Dream Mats vs Gold Owl Mat. * Which one is better?

- Independent high banker test of the Dream Mats and the Gold Owl Mats. In this video I test the capture rates and loss rates of the two mats, and see what gold each mat can capture vs what it loses that the other mat captures. I try to keep this as even of a test as possible using one gram of gold which is a good mix of pickers, flakes and dust.

My wife and I love you channel. We have just started exploring with some basic pans. So far the adventure has been the only treasure found.
I found a spot where there is a large amount of pyrite flakes covering the sands on the river bank, does that mean that gold is more likely to be near it?
Also we don't have any real equipment so thanks for your advice, we will be investing into some more stuff based on your channel.

Aloha Dan, after living in Hawaii for 30 years I finally realized there isn't any Gold there. I moved back to Oregon years ago and just now getting involved with the people and clubs that are active. A new friend just gave me a 5 foot sluice with a little bit of old carpet. I just found some old astro turf and pressure washed it. I am invited to go to southern Oregon and join some new friends for as long as I can handle. I learn a lot and get so excited for my new adventures and OWL be back on you tube for more fun and informative videos! Thanks...niles

There was a gold owl, who thought he smelled fowl, and knew he was wrong when a rodent hopped along.With a high pitched wail, grabbed the rabbit by the tail, which quickly emptied it`s bowel. The only thing needed now was a towel for the owl.

As long as you have the permission of the landowner there is nothing to prevent you. Public beaches have been open-permission for decades. Just don't try it in the local park - even if there is no by-law prohibiting it any local council will write one specially for you, considering you might be having fun and they must put a stop to that sort of thing.

@@matthewwhelan2101 That would appear to be related only to commercial endeavours. There is open permission on all crown beaches to metal detect. I don't see how panning on a beach could be seen as any different other than in the shape of the tools and the lack of a need for batteries. Even so, it seems to be applicable only to crown properties. Even her maj can't just up and claim something found on someone else's land.

Ive never looked for gold but just ordered my first pan and looking at ideas for sluice boxes and gold mining in general as a hobby for this summer as im also building an off grid cabin next to a river so building, fishing and looking for gold is the plan. Your videos are very informative and well put together, much better than most of the other channels ive seen. Thank you for the info you put out, very interesting

I'm into recovery of the very, very fine gold from both volcanic and glacial deposits, and alike you, I'm building my own high-banker using some of your applications as well as several others in an attempt to separate the black sands more surely! Dan you are as wise as an OWL I watch your videos and have decided to make a sluice from that cheap plastic gutter from the building center 10 ft for a couple of bucks can make as long as I want I'm in Wisc where there's a little GOLD in the Great Lakes and rivers but all are much frozen now...I love your video delivery and enthusiasm..keep it up

Hi Dan, when I'm not in the creeks I will go to various Goldwill stores and look through the jewelry and old cups and dishes for our favorite crystal!! Yes, plenty cool cheap treasures. I even found 22k glazed ceramics in the goodwill.

Hi Dan! I’ve been watching your video for some time! And by chance I just ran across your mat Challenge.
Being a 30 year plus prospecter in Oregon.. great video! You could of spent another three hours on the subject. Your right it really doesn’t matter on the type of mat.. having said that if you over feed your sluice box or your water flow is not right and the proper angle of the box is off your mat will not help you. Other things that make a difference in mating is big gold or fine good and sand/gravel. But you know this already Dan great video.

I agree with your mat determination. There are so many more contributing factors. I screen down to 1/4 inch and metal detect my tailings and have found recovery is much better with smaller material going through the system. Who can't find a piece of gold that's 1/4 inch.
This is especially true when you dry wash.

Never tried GOLD OWL but have plenty of dream mat, ever sense I switched from traditional drop riffle matting to dream I've seen an my take is twice what it was. Love the videos as always and love the scenery your always going to thanks for the video Dan take care
Great stuff you old Owl! I have a stream sluice i refitted with GoldHog mats but have not really tried out yet as I live In FL. I'll test it when I go to LDMA Oconee, SC camp in August on a 3-day mining trip. The camp director has kindly said we can use their GodHog highbanker so I plan to put my stream sluice under the grizzle bars to catch the water and put some feed material directly in the sluice.

So I was at the creek, water flowing with only my Garret Pan's! Wishing on the owl in the day light, but the gold kept me seeking and learning; while I prepared and saved for the opportunity to have my sluice box, time an knowledge with hard work and dedication paid off but having a community to learn with is what is cherish the most. Only found a few pieces in each pan but it kept me going knowing I didn't get skunked. Now those are the days.

This was a very informative video! Being a raw newbie who just got his sluice couple of days ago, the comparison of these mats was an eye opener. I can't wait to get out n road test it. Thanks, Dan! I use Gold Hog mats in my bigger Keene sluice here in Colorado and have had great success. I have always wondered if using the Dream Mat would make a difference, but as you have proven, as long as the setup is correct, it shouldn't be significantly different. I am always experimenting with different layouts of the Gold Hog's, and it looks like I should also consider the OWL mat in my setup ;). Thanks again!

I have been looking to use dream mats in my sluices so i really like the owl of wisdom in sluicing giving us this gold nugget show on the use of different mats very good informative video Dan enjoyed it alot wish my sluice was as full as yours LOL but I enjoy the adventure as much as finding gold never can say I failed to have an enjoyable day out in nature putting in a little elbow grease while I am at it Thanks much for the video Dan!
