I've started creating a material function that just holds and labels all my CPD values. I don't need to worry about remembering numbers and can reorder things as needed, updating every material that needs it.
Why must the value default to 0? We cant even change that in a material instance. So everything using the material will be black until manually changed. Is there any solution to this?
Its a bit of a workaround but you could just plase and Add node and put the custom data into the A slot - then plug that into your graph. It will change the default to 1 at least. Better than having everything black.
Finally understanding how material instances work goes brrr
