- Capture Fine Gold With A Simple River Sluice Modification
In this video I tackle a problem... (not being able to catch a significant amount of Very Fine Gold that was escaping my Standard Sluice Setup - the result being I was left with many buckets of Tailings ... way too much material for a blue bowl). So naturally I set about coming up with a solution that could handle bulk material. Adopting a common large scale sapphiring concept (the use of Vibrations), I set about and was able to modify and thus convert my ordinary River Sluice into a Vibration Bed... and an extremely effective one at that. Watch as I test run and tweak this vibration Bed to get fantastic results. It only cost me about $70 and a day or two of time. Anyone can do this.

You probably don’t want to think about how much gold you have thrown away over the years. Great idea
I know right.
Oh my goodness.
John is the real deal🤠. Grab a pen and take notes boys, schools in session lol.
Keep them coming John
Cheers mate
If you can't afford a concrete vibrator, a cheap orbital palm-sander is a good alternative. Buy a second-hand/used one, as they will trash their bearings if bolted securely. Mount it on springs.
Thanks for the suggestion. Regards Aussie
All it’s doing it’s mechanically breaking up the surface tension and allowing the surface gold to sink and gets trapped by the sluice box. Amazing video! Cheers from California! This is one of those one of kind think outside the box teachers that really know their stuff!
I saw this setup a year or so back when you did a clean up for Chris, you explained the setup/how/why. I immediately ordered a new sluice and vibration motor from that video.
Built my own, and love it!! I just now 38 minutes ago found your video, thanks for the set up idea. I’ve always thought adding vibration to the sluice would help settle more gold out. You proved it does. Thank you and God bless you sir‼️
good job sonny Jim
Well let's gooo!
So come on, let's goooo !
But you already knew that didn't ya boy
Cook em some eggs n beans jeff
Cheers mate. Regards Aussie
Thanks for sharing. Thanks for taking the time to film and edit all that. I enjoyed watching.
So glad to see your still on to as many ways as possible to recover the finest amount of gold. I have leart so much from all your TH-cam videos ❤it 😊😊😊
Thanks for that, great clip. You’ve really got great technique at explaining things- best I’ve seen on the net. 👍
Cheers mate. I appreciate the huge compliment. Regards Aussie
Great to see a vibrator on a sluice! I have been experimenting with a wand vibrator in a pail of material to concentrate heavies at the bottom before panning. It works quite well but it's not anywhere near as good as this!
That is absolutely amazing!! thank you for the detail and time you put into this video. I am gobsmacked at the incredible results
Thank you and you are most welcome. Regards Aussie
Excellent, you just increased the amount of recovered material by every prospector who watches your video by a minimum of 10%, thank you
Another very informative video, John. Really appreciate the time and effort that you put into making this video.
Very welcome and thank you. Regards Aussie
So glad I saw this video. I have asked Pat Keene about this very idea and we discussed it at length for not only already being used in commercial setups but how to get it into small personal setups on the go. I have heard about snipers going in after a commercial season and people getting good fines out of their tailings from the season. A lot of these commercial outfits can still benefit and it blows my mind they don’t do this especially since they run so long and run mats that don’t have active exchange and clean outs at more often intervals.
Another gentleman was talking about a two stage vibrator that not only changes RPM but also somehow frequency much like a sine wave testing generator for speakers. Meaning going through many frequencies to affect a better length of the box. But it seemed to be cheaper to run more vibrators along the length instead.
Nonetheless this was an awesome video and I’m finally glad to see others think like I do and also get good results
Thanks for the extra input mate. Glad you enjoyed it. Regards Aussie
@blech71
Has your buddy Pat Keene gotten in touch with you about your idea's LMAO! God bless mate
Top quality video. You know what your on about, and have a real knack for explaining what your doing! Thanks very much mate.
Thanks a lot for the huge thumbs up mate. Regards Aussie
Well done Champ, brilliantly described step by step. You're a master.
Thank you kindly! Regards Aussie
That is too cool, hope you find a bunch! Be safe be blessed.
This might be the best gold video on TH-cam, absolutely genius.
Furthermore, finally there is somebody that made a gold video that tests the tailings. Everybody wants the ooooos and ahhhhhs from looking at the gold, but nobody seems to want to do the most important work that of testing the tailings. It's like we live in a world of idiots.
I can't begin to tell you how happy I am to have found this video, made my day.
Great to see you back mate! What an awesome build. 👍👍
Good to be back mate. Regards John
Great job!
Dynamite job there, Mate, and explained super clearly....thank you for that and keep on keepin on.....
Bill
Thanks, will do! Regards Aussie
One of the Better Videos on the Tube!!!!... and Great Channel.... always learn something here!!!
Wow, thanks mate. Regards Aussie
My my my ... I've got some material to rerun! Good work man!
Just getting better and better. Great stuff John :-)
Cheers Richo. Regards John
Worked great! Nice
Hi John,
Well done John, a brilliant idea. Another masterclass.
All the best mate
Mark
Cheers Mark. Regards John
Very well done brilliant, another improvement you could add is a Variarc Transformer hooked into the inverter and the vibrator plugged into the Variarc by doing this you can control the voltage to your vibrator thus giving you many more options of vibration waves, full blast short fast waves turned down slower waves, I use a Variarc Transformer on my clean out sluice and can adjust the water flow Exactly the way I want it, you could do the same with your vibrator and get a variety of Different types of vibration that could even affect the gold better.
Yep. Good suggestion. This model was a fixed speed, but I can definitely see the benefit of a variable speed adjuster as there would most likely be an optimum frequency. Thanks for the input. Regards Aussie
Fantastic idea thanks
Great video and the comments outstanding. Seems you've collected a pretty savy group. Keep np the good work.
I always enjoy to se another man succeed! There are almost always a solution to new challenges..
Cheers mate and too true. Regards Aussie
Very cool!!!! Love new ideas
Love your new pup. He is adorable.
He is...and my Little mate. Regards Aussie
Score you did it Bravo Mate.
Crazy experiment that I wouldn't have guessed would have caught any gold, especially with carpet, tiny expanded metal, & big-ish rifles. A shaker sluice that still needs to be panned instead of a one and done shaker table. Hmm; idk; I guess it's good if you can't make a shaker table.
No videos for 3 years, No reply for a year; was interesting to think about though. Would like to figure out how to do fine gold recovery or most of it straight away. - Am thinkin tight roller screens to classify fine gold and sand at the moment, never thought about vibration as I thought it would compact or bounce gold out and wash away. Cool vid.
Thank you for sharing this with us totally afflicted fools of gold fever ... It put my mind in a spin of ideas branching out of your excellent innovation
It is winter here for the next 3 months , I've plenty of wood for the wood stove and no reason not to go build a sluice with a built on vibrator and start tuning it up . I have a dozen buckets of material containg loads of super fine gold
Thanks again !
So very impressive mate!
Thanks For Sharing.
I am always experimenting also, but your results are Absolutely Incredible
excellent teachings buddy, have been struggling with flour gold clean up's, this is a great method. thanks mate
Thanks mate. Glad to help. Regards Aussie
Wow Awesome Work!!! Thanx4posting!!! Cheers from Idaho!
Glad you enjoyed it mate. Thanks. Regards Aussie
Brilliant, excellent work, thank you very much for the video.
You are most welcome and thank you for the huge thumbs up. Regards Aussie
Nice take 🧈 thanks for sharing
i had this exact idea bro. awesome job! great stuff.
Great idea and well done👊 I've never panned before but I need to give it a go.. Thanks for the video👍
Thanks mate. You should. All the best. Regards Aussie
luv the bath-tub , excellent repurposing of something that would have otherwise gone to the land fill ..
Really cool set up for such fine gold. Keep on digging.
Thank you... and I will. Regards Aussie
STELLAR!!! Just a galaxy in your pan! Thank you! Brilliant!
Absolute awesomeness!!! Love your idea and you proved it works! Thank you John for that warm Aussie Love!
Adore your accent ❤❤❤
Coming from Alberta, Canada 🇨🇦❤ Love Australia 🇦🇺 ❤

The legend is back 👍
Excellent production mate and very informative. Well done getting that extra fine gold 👌 Best part of an extra $500 and absolutely worth the effort. You are a very successful and deserving prospector John.
Cheers Neil. Thanks for the kind words. All the best. Regards John
Very good job.
I'm not a prospector but that stuff will increase my knowledge. Thanks
Fantastic innovation mate ! Looks like it does a nice job trapping those fines. Keep up the good work. Cheers !!
Cheers mate. Regards Aussie
Wow!!!! That was very impressive... I never in a million would have thought you would have gotten that much gold... thanks for sharing
You're welcome. Yep...It's amazing how much fine Gold can escape a conventional set-up. Regards Aussie
I love this it’s just like you topping the pan pretty much the same but a faster way top job 💪
It is ...just on a larger scale. Cheers. Regards Aussie
Good job being so thorough in checking and double checking the tailings. I live near an area with loads of super fine gold and this really caught my attention and got me thinking.
Cheers mate. Yep it's amazing how much fine gold is out there. All the best with it. Regards Aussie
Just noting - your tailings bucket is being vibrated throughout the process somewhat, which means that gold will may be settling downward in the tailings bucket, and therefore won't be in a scoop from the top of the bucket. It would be worth panning down further throughout your tailings bucket to understand whether any gold is getting through. The reason I mention this is that you said the material is getting compacted on your sluice, and gold has a very hard time moving through compacted material. Just something too think about. Thanks for your video.
Excellent video
You showed me how to crevice on you tube
Years ago! You are the boss! Thanks from Texas!
Glad to have helped so far around the globe. Regards Aussie
I found lots of mustard gold here in Idaho where we go for the summer and I'm not telling where at yet but I will at a later date but this is a great idea and I will be using this idea when I get up to the river that I go to good job mate keep it up
Thanks mate. Sounds great! I hope it works for you. Let me know. Regards Aussie
absolutely love this video, thanks
Very interesting information and awesome cheap method to obtain gold thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it mate. Regards Aussie
You have a bloody great thing there mate 👍
Thats swesome! I am hand panning a bucket full of flour gold and mica tailing and I was so sure that I type of vibration would carry and collect but I don't have your experience or equipment but I will now rig up something and give it a go. Cheers
Great job man very good idea i would like to try it thank you .
I am in the Mississippi river valley area and all we really have here is fine gold. I know a place with a really exceptional amount of it, but I've been struggling to figure out how to recover it. I think you've given me a really good thought though! Thanks for the video. I'm going to take my 9 year old son and my partner to that really good spot early next week. He's never been there but she has. Last time we went though, we really had no clue how to find gold. This time we're going in with a plan and a lot better equipment!
This is great for the sulfide ores I am running into in Western States in the US. Thanks brother!
Really glad I could help ...all the way from Oz. Cheers. Regards Aussie
Thanks for the vid.👍
I like your riffle set up, similar to mine. About 8 years ago I was determined to make a riffle tray that could handle a variation in water flow and make the tray angle / pump size not so critical and catch a broader size of gold. To achieve that I had to reduce the size of the tray from 12 " to 8 "width to get the velocity I needed and I made up the riffle rack incorporating the 3 classic riffle designs, 4x Z, 4 x angled and 2 @ right angle. Spent ages making it up out of stainless etc and it was amazing what it captured and worked perfectly. These days Im getting lazy and I replaced it with the dream mat to save on processing time with the massive difference in cons volume. I was pretty proud of what I made but as it is with most things these days there is always someone else one step ahead. As per your vibrator, well done.
cheers Johno
Fantastic video mate. Made me rethink a few of my processes
Cheers Ben...yep it get's the old Cogs going that's for sure. Regards John
Thanks for this. I have the problem of the same gold.
Job done well sir, something I've always felt was the biggest loss is all the fine gold. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Very welcome mate. Regards Aussie
We know that we are missing gold, but don't want to admit it to others or worse ourselves. I know that we lose super fine gold in the silty water. Do you feel that the vibration is dropping this float gold? Your other principles of slowing the water and sluice angle are spot on . Years ago we put a small vibrator run off our air supply on my dredge as advised by an old timer who was willing to share his experiences like you are doing. Well done and thanks for sharing!
@@arcticminer32 I've had my own thoughts and theories about how to catch the ultra fine gold particles. One of them is to use alfalfa that has been charged with electrical static and shoved into a laundry bag that has holes everywhere more like a fish net. And as the water passes through this bag particles of metals will be attracted to it. Another one is to have a sluice that gets really wide so it slows down near the bottom of the sluice box. The wider it gets the slower it will become and hopefully allowing the ultra fine gold to drop out and stay in a sluice box. Things I have never tried since coming up with them from other miners knowledge and experience..
Great vid mate. Something to do on a rainy day. Looks like its worth saving tailings
It sure is. Cheers. Regards Aussie
Great vid always a pleasure to watch👍
Cheers Mate. Regards Aussie
Great information, much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful! Regards Aussie
Yes, yes yes I've been working on a vibration project also mines just a little different it just makes sense to capture as much fine gold b4 it is blown out the end of the sluice it takes a little more effort and patience but much more profiencent great video 👍💖😎✨🏞️🇺🇸
Correct...small gold is far more prolific than big gold and it's amazing how it adds up. Cheers. Regards Aussie
Excellent video and a great modification!
Thank you very much mate. Regards Aussie
Wow ! ,im over recycling my tailings through the sluice and panning again and again for this best results. Where i fossick has flour gold just like your dirt no flakes. Thanks for sharing. Bloody champion mate. All the best.
Glad to help out mate. Regards Aussie
I like that synth intro.
Excellent
Miss your videos mate, hope you're well
Just the video I need to watch, last night I was dealing with some powdered gold and was having a horrific time trying to capture it.
Glad to help out mate. Good timing I guess. Regards Aussie
Good job!
21 years I have been a CFA volunteer here in VIC,we all need time to make ourselves right mate...
Really good system that. I will try and incorporate this into the recovery circuit on my Rod Mill along with a fluid bed pulse jig.
Cheers mate. Let me know how it goes. Regards Aussie
I always knew concrete vibrators would be instrumental with gold prospecting/mining back when I saw one in action in construction. :) You should try to rig up a metal rod to stick into a bucket of concentrates with water in it...and then vibrate for 5 minutes and see if it drops all the gold to the bottom of the bucket (or smaller container like gallon milk jug or transparent container that size like quart jar)
Very Nice
And much more gold.
Thank you Ausie bloke for the beautiful training. Can you please tell us the brand, power rating, and hp of the vibrator motor that you are using so i can setup exactly tge same sluice as you have done. Thank you.
I would have to say 99+ % recovery.
Good job matey. And the best part is it's not expensive modification. 👍👍👍
Thanks mate. and yes cheap and very effective. Regards Aussie
Great job man, I had thought about something similar to this a few years ago but I haven’t done it yet.
Thanks mate. Never too late to give it a crack. All the best. Regards Aussie
Thinking out side the box..
Well done Mate..
Hope you and your family are doing well .
Cheers Famo59 👍🍻🤓⛏
Thanks Tony. We are doing well... hope you and yours are doing the same. Regards John
..good one, stay safe...
Oh, P.S. Sir, I subscribed to your channel and liked the video for you. Keep the Gold videos coming. Liking them alot!!! Someday, I would love to goldmine in Australia. It's so full of the stuff and New Zealand too. Take-Care....Mike.
That is what I am finding. Thank you.
Love yoir idea. Im going to try that. I think it will also work good in s clean yo sluice. And on a miller table
Super fabbo mate ..always a treat ..😍
Glad you enjoyed it mate. Regards Aussie
That is some seriously fine gold😍 Nice work👍🏻⛏🏴
Isn't it just. Cheers mate. Regards Aussie
@@AussieBlokeProspector Just subscribed👍🏻
Pretty clever idea using the weight of gold itself, coupled with vibration, to winnow out all you can. Reminds me of the sonic cleaner principle.
Thanks mate. I guess it is really when you consider the frequency of vibration. Regards Aussie
Love it works good job thanks john
Cheers Ray
Need to try a setup like that for the gold in my area. Only thing I've found that works on it is to collect by panning and smelting the cons. Nice job dude!!!!
Let me know how it goes. Regards Aussie
Absolutely brilliant ! Just ordered my vibrator on ebay. $19.95 AUD and free postage. Great work.
Lol..sounds funny... Cheers for the thumbs up. Regards Aussie
Way Beyond Excellence, Shalom ! !
Thank you kindly. Regards Aussie
Thanks for the awesome content
My pleasure mate and cheers. Regards Aussie
Super cool idea!
some thoughts I had. So if you want more vibration you should try to isolate the sluice from the wood frame with some rubber or other soft material. That will allow the box to move a little more. Also the vibration is getting in the tub your apparatus is sitting on. So it's getting into the tailings bucket so the gold may all settle to the bottom of the bucket.
Thanks for the tips! Definitely worth considering. BTW...I did check the buckets..and they were gold free...just didn't show that. Regards Aussie
Absolutely spot on. Use rubber mounts to attach the sluice to the bath and you'll get much more vibration where you want it. It'll be heaps quieter you could possibly turn the vibrator down a notch or use a smaller 12V one.
For me the vibration worked so well that my water was jumping up in the air. I had to add a speed controller on the vibrator.
Great installation :) Good job !
Thanks mate. Regards Aussie
Very Nice Brother I'm gonna have to go one more step with this Thanks 😎👍💯
Cheers mate. Go for it... I'd like to hear how that goes. Regards Aussie
