expectations and beliefs to do so. Looking forward to your explorations with this in 2023.

Problem is when your head is piled with real life problems, it’s hard for you to even go back and take a look at the things you documented to move you or help you. So you end up going back for more information to save but you end up not even taking a look at them again. Not saying it doesn’t work or it’s not a good idea, it’s just also be wary of YOUR own unique situation in your life. What are you dealing with on a daily basis ON TOP OF the information overload?! Why do you keep going on social media for content at any little space you have?! Sometimes you might unconsciously go look for content because you might be dealing with too many issues that you’re not really ready to deal with.

    Look, I use Notion and appreciate it a lot. But Tiago talks elsewhere about integrating ChatGPT into his second brain, as a tool. How could anyone think that's a good idea? Language is as close as we get to a 1:1 for *how we think*. By allowing AI to write notes for you, you sacrifice autonomy in language. You can express your thoughts and your thinking autonomy by writing stuff down, not asking a bot to regurgitate rote probabilities and then reading that after.
    Also, productivity is important, but creativity *requires* time to just sit and think. That's how we make connections, not by taking in more content, not by forcing ourselves to produce, but by giving ourselves time and a blank page.
    It seems like a new generation (of entrepreneurs) is adopting high-promise technology without actually considering what they're giving up. I recommend Forte reads more Ong and McLuhan, and I recommend BigThink produces more *critical* content, which is not exactly the case here.

    • @nollindwhachell
      @nollindwhachell ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ewan, you raise some valid points. The thing people need to realize with ChatGPT though is that it is only effective and useful as your comprehension of the knowledge you’re using it on. Thus if you don’t understand the meaning of what it writes for you, it’s really not helping you at all. It’s just creating a facade for thinking you know something.
      So it’s not just about "capturing" the knowledge but "distilling" and "expressing" it. Where ChatGPT is helping me is being better able to articulate and "express" my work. But for me to use ChatGPT effectively in this way, I still have to be able to "distill" the knowledge I know and comprehend the meaning of it. Without that comprehension, I can’t critical determine if it’s "expressing" things in the way I want it to do so, thus helping me to communicate my work more clearly overall.
      BTW this directly relates as to why there is a flood of misinformation in our world today, with ChatGPT contributing to it, due to the way it’s built. It’s because most people do not fully understand and comprehend the meanings of things but assume they do. It’s not just about sitting and thinking about something. It’s about critically reflecting upon it by kind of walking around it in your mind and looking at it from multiple perspectives to fully understand it. Most people don’t do this today. They’ll do a quick Google search, read a snippet about something from one perspective (that often fits in with their worldview or perception of reality) and they suddenly assume they understand it. But they don’t. They’re often misperceiving the meaning of it.

And here in 202x, it's not even that I *can't* keep track of everything... I DON'T WANT TO ANYMORE. ☠️ There's too much information, it's all WAY too complicated, and it's become meaningless now. The whole "I've done everything within my pay grade" stuff has left me apathetic about existence. And everything else that I'd like to accomplish is totally barred off because of my lifelong financial situation (poverty). 💪😎✌️
    What these types of videos show (again and again) is that the wealthy prosper, but the poor will always collapse under their lack of resources. Everything looks better when people are rich, but it's merely that their CLOTHES, makeup, hair, lighting, tools, and techs are better. Nothing more than that.

      One day we'll sort things out à la the French Revolution. I, for one, can't wait. Working class solidarity needs to happen before revolution and they'll continue to mitigate our efforts every chance they get. Once the people realize we actually hold the power things will change.

      Make a list of what kind of information you want to be exposed to,
      restrict yourself to it with room for discoveries
      then you won't be overwhelmed by information
      you don't need a second brain you need priorities

    I'm trying to understand why they go back in history on how they did it? I feel that from history, we have learned, and based on this, we are on this present time. We need to forecast the future and prepare our own brains to adapt to the change. I think looking back and repeating what they did in the past will get us nowhere.

    What about all those prolific creative artists who have written/painted/composed/created works before the digital age commenced? They didn't have a digital second brain to fall back upon, like we do. One can even argue that digital technology is actually dulling the brains of people, rather than enhancing it.

    Tiago Forte, founder of Forte Labs and author of "Building A Second Brain," suggests that in our complex, information-rich lives, we need a second brain, a personal system for knowledge management. He recommends a four-step process called C.O.D.E. for capturing, organizing, distilling, and expressing information. This method is a reinvention of the age-old practice of keeping a Commonplace book, a central repository of information and content that is meaningful to an individual. By saving observations in a centralized place, one can drastically increase the odds of noticing connections and relating information. Forte also emphasizes the value of creativity and productivity, which he believes go hand in hand, and encourages individuals to apply tools and techniques from one domain to another.

    I got to the same conclusions years ago, used a notebook for some time, but since then I would love to have some kind of a digital tool to store the products of my mind. Never found anything good for that. For a while I thought this is about such a product, excited to try it, but no. Do let me know if you invent a good tool for storing whatever my mind produces in an efficient way.

    Big Think is one of the most greatest channel to ever exist and i can proudly say that. You guys go in to such great topics that help to develop a person.But there is one main flaw in how you present your videos. In todays work you need to express complex information in an easier and shorter manner but immediately when i click in your video one intelectual person shows up( no offense) and keeps on talking using complex word. You know one of the reasons why trump won is that he conveyed complex words in simple language and in a fun way. What you have is great concepts but boring execution. yOU Guys have a person who stands or sit infront of a white wall and keeps on talking. Try to make your concepts simpler and easier along with fun to understand.(love you)
