    Hi there. I have watched a bunch of your videos. Can you make a video worth the existing house 45' long by 25' deep gable roof and adding an addition that comes front of the house by 4 feet and has gable roof going west to east and is 20' wide and 40' back. Like a odd shaped T.

    I really appreciate how you took the time to show in detail how to attach an addition! I am about to start a project where my deck is in an ell of the back of my house and I want to put a roof over the deck. So I am not only attaching to the slope of one roof, I have 2 slopes to contend with! I’m having trouble figuring out how to attach it dealing with the valley of the two slopes of the existing roof. Can you help me figure out how to cut these new rafters?

    What if I want to add an extension along that entire side of the house? Not just a small portion which will have a lower roof height than the original. I imagine it would mean a taller roof height. Would I need to redo my existing roof?

I would like come off it and make a sloped roof in the same way. I'm just wondering how far would I go up on my roof then bring it down and run 4 posts and a header going across? How can you tie in a roof for a complete backside addition? Current house is 2 floor plus basement. 48 ft wide by 36 deep. Addition would be one story plus basement off backside of house. 48 ft wide by 24 ft deep off current house. Having trouble conceptualizing how to tie in the roof

  • @nothingc
    @nothingc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Per the video, the triangle roof framing portion of the new addition will come in contact with the existing roof. Will any part of the existing main house's roof being disturbed to make connections to the new addition's roof or the new roof simply sits on the existing one and then we apply shingles?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm assuming that you're asking if the weight of the new roof will affect the wood framing on the existing roof and in some cases you will need to contact the structural engineer to answer that question. Some existing roofs will require additional bracing and structural support, while others won't.

    great video. Does it matter if the existing structure is a vaulted/cathedral roof?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would all depend upon the size of the project and since I cannot provide you a structural engineering information, probably won't be able to help answer your question. It really would depend upon how much weight you're adding to the top of the existing roof rafters.

  • @stevenr21

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would all depend upon the size of the existing and new roof, but for the most part you are correct. If you're suggesting that the weight from the new roof can be transferred to the new footings, instead of the existing ones.

    Greg I find your videos very didactic. I had seen a lot of them looking for one that cover my particular case.
    My house roof is just 2.5/12 trusses gable roof. Before we purchase the house somebody extended the roof line to add a family room at the center , following the same roof angle. They ended with the roof too low (7’). The house is facing west, so the addition was made toward the East. Later they built an extra bedroom at the North empty corner, to which the installed a flat roof instead of the Gable or Hip roof. That left me the back door to the South empty corner with no roof, slap or anything.
    We want to create a Gable roof for that area but I see difficult how to connect to the to the family room roof.
    The house span is 28’. Family room added next to the empty area extended roof tor 12’, the area to work is 26’x12’ .
    I hav had some ideas, but I rather listen you advice.
    Thanks.
    Javier

    Great video. If there is a fireplace on one side(bottom of gable?) how do you deal with that? Do you proceed like you did but pop a hole in the new roof for the fireplace?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, the fascia board will need to be cut and the roofing repaired to install a new fireplace, but I think you figured it out. If you're going to put the chimney anywhere else inside the roof, then the framing will need to be modified before the opening can be cut out.

    Thanks for your videos, you are the best. my question is this: can you do such addition to a manufactured home? Thanks

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be difficult to answer your question without understanding how the modular home was constructed. If the modular home was constructed similar to the video, then I would say yes. My biggest concern would be whether or not the modular home and its roof could support the weight of the new room addition roof.

    I’m adding a enclosed patio to a manufacturer home with vaulted ceilings, does that add any significant problems?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not as long as it isn't going to be creating any structural load bearing problems for the mobile home. For example if you're going to attach the patio to the mobile home to where the weight would be transferred from the patio to the mobile home roof or walls, then that could create a problem.

    What would be the technical name for an addition like that in the video, however with the width of the addition equal to the width of the roof it is attaching to such that the house sides are “flush” with the addition sides?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This would be considered a single story gable roof addition with fill over the existing house. The terminology might be different parts of the world.

    I am currently building a Home extension. I am having trouble understanding how to add a roof at a slightly different pitch to an existing gable roof! Gable roof is 25 degrees and the new “L” is 24 degrees. Can the valley rafters still run at 45 degrees? Not sure how this works?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I understand what you're talking about and unfortunately I don't have a video made for it yet, but put it on my list in the future. The valley rafters won't run at a 45° angle, but should be close to it and all of the fill rafter angle cuts can be modified slightly to make everything work out just fine. I don't know if that helped, but feel free to send me some pictures of your project if it didn't. You can find our email address at the website.

    great video thank you, I'm in the processes of designing an addition similar to this (16' x 26' )but I cant decide ether to have the addition flush with the side of the house or move it in the 27 inches so that the two over hangs (back of the house and addition) meet up. which one would look better as a design and witch one would be easier to construct ? , the house in on a slab and the addition will be in the back on the same side as the start of your video.

    Hi, great video!! I have a small rancher and was thinking about adding on but want to go wider than the existing gable end which is 28 feet. How would I match the pitch of the roof thinking about 30 to 35 feet wide and don't really want to sacrifice too much pitch. existing pitch I believe between a 51/2 to 7

      @gregvancom  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you telling me that you have an existing home that is 28 feet wide and you want to add an addition onto the gable end that's going to let's say come out 16 feet but be 30 to 35 foot wide. If not feel free to send me a drawing or some type of a picture with a floor plan.

    • @davidwooten3430
      @davidwooten3430 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That really can't be specified since there are variables to every job like sq ft and type of room. Labor is likely to double the cost unless you're good at construction. I will be doing a sun room here in Texas and just economy windows and doors will cost 3000 or more before installing.

    Hi Greg, curious if you could explain if its possible to add an extension on a home that was L shaped and you wanted the extension to fill up in between and thus have to attach in to both roof's lines. In the L shape they are going two different directions.

    What would be the difference if the roof was framed using trusses instead of rafters?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know what differences you would be referring to, but home builders usually use roof trusses to save money on materials and labor. However, it might benefit the contractor on smaller projects to use roof rafters instead. In other words, I would probably use roof rafters on smaller projects and trusses on larger ones.

    Would you want a the addition to have its own wall at the point that it connects to the old house? I am planning an addition similar to this and I don't know if I should hang drywall directly to the exterior wall of the old house or frame a forth wall in the addition. My concern would be that the two separate slabs might move differently and cause constant drywall cracking. Your video only shows 3 walls on the addition.

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really would depend upon the type of design, but most room additions connect to the existing house and the exterior wall. However, some of them can use supporting beams to remove most of the wall or all of the wall. These videos might have more information you're looking for.

      If you're referring to a home addition or an extension to a home or other buildings than yes, but I don't know if you would if you're referring to a mobile home, because they're usually controlled by the Department of Motor Vehicles if I'm right.
