You can really notice he's a bad businessman when you consider he really undersells his food. Imagine you come into a restaurant that is deserted and the food is way too cheap, you'd probably think it's because it sucks. Meanwhile at the other side there's a pizza place and you reason "hey how could you fuck up pizza?" So you go there instead. It's also the fact that Bob uses top of the line ingredients and always has a burger of the day with fancy ingredients that the public at large may have no knowledge of, while a pizza place as the same ingredients anywhere you go and most people already know what pizza they like.
Damn, Bob’s speech is cold as fuck! Nothing crushes someone as completely as letting them know they don’t matter.
hey, I just want you to know that on the scale of the planet a single human, like you, is the equivalent of a single virus cell inside a human body. Meaningless and quickly crushed out of existence. Gotta say. One thing I've never understood about Bob's. He charges $6.50 for a full meal with excellent ingredients. It makes sense he's always broke, it doesn't make sense that his restaurant isn't constantly full.
See. Bob is located in a tourist town. Like Louise showed us during Art Crawl, toruists love gaudy crap. Pestos is like those scrappy chain restaurants with annoying decorations that people love for some reason. Bob has amazing food, but his crazy family and boring decor don't do him any favors.
That's the thing with Bob, as others have said. He is an artist, not a businessman. Artists are notoriously broke because outside of the process of making art, they seldom have the necessary grasp on how reality works to make a killer off of that work. Bob is at least successful enough to scrape by and support his family with his business, even if said business is just a front.
and hell he had a massive fill once at the end of the black garlic episode when everyone realised this man can cook and is local, and even then its not always full but when people are there its the same people because the food is worth it (also because animators rather use the same designs but shhhh)@@kronkrian100
@@kronkrian100I think that's a misunderstanding of that problem, honestly. A lot of the better artists out there have a full understanding of how the world works, they just think the world could work better and refuse to live in ways that run counter to this. there's an inherent lack of compliance with norms that comes with good art, and a stubborn unwillingness to compromise with that.
That stubbornness is more of the flaw here, it can become a downright self-destructive habit when somebody cannot tone down their principles to survive.

@@Thanathos2703 If I remember correctly, Bob came up with a burger that was made of up little meat balls instead of a beef patty. Jimmy pretty much stole the meatball idea and put a pizza spin on it. I could be wrong though.

I could use that confidence
I initially cringed during this episode, thinking, "Oh joy, Bob is back to letting Jimmy push his buttons." It was really bad when his wife and 2 best friends/regular customers TRIED to get through to Bob, yet he ignored them due to his stubborn pride. Heck, I wanted to punch that reporter guy for giving Bob the brush off at first....but then realized he's right. He was just doing his job when "some rando" came over and started screaming at him for no reason.
That's why this scene strikes so hard, as it shows Bob finally realizing that there's no POINT to his rivalry with Jimmy. Jimmy does have a more successful restaurant, but Bob has better food (plus it's clear the Belcher kids love their dad so much, whereas the Pesto kids rarely interact with Jimmy on screen, and when they do it's usually not positive). So yeah, Bob can focus on his creativity and keep succeeding, while Jimmy will just try to scrape the bottom of the barrel for any good ideas.
I really hope that this episode is the end of Jimmy and Bob's rivalry. Next time Bob is just minding his own business and Jimmy starts mocking him, Bob can just give him a wave and then go back to ignoring him.

As nice as that sounds, I really wanna see an episode where Jimmy, and Bob actually work together, and have a semi-friendship, kind of like Archer, and Barry developed in Archer, in the BarryBot episode.
That just may be the case, they fired Pesto's actor because he was part of the riot where they broke into the US Capitol a couple of years back

Maybe that's why jimmy picks on him. That bob may not be as successful as Jimmy, but he has people who love him for who he is and is more creative and a better cook than him. Jimmy Pesto is a bad father, he doesn't encourage Jimmy Junior's creativity. Trev only follows him because Jimmy is his only friend and Jimmy doesn't care for his well being.

I remember from the very first time I watched this scene, it became an instant classic.
I think deep down, Bob knows he's good, he just lacks drive and confidence. This is one of those episodes when he does realize.

Bob has a wife that lives him, 3 kids that adore him, friends that care for him. Jimmy just has a successful resturant, kids he couldn't care less about, and a yes man. The real reason Jimmy bullies Bob is because he knows Bob is a better man

Just a reminder that the description of the show since the beginning was that this was the story of the Belchers BEFORE they became successful. All these episodes where in their past
0:30 - something about the look on Bob’s face just makes it that much impactful in a way.
It’s like a mix between disappointment/ realization/contempt:
- Disappointment in himself for letting jimmy get the best of him all the time.
- Realization because he finally sees that his rivalry with jimmy achieves nothing
- Contempt at jimmy for stealing his idea and accepting that he’s not worth it anymore.
(0:40) And Bob’s line: “I’d rather be me than you…” is just so cold yet cathartic. It’s him accepting the fact that he is happy with who he is and what he has. In a way, he “found himself”.
It’s like teddy told him: “You should focus on your own happiness and not compare it to other people.”
Bob may not run a successful restaurant, but he has things that jimmy could never have:
- a wife that loves him and kids who (although crack jokes about him at his expense) genuinely love their father.
- True, loyal friends who are there for him when he needs them.
- The mind of a artist in cooking and is always making unique/quirky dishes.
He’s not a businessman, he’s an artist in cooking. That’s why he enjoys making burgers of the day, NOT making money. Sure making a good profit is important, but to Bob, making food with the love and effort he has makes it all the more valuable.
And the fact that Trev, who has been nothing but a “yes man” throughout most of the show’s run, actually acknowledging who the better man was in this conversation, just makes it feel more impactful for me….
My guy dropped the hardest Bob's Burger edit and thought he wouldn't notice
i feel like their entire dynamic is the creator of the show making a point about success.
i can imagine that at some point in achieving the feat of a wildly successful tv show, there was a point where he realized success didn't truly make him happy to have that, like jimmy. the relationships he has with the people he loves is truly what makes him happy, like bob.
It's funny you mention that because I remember all the shots Family Guy took at Bob's Burgers. Between the two shows, BB clears FG in terms of quality.

Jimmy Pesto is divorced, is almost never there for his kids, and almost no real friends. Bob is happily married to the woman of his dreams, has a special bond with each of his kids, and has a variety of friends who genuinely like him. As far as personal success goes, Bob wins easily.
Jimmy may have a more successful restaurant but Bob has heart and that’s something that’ll stick more to you aswell as good food ideas honestly go to Bobs Burgers than Pestos any day since you’ll have an atmosphere that’s welcoming and interactive
There is no greater satisfaction for an artist like Bob than the knowledge that the most successful thing a hack like Pesto can make is a shitty knock-off of one his lesser ideas...

Well season 13 is filled to the brim with these emotional episodes. I highly recommend you watch every episode if you haven't already. Easily the best season in my opinion.

@@ronanmcqueary5215 This episode actually marked the first appearance of Jimmy's new VA. He's been missing specifically because his old VA was fired, but whoever they got to replace him is certainly nailing the impression.
I'd like to think this is a way of the writers trying to push Bob and Jimmy's rivalry to the side after 14 seasons, but with how prominent his children are in the series, I doubt it'll be left at this.

This is basically Bobs Burgers to Family Guy. For one thing, Bobs Burgers doesn’t really care about Family Guy yet still has success while not only does Family Guy flaunt what little success they have, they mock Bob’s Burgers for all it’s worth.
Bob can always come up with new and better ideas, Jimmy only knows how to half ass and cheat. He’ll never have Bob’s creative passion, or his confidence, or his family’s love.

And that the episodes are still good. Seriously, a lot of shows unfortunately, tend to get rather bland after like 4 or 5 seasons. Family Guy, Simpsons, American Dad. Not to mention that the characters are reduced to a statuesque. While some episodes of Bob’s Burgers are skippable, they still have heart and that it’s a family that actually loves each other.

I watched a show where it concluded much the same way, the characters were figthing to try to retain the rights to a revolutionary new thruster for a spaceship or sonething like that.
Only to end up telling the company they could keep it because they acquired something far more valuable, the guy who invented it.
And that within a few years they'd improve the existing design or just make something totally new that would render it obsolete.
It still makes me laugh that jimmy pestos va was in that insurgency because jimmy would do that in the show

The episode where Trev went to Bob and Linda for advice as to stop giving Jimmy high fives is one of my least favorite plots as it was just Linda and Teddy just bullying Bob and even talking about some personal stuff.
Bullying is probably a bit much but I just feel bad for Bob when his family just make fun of him, not so much when some is just playful but still.

@@Rill_1 it failed as an insurrection, but they tried to do it. An insurrection is defined as an organized violent revolt against an established government. We know the leaders of the proud boys and oath keepers were in that mob texting each other, and all the people who got arrested were picked up on RICO charges. That covers the "organized" part of it. As for "violent", ask those four officers how violent it was. "Revolt against an established government" is a pretty direct way to describe the actions the mob was taking and their goal to make the government elect trump. We're not stupid.

Bob is such a gread written character. He is a good father and yes his Restaurant isn't popular but that is just because he doesn't really do marketing. He doesn't know how. But it is his passion ❤
