That's exactly it. Jiren's backstory isn't so basic that it takes away from his badassery or lessens the awesome stuff he does on screen, but it's not a backstory that was _worthy_ for a character like him. The mortal who had surpassed Gods of Destruction on his own merit, without any angelic tricks or transformations. It NEEDED to be so much better.
Maybe his backstory could’ve been that someone challenged him to a fight, and his lost, so his penalty was his planet was destroyed, so he learned that power is everything so that’s why he’s so strong, sounds more of a hero’s back story.
To be honest jiren was lowkey staying up there with mastered ui goku and talking about basic alien bro what alien have u seen that looks like him and we honestly dont know if jiren is the strongest mortal just for the fact that 4 other universes were exempt from the top cause they were to strong so we could of seen other people stronger then jiren and mastered ui goku and personally jiren is one of my favorite characters in the db series in my opinion

I know I’m late commenting this, but in the manga Jiren actually overwhelms and beats MUI Goku, it’s just it wore him out to the point where he was in a weakened state. Also Vegeta was still around so it was a 4v1 and he still knocks out Vegeta and goku and frieza beat him with a ringout still.
