  • In this episode we take you thru building a Post Frame porch start to finish, RR Building style. I am not going to say we invented this style...but I had never personally seen it done this way before we did it. Like I say in the video, I am not an engineer, nor is this porch design engineered, but our porches are rock solid when we construct them.

I read the entire Ryan's th-cam.com/users/postUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 Plans and was able to make a shed plan. Using Ryan's Shed Plans alone, the shed itself is great. Where I wish I knew more is with respect to ground preparation and foundations. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Ryan's Shed Plans.

I've heard people argue that all the prep, math and layout is a waste of time but they don't get to reap the reward of finishing the build that is square and exactly what it needs to be. Too many times I have had to help cut custom pieces for every sheet because the person in charge didn't want to take the time to layout properly. Its delayed vs instant gratification and I think in the end your way is faster and produces a better product.

that's amazing! I never would have thought 42 years ago that they would make a circular saw that could cut through four 2x's at one time! Any time dad and I cut big cedar beams, we would do our best to line up the cuts when we would flip a beam to cut through the other half! You could always tell when you done it that you had to make a second cut; it was never perfect.

A couple of questions: 1: Why not do a ledger board at the house for the rafters to frame into? Maybe overkill but would be easier to frame (for me a least). 2) why a 2x12 rafter for such a small span? (A 2x6 would work) #3: the porch roof is too close to the higher roof - looks awkward and how in the world did you attach the sheathing and roofing under the higher roof? Enjoy your videos and appreciate your level to detail.

I am concrete on floating slab @ 20+" above grade (the house was set 5 ft above grade and back-filled 3 ft - due to a high water table). There is no basement. One quote person told me that I will get leaks and rot if I don't put my porch level 2" above grade (ugly patio). It's all concrete below 16-18". I just want a porch slightly below my sill that could've been installed in the first place. I think that if drainage is proper, there should not be a problem.

For light structures such as your porch uplift forces due to wind often will control the design so your column bases and the anchoring to the concrete is important.
