When I was 5, my parents divorced, and during that 6-month battle I was sent to live with my grandparents, on Gramps' commercial dairy. I'm now 70, and can still remember our hoof guy. He was so much like you; gentle, thorough, expert, and he genuinely cared for our cows and the health of their feet. This is why I enjoy your videos so much.

I’ve been a veterinarian for 27 years (dogs and cats, mostly), but I’ve been completely disabled for two years due to rheumatoid arthritis. I can’t explain how much I miss working. I just found this channel a few days ago, and it’s helping me so much. I’m living vicariously through your care for the animals and you improving their comfort and quality of life so tremendously and expertly, so thank you! 🙏
Also, I commend your use of chlorhexidine when it’s indicated. :)
Edit: even though I primarily cared for dogs and cats, we had large animal and equine rotations in vet school, and I’d always hang out in the teaching hospital’s barn when I needed to de-stress my senior year. There was something about the smells, the gentle animals and even the more laid-back clinicians and clients that gave me a sense of peace. There’s nothing like taking a Holstein (clinic-owned pet steer!) or a llama for a walk to make things right in the world.

    • @jaykneegarner2479

Mine so much as touches hoof trimmings he gets in big trouble. 7 days of vomiting, diarrhea, and in general sick puppy behavior and the morning of his vet visit he finally pukes up a massive chunk of frog. Still took him in and had him checked over. Took a big chunk out of my wallet. Now he would have gone in sooner but he was the sensitive stomach type so daily vomiting and a bit of runs was somewhat normal for him. Vet was of the watch and wait variety, but bring him in if it gets worse. He thankfully grew out of most of it but I won’t take chances so hoof treats are forbidden.
Though I can still hear him complain when the vet techs stretched him out and held him down for his X-ray. You would have thought they were killing him. Funny but don’t need a repeat.

I have never met a dog who would turn down some horse hoof trimmings. Some would run in so fast and snatch them (we would try to discourage it until the trim was over, we didn't want any accidents to happen) but I would always make sure to sweep them up into a neat pile for the more she pups. Everyone got their fair share. The horses and dogs would always know the farriers truck the second she drove in the driveway.

    Excellent trim as always Nate!
I can somehow feel the satisfaction when peeling off those bigger chunks and finding where the horn still is attached, even though I've never put a knife or grinder on a hoof.
The use of what I assume is a plastic block on an organic farm made me question it, but that can be part of different country, different rules perhaps?
It could also be self-imposed rules for organic farming some use in my country.
I know there's blocks made of biodegradable materials, but then the materials used probably have to be organic also.

I love it when you can get the knife right under a huge chuck of loose horn and remove it in one complete swipe. To you, I bet it feels as satisfying to do as it is to watch.
I want to go back to @1:48 in this video. I am fully understanding and following 'white-line-lesions', what I'm not understanding is how you know that the small circular mark at the top of the lateral claw is not a problem. As you are preparing the lateral for a block, @6:57, I can now see that little circular mark was grinded out - gone, disappeared. But as a professional, how do you know that it isn't a problem before hand? And as you continue to prepare the lateral, why is it not important to search the inner center area of the lateral to know that you are not gluing into a problem where as the hardened glue would create pain if that bit of hoof had an underlying problem? I guess I'm asking how you know that area of the inner lateral is not a problem.
I want to add that you have such a "gentle hand"! Meaning that in your precision, you are still steady and 'gentle'. To me?, that's the makings of an excellent surgeon!

Why do I watch your videos? I don't have a cow, not going to get a cow but I still watch. I love your voice and explanations. Best of all you find a painful problem and fix it in a short video. Keep up the good work!

Question: Have you thought about using a water hose or some type of a pressured stream to wash away the farm debris that is on the hoof before you start to work? I know you can't apply any treatments until you expose the wound, but all the mud, grass, straw and debris can't be simply washed away?

It doesn't really matter, and anything like that would be unnecessary extra setup and cost. If you have something on your hand do you wash them before doing the dishes?

He mentioned and demonstrated why he doesnt do that in a past video. It's extr work and it makes the cow less calm and i know i wouldn't want to be wet in winte.

@@angelamay734 exactly, it would make the area around the crush muddy or icy even putting down sawdust like he does

You’re the best hoofer guy in TH-cam. You not only educate us in the process and give us a better understanding of what’s happening, but you are also very methodical in your approach to the problem and very gentle to the cow as well. The others hoofer guys I’ve seen are all bravado and for show only!

I don't eat meat, but I like these videos because Nate seems to really care about the cows even though they are being raise for death or other. He is helping these cows feel more comfortable before.

I knew it was a white line defect when you showed us the heel issue. I’m finally getting an idea of what you’re talking about. 😂😂😂 Although I still don’t know why TH-cam recommended hoof trimming videos or road drainage ones for that matter but I’m now enjoying them. Who knew?? 🤣🤣
