    Fact check time: The song was originally recorded by the band Looking Glass and released in 1973. It was written by guitarist and lead vocalist Elliot Lurie, who also wrote and sang "Brandy," their no 1 hit the prior year. This song spent 15 weeks on Billboard (just 1 week less than "Brandy"), but only peaked at 33 (for 2 weeks). Josie Cotton covered it in 1984.

    I'm here cuz local h covered brandy, and it made me realize that this band is not to be overlooked as far as 70s bands go.

    Always wondered about the line somewhere around the 1:28 mark that says, "She's not alone when she picks up the phone and she hears Jimmy say..." In other words, Jimmy loves Mary-Anne, but Mary-Anne? She just thinks it's alright, and she has another dude on the side... the one that was at her house when Jimmy called. I like thinking that's what the lyric means by "she's not alone..."

    • @ahcapella
      @ahcapella ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, I never caught that “she’s not alone” back in the day, lol. But it _does_ make sense, and is consistent with Jimmy loving Mary-Anne, but Mary-Anne only “thinks it’s alright.”

      Maryanne thinks it’s fine for her and Jimmy to be sweethearts. That’s how I interpret it

    Great song. More a 1960s pop song than from 1973, especially with that chorus, but still very lively.

    I was 12 when "Brandy" came out and have listened to it umpteen times. I have a pretty good Top 40 collection of the 60's-80's and not only do I not have this song I don't remember it. And while certainly not all encompassing, I have a pretty good mind for trivia from that time. Anyway, it doesn't suck but I don't think it gives "Brandy" a run for its money and so it faded into relative obscurity. Many times when a song like this pops up on my radar I'll listen to it and think, "Man! I forgot all about this song! I love this song! I must go to Amazon Music immediately and buy it!" Not so much here.

    This was a good follow-up to Brandy. The melody is not quite at the Brandy level, but the vocals are nice and the song has a good hook. I somehow reached him on line a couple years ago and he was just a prince. Gotta like that!

      I worked at a Top-Forty radio station from 1976 to 1980. We were AM, and we (or at least I) ALWAYS played this version, the one on Subway Serenade. It was an oldie by then, but our listeners always responded.
