Their purpose is not high speed flight so aerodynamics isn't necessarily helpful.

That net winged beetle faceplanting in slow motion is one of the funniest and simultaneously cutest things I've seen in a long time
I think what makes bugs unnerving for a lot of people (aside from their more alien looks obviously) is that they’re usually so quick. But seeing them function at a slower motion like this makes them a lot more understandable and a lot more like many of the usual animals we know
Hope Pixar animators are watching this. The weevil's sequential procedure and a tripod stance prior to flight is a comedy waiting to be explored :D
Also, thank you for your efforts to share the what is mostly invisible world to humans and showing its beauty and drama (any one for landing face first? ;op)
I can imagine one of the carrion beetles buzzing, then turning back and saying "One of you's gotta get off."

I assure you, my immediate response to seeing a praying mantis is looking at it or trying to pick it up gently, they are such beautiful and funky insects.
The beetles are definitely some of my favorite take-offs. I just love how their wings unfold like the blade of a pocket knife.

Yeah, I love watching diptera flights. Perhaps tipulidae would make a great choice to showcase their flight.

As a macro photographer, it's amazing to see such small things and see how complex and beautiful they are. These videos help show that that and hopefully people respect insects just a little more when they see how highly sophisticated they are. Great work!

@@braunarsch right?! that's exactly what i thought, particuarly with weevils because the elytra tucks in the wings in a shell-like structure, when it opens it looks mechanical and so fascinating, like a carefully, delicately concocted robot/toy of some kind

Weevils do this as they often take off from sticky surfaces (plant sap). This reduces stiction. You try jumping when you're standing on a sticky mat;)

These are all absolutely spectacular! You do such an amazing job capturing these flights. It's one of those super fascinating aspects of life that hardly anyone else bothers to film and post. I find myself marveling even at insects considered pests and a nuisance! I can safely say I was unreasonably excited when I saw your new flight video appear on my feed!

I had no idea that mantids could fly! I'm also amazed by how beautiful the wings are of the insects in this video. Even while some of the critters are pretty weird looking themselves.

As someone who wants to research Insect flight and has been reading research papers on their maneuvers, your videos connect that theoretical rigor to the practical movement of insects. Amazing stuff. :-)
As a myrmecologist your channel name attracted me for obvious reasons. . . But I gotta say, your enthusiasm for pumping out content of entomological tastes rather than just purely ants has allowed me to learn a few things. For instance using a blacklight to study elates movement patterns during nuptial flights of species I haven't bred via formicariums is magnificent. So thank you and keep up the good work :D
As interesting as it is to watch these insects take off and fly, I would love to know how they see the world. The eyes on these insects are all different in shape, size, and color. I came across your videos by accident about a month ago and have been hooked ever since. I've shared your videos with several friends who also find them as interesting as I do.... Thanks!
Mantises have very good vision and can see you from a few meters away, they also have great 3d depth perception and 360* vision
5:31 One more thing, really cool seeing all of the hitchhiking mites. But also wanted to say that this beatle has really neat antennae. They remind me of moths antennae and are probably used in a similar fashion, as in they're used for increased sense of smell.

@@leociresi4292 weirdly unrelated to the comment but I should add that they actually aren't, you can see the thorax segment starts just in front of the wings and the forelimbs are halfway on the thorax
Absolutely - just like moths you can usually tell a beetle's sex by the size of their antennae structures, as males have more complex/larger antennae for locating females for mating.
I’m not studying or animating insects or anything like that, I’m just here because I think the bugs look cute when they take off :’)
Beetles especially, even the methodical weevles are clumsy fliers compared to flies and such
I work at a nursery, and have been lucky enough to witness three different mantis egg cases hatch.. absolutely wondrous. Only this month, did I finally witness a mantis flying. We usually watch them on our plants devouring other insects. Seeing the mantis in flight was all too brief, but astonishing. I feel sure these creatures helped create the idea of fairies. Thanks for this wonderful video!
Stuff like this makes me appreciate how amazing Earth is across all spectrums of life, and it's sad we've forever disrupted it in a short couple of centuries.

I have always loved flying creatures, but i never knew how much i loved flying insects untill i found this channel
I always send these videos to friends who are afraid of bugs. I think seeing this calm and non-dramatized footage of them can really help demystify insects and help them be seen as any other animal by understanding how they work when they're normally too small and fast to really comprehend.
The mantis is so graceful and controlled in it's take off and flight. I've always wanted to see what they look like when they are flying, because they can be such a large insects, depending on the species. And Wow, you did such a great job filming these insects. it's always so fascinating watching all their take offs, with all of their varying weights, balances and designs. And because of that, they all seem to have their own fascinating, signature way of getting off the ground. And to see it in slow motion, gives the viewer a sense of the insects weight and the gravity and different forces working against it. It's all so interesting! So thank you so much for sharing your hobby with us, you are doing a great service for science.

Bee flies are the quickest flying insect I've ever come across. They're nearly impossible to swat, but I'll never swat them again since I now know they can save my house from carpenter bees.

Yup, and they're really calm too. They don't seem to be too frightening of anything. They'll just climb up on your hand and stare at you. What's not to love.

The brilliant dialogue/explanation brings these miracles to life. Small details beautifully explained ... like the hitchhiking mites clinging to the beetle's wings or the thorax indirectly powering the wings of the tiger bee fly.

Trust the hoverfly 2 look quite competent in takeoff.
The carrion beetle not only has very efficient-looking antennae, it doesn't flap it's elytra like the other beetles do. It also has nice big eyes, giving it at least an alert appearance; I am now a carrion beetle fan. 💜

One thing I couldn't help but find fascinating from this is that every time there is an insect with a shell cover, you can see the proper wings actually unfold themselves like some kind of DaVinci flying contraption.

I'm a huge fan of nature documentaries in general and although these flight videos are very specific I find them just as interesting and entertaining as learning about an ecosystem
It's very cool seeing the beating of the single winged bugs and how the flapping movement almost looks exactly like birds. I wonder if people will be able to make something based off of this and soon we have people achieving single person flight.
