    The main problem with most braids is wind knots though... would like to see a test on that, most of the advice is anecdotal... (I know you mentioned this limitation but I reckon we can come up with a way).

    @jordannaumov 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Hey Drew. Another awesome video! I think you should definitely do round two, but share more of the data on each of the braids. You should make a comparison chart so people can compare the best abrasion resistance vs the braid diameter/PE rating, strand count and price. This will also seperate thicker/lower strand braids to more finesse/higher strand braids. Would also love to see some cheap vs high-end braids tested like: Verivas, Diawa Saltiga and Toray. Either way, keep it up man!

    Dont take the breaking strain or thickness of any berkley line for a bar of soap 🤦‍♂️ this 9x braid might be a different story but it doesn’t take a scientist to figure out that it isnt what it says it is. Really good video and very interesting results. I would love to see you test out some of the higher quality braids like varivas and tas line and see how they hold up. But another thing to keep in mind that most soft supple smooth braids are excellent for casting and using lures but SUCK for abrasion resistants. But a thicker stiffer wirey braid will hold much better but is absolute garbage for casting compared to a softer braid.

    @mattgorringe2959 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Thx Drew. Been using Suffix 832 for light tackle bream 6-10lb for years, it needs wearing in though, the coating makes it a bit stiff at first on small threadlines on the first session but is fantastic for limpness and general behaviour after that. Would love to know if the abrasion resistance of the lines remains the same after a few sessions in use as I reckon the coatings change.

      Really? I used to believe Power Pro was one of the best lines to fish off the rocks because of its abrasion resistance. This also stopped me from trying the new high end PE Japanese lines such as YGK and so on. But I'm definitely having a look at the 832. Cheers.

  • @fishingwithlee9519
    @fishingwithlee9519 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excuse me my friend but your test doesn't make sense. Because you cannot test how strong a cord is by looking at how often you can twist it. This shows rather how bad a line is because we fish with a braided line because we don't want the line to stretch. So a cord can travel after 5 turns but carry 15 kilos while another cord can be turned 20 times but breaks at 3 kilos.

    Thanks for doin this mate. 0.20mm kairiki is rated 17.1kg in europe while j braid grand 0.23mm PE#2.5 is rated 19.5kg, this might explain why kairiki is thinner. Thickness has a big effect on abrasion resistance. Man, that fins 20lb line is really thick, around PE#3.5 by my estimate, thicker than they claim, so no shock about that result. One thing you can do is weigh a length of line to find out weight per metre (or whatever unit you prefer), that will give you an idea of how much material is in each line.

    so the "by far the thickest" has the most break strength/resistance. HUH well I'm shocked. might as well compare 25 or 30lb of one vs the '20lb' fins.
    my point being .254 IS the 30lb size of many lines - Fins is labeled 20 So that would be one of the worst lines.

    Thanks for doing the tests. Only problem is that the line diameters stated on the box bear no semblance to reality. Neither do the breaking strains, quite often. American manufacturers especially completely understate the breaking strains (our 4 pound braid breaks at 10 pounds!) and diameters. Berkley X9 even has the gall to print separate specs for US, EU and Japan on the same box, all of which show different breaking strains and diameters for the exact same spool! Go figure

    Fly in the ointment. Sufix USA (Rapala) rate the braid different to Sufix EU, e.g. 20lb in EU is 0.15mm and in US is 0.23mm. Why? Because the US does a mono size equivalent rather than the actual breaking strain, whereas the EU uses real world expected breaking strain. What that means though is Sufix 20lb US rated (0.23mm) is more like 40lb real world breaking strain. Of course this ignore knots reducing breaking strength. It may explain slightly why the Shimano braid is so thin for it's rating (ie. true breaking strain). I find it funny how marketing in the US assumes the consumer is stupid and can't grasp the less can be more idea.

    Just like advertised breaking strenghts of braids, advertised braid diamerters are notoriously unreliable. You therefore need to measure each braid diameter, then conduct an abrasion test on each, then plot the results of braid dia v abrasion results.
