  • Alexis Conran explores gambling addiction, an affliction that ruined his estranged father, and seeks to understand how and why this compulsion destroys people's lives.
The Real Hustle is a British television series created by Objective Productions for BBC Three. The show demonstrates confidence and magic tricks, distraction scams and proposition bets performed on members of the public by Conran and Wilson with "sexy swindler" Jessica-Jane Clement. From series 10, entitled "New Recruits", Jazz Lintott and Polly Parsons joined the hustlers.
Several episodes of the series state that all marks have been genuinely hoodwinked, and that any money lost is returned to them after filming. The BBC's website states that "The marks featured in the show have no idea they are being scammed. They have either been set up by friends and family or think they are taking part in a different TV show."
Following the conclusion of series 11, presenter Alexis Conran tweeted that there were "no plans for season 12".
The show began as a spin-off of the BBC show Hustle, owing to the original show's popularity. However, the series is now considered completely separate and the relationship between the shows is rarely mentioned. The Real Hustle is a factual entertainment series produced by Objective Productions for BBC Three. It features a team of hustlers - Alexis Conran, Paul Wilson and Jessica-Jane Clement - as they try out some notorious scams on members of the public, filmed with hidden cameras. The aim is to reveal how scams work so that the viewer can avoid being ripped off by the same con. The participants featured in The Real Hustle are claimed to have been either set up by their family and friends or believe that they are participating in another television programme. After they have been "hustled for real" any money or property taken during the hustle are returned to them and their consent for the item to be broadcast is obtained.
    Examples of scams
A deposit is taken on a car multiple times from different people who turn up to buy it.
A computer keyboard is replaced with one containing a key logger and bank details are obtained
A skimmer device is placed on a cashpoint with a pinhole camera inside it, recording the information on the user's cards magnetic strip along with their PIN; the data is then put on the magnetic strip of an e-top up card which is used to withdraw money from the victim's account
The black money scam at a market stall
A fake hollow cash point is installed on a busy street, in which one of the hustlers hides and records the information on the user's cards magnetic strip along with their PIN obtained from the user typing on the keypad.
In Series 8, for the first time in the show's history, a mark was not fooled by the initial scam. The scam was not pulled by the usual hustlers, but by model Caprice Bourret in a section that features celebrities performing the scams. The scam was to switch genuine twenty-pound notes with fake ones, and then exchange those fake ones for genuine tens with a shop assistant. When Caprice asked for tens and fives, the shop assistant spotted the partly hidden genuine twenties and recognized that the others were fake, so she refused to exchange them. Presenter Jess, who was nearby should anything go wrong, rushed out of the shop to alert Alex and Paul, who quickly came into the shop and confiscated the money by pretending to be police officers.

As a gambling addict I can confirm that kicking this habit is so hard.. Been 5 years and still unable to stop! I started off at seaside arcade and it got out of control! Only gamblers can understand the struggle and being told just don't do it doesn't make you feel any better and it does not help.

Kimmi Cassidy Is very easy just ask the casino to not take you in anymore, in the nethetlands we can do that. like every time you come there they say nooe you are not allowed to enter this casino. And if you do this at all casinos in town your actually safe =)

+Kimmi Cassidy You have to understand risk... Gambling is all about math, calculated risk investments.. Once you understand that you can never beat a casino in the "long" run, maybe it will stop your addiction... So it's like this, both of us put in 50k in the middle, after playing 100 games for an hour, I take 52k and you take 48k... Thank you and goodbye.. You exponentially multiply this when you play a lot and of course, you will lose in the end no matter what... Card counters in blackjack could reverse this by betting big in a higher probability for us winning when "low bad" cards have appeared a lot of times.. But then, they found a solution to handle this and pretty much, our chance of winning is slim... FOR ALL GAMBLERS, REMEMBER THAT IT'S ALL ENTERTAINMENT NOT AN INVESTMENT

Kimmis right. I've won and lost millions in all forms of gambling. I play poker for a living and have for years and make good income, but everything I did escalated to other forms of gambling when I was caught up in being a huge degenerate and the things I've done are mind boggling, the stories I have are so sick and twisted its just sad. I've walked out of casinos with 100k+ profit in cash and I've also had days where I've lost that kind of $. There are so many little intangibles and sick twisted mind games and highs and lows and feelings and reasons why you do certain things or think certain ways and NO ONE understands it unless you actually go through it all on a deep level. Sure, most people who see gambling or know or heard stories they know that it can ruin you and crush you in so many ways, but they don't actually know what goes into it all the emotions, how it fucks you physically, mentally, emotionally. People will say differently, like they understand but they actually don't. You have to experience it all. It all comes down to CONTROL, BRM, managing and valuing $ and knowing when to be a good loser and quit and most people cant who gamble and you once you win a lot or hit certain peaks, those peaks become your GET-TO point and you always want more and anytime you lose an amount of $ a lot of people can't quit until they get exactly back to the exact amount they were at whether they are $200 short or not and the cycle continues and continues and than you lose more and more. You can make huge runs if you have the $ to gamble with, but if you have no purpose and you're doing it on an everyday basis you will end up bust always. Poker is the only form that is successful if you are good, slots are -EV, everything else is an up and down swing. You do go through variance in poker too but its different AND most people who gamble excessively they are numb to everything and the money they win or lose is just numbers, its like play $ in there mind. You can win 30k and if you've done it before, like you just don't put into perspective of what 30k can actually do in the reality of the world, most people look at it like oh 30k nice I can use this to gamble more and most people are severely addicted and glued to certain slots and games and it just takes over your life completely, you lose friends, everything else in life becomes a 5/100 excitement level where gambling is your niche and its 100/100. It's such a bad lifestyle, the highs are so high and the lows are so low. If you gamble and enjoy it do it conservatively and don't expect to win, go for the excitement have a few beers with friends and if you make a little bit be happy and if you lose a 100 or a few hundred bucks and you can afford it than that be it, but once you really get involved with it all on so many levels you'll do everything to gamble and everything escalates bigger, your mind thinks bigger, you'll even borrow and manipulate friends for $ and shit... balance your life and find other things that you can do, don't sit in a casino like a degen everyday seeing the same people with the same lonely down faces everyday, isn't a life.

I'm proud of you. I'm the daughter of a gambler. Same life as you. Only daddy left at six but was around for the grandkids till his gambling git worse. Stole from a local club ran over to state lines but eventually died. He said he was sorry in the end. He told me he was running from being molested by a family member from 3 to 9. Horrible. Yes the brain changes because to cover any kind of horror pain whether drugs gambling food hoarding the list is endless. Your dad left to protect u and your mom from himself. He didn'tean to hurt you. Believe me he loved you so much. But we are stronger than our dads because we hate the gambling but it was their escape from their horrible pain. No doubt your dad hid a horrible secret and used gambling to cover it up. Just forgive and stay strong. It would be what he wanted all his life. For you.

fascinating documentary! As somebody who completed 14 weeks in Rehab via a charity called The Gordon Moody association in the UK, I know all too well of the problems a gambling addiction can cause in every aspect of your life. Last time I gambled was 16/07/16, I started rehab 18/07/16 its no coincidence, it changed my life for the better and i write this in the hope somebody will also seek help, it is out there you just have to pick up the phone - which can be so difficult! I massively relate to how they say problem gamblers have a bigger buzz from the near misses, this was the case for me, the buzz of a near miss bet was noticeably more intense than a win. I wasn't satisfied until I Iost all my money in a way, its a very distorted way of thinking! Addiction is a mental illness i'm glad people are taking gambling addiction more seriously

I feel for you brother. My dad was a problem gambler and he died alone. He was put in potters field he had no funeral. We didn't know he died. I am his only child and i inherited his illness. Even tho i have it i am aware of it. I will always have it in me. The 20 questions that you answered i answered 19 out of 20 correct. I never got married or had any children because i was afraid that they would have this disease.

gambling is an addiction. i used to work for a sports bookie. i saw someone win $180,000 on a monday and lose it all and owe the bookie $40,000 by sunday. I've seen some sick swings. my team used to cheat at poker games and win thousands in a night. I'm not about that life anymore but dont gamble. the house always wins. the big casinos and bookies were built with the suckers money.

I can identify with Garreth's feeling about the "fix"...10 years ago, I wasn't satisfied until I got that fix...10-12 hours in the casino. From 2005-2006, I racked up $60,000 of debt because of gambling and strung that debt along for 3 years...then bit the bullet and took 5 years to pay it off...I was lucky. I never stole or failed to pay a bill because of gambling, BUT, my savings/retirement is probably $150K lighter than it should be. Now...I go once a month and that's it...I save up for the month to go...anything outside my budget I use at the casino. Finally started saving/retirement accounts...again, I was lucky.

I lost busineses over gambling, lost inheritences over gambling, held up banks over gambling. Defrauded $1000's upon $1000's over gambling, served years in the pen over the bank robberies, blew 2 marriages over gambling, on the verge of blowing another relationship with an amazing girl and still can't quit. Lost gambling friends to suicide over the huge losses they took,. The bigger the bet the bigger the rush. I quit for a few years, had manage to save up over a 100k when not gambling, but lost my dad 4 years ago and went right back to it the day after my dads death. I have no explination, perhaps my parents being huge gamblers made it this way , while other kids were reading books at school, i was studying the horse racing form as young as 6 years old . And i am actually a very nice person believe it or not lol.

I played online Roulette once, £10 funded, not a lot, just to give it a go.
      Drew red 14 CONSECUTIVE TIMES....
The odds of drawing Red out of Red or Black is 1 in 2, of 50%.
The odds of drawing Red 15 times (just for instance) is 0.0020%......
Therefore the odds of drawing it 14 times is only slightly higher.... at that point I stopped.
It's amazing whenever there's a very remote chance (say 0.2%) of you winning big, it never happens, but when there's a chance of you losing 14 times in a row (0.0020% chance - much smaller) it happens!

      Best i've had recently was I took £4,500 from a £10 bet.
The final horse to win would have won me around £11k, the final game after that was Manchester united to beat LA Galaxy at odds of 1/3, which they did, had the final horse won and I not cashed out I would have taken over £15,500 from £10.
The offer was from Betfair who are notoriously shit with cash out offers, they offered me £4,500 when in reality it should have been closer to £7k according to an online calculator.
Moments before the final race went in play I cashed out £4.5k, the horse lost easily, making it a good call.
Just recently over the last few days i've gotten incredibly unlucky, had an 11/8, 15/8 win, 6/1 and then a 14/1 just lost (came easily second but couldn't close the gap on the leader who won at 5/1).
Had that won one I'd have taken another £1.5k or so.
About 2 weeks ago I was let down by a single horse for £2,300.
2 days ago I had 2 accas, 1 let me down for £800 (and of course, stupidly it was one of the horses at the shorter price that lost, 11/8), the other acca also had 1 that let me down for £2,100, also by a shorter price horse at about 5/4.

Being a gambling addict its so hard to stop I live in Australia and there are clubs everywhere my addiction is to pokies, sportsbetting, dogs, horses, card games the biggest issue for me is I will start betting on sports and then it always ends up on the pokies
And I usually 9 times out of 10 walk out defeated it’s a miserable feeling best way to stop is by going to Gamblers Annonymous and get some support be open minded and honest.
I have had time up and my life is much simpler without it gambling is chaotic and it will make you extremely anxious and stressful and depressed best way is DO NOT placing that 1st bet

Wow! Kids can gamble with a jackpot of up to $5 in the UK, that is completely irresponsible of their government! 7:08 I personally play poker for a living in Canada, my dad has a bad gambling habit with slots machines that our family has just became aware of in the last 5 years. It's especially tough for me in the sense that my success from poker is hard to share with him regarding my day to day stories and successes, cause I feel my good fortune at the poker tables will only further inflame his want to gamble...I personally have zero desire to play any games outside of poker, the idea of putting money into a machine or table game that is only meant to take it completely turns me off, but obviously for others there is a genetic dysfunction going on somewhere along the line...best of luck to all those out there fighting these demons!

  • @l3lak318

Very sad, but missing one key point... These people could not accept a random outcome... The reason why gambling hurts so much is because of that fact... ACCEPT a random outcome. If you can't accept something, it will eat you up inside because... sense you haven't accepted what has happened (accept meaning where you stop thinking about it and are content with it) you create this lie that you begin to live. The problem, if you consider it being one, is that every machine (ESPECIALLY THE MACHINES) card game, or GAME.... have a dynamic and diverse set of outcomes. You are the one that places the emotion behind gambling, the more money it is, the more emotional you will become... depending on how much you value a dollar or 10 dollars or maybe a 100 dollars, everybody values money differently and places a different emotional value per dollar amounts, other than that, the machine is just metal and a bunch of button and lights. Gambling is 100% a psych game... you need to be smart, educated and consider each and every move you make. ALL these people lacked risk management and self control. This idea of control is another whole problem. This reason is because most games lack the controls you need to do some serious damage.
I feel the source of this problem is derived from the emotion created by the "Envy of the life of wealth". I believe that is what drives you to the machine, but if you don't know what the hell you are doing, you are screwed! Gambling is an addiction ,yes...but you are terminallly ill until you clock out. If you learn a little more about addiction, however, people do things to cope with things in their life... which can sometimes be a good thing... All and all, it boils down to mental prowless and just be smart about the decisions you make. Also understand that LIFE is a gamble filled with even more random outcomes!!! Instead of risking money, you are risking your life. You start riding your bike to work, you are accepting the random outcome that someone could actually run you over... the chance of that happening is very slim, but that outcome could happen... but the biker on the road has accepted it, if he didn't, he probably wouldnt ride his bike to work. This biker would also probably laugh at the idea of being run over, cause he is such a good biker. Like a world series bowler who accidentally droped the bowling ball and shattered his toe... anything can happen. LIFE is a gamble, the question is... what is at stake?
This documentary has helped me understand 1 thing deeply...
There is a big difference between what is defined as a Habit. A Habit being something you have control over .vs. an Addiction. Addiction being the thing that you have almost zero control of.
Amazing documentary, just adding my 2 cents, thanks for posting!

My rule is- I only gamble when I go on vacation, I never go to the local casino, I've never gone even once because one time I go that's it I'll go again. I leave my wallets and credit cards locked in my hotel room. I bring my limit in cash to gamble with, if I bring 500$, I expect the to lose it if I'm gonna gamble it. I never stay in hotels with casinos downstairs, I make sure it's a drive away. Because even a person who is not a gambling addict can get that bug. I don't do online gambling tables or slots because they're even more rigged. But, if it's a big game I'll do online game betting every now and then.

Man that "near winning" theory on @43:00 is a really tough one, as slot designers are programming such features to make certain slots even more addicting. These people should be hanged lol for doing such things that would create a new breed of addicts day by day.

This is an honest question. For those who struggle with this: If an "artificial" casino was set up where you were given chips (real chips that you'd buy for 1 cent each) and you got to play the games, play the slots, feel the rush, but not really have any money invested, would that not work? Do you need to have the danger, the risk of destroying your life for it to actually feed the habit? Honestly wondering about that part.

    • @ML-kx9gz
      @ML-kx9gz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, gamblers need to feel that sting for it to have any real meaning. Hence during the near miss segment, if you had wagered only 1c on it a near miss doesn't have anywhere near the same effect that betting $100 on it would. Watch 2 for the money, theres a scene where al pacino admits he actually prefers the sting from losing over the sting from winning.

    • @brendar9363

The reason I was wondering is because during the test with the gambler with his brain being monitored, he was still showing the "rush" from the near miss, just as if he was at a real slot machine. That surprised me for that reason....it wasn't even real.

I'm here to better understand gambling addiction as I strongly suspect...no, make that KNOW, that a friend of mine has a gambling problem AND I am here studying this for my required continuing education for my RN license...To me, it's simply another substance...another behavior to medicate us for what hurts and makes us feel good for a few moments. For myself, I turn to shopping...which causes problems to...all depend on endorphine like chemicals to get that little or big rush to make us feel like winners! Yet afterwards...it is destructive and makes us feel like shit.

hello, my name is Jan M. Joson 38 yrs old single dad to 2 lil boys. I am from NYC. i empathize with the gambling addiction. great film enjoyed it very much because my mom furiously kept me away from gambling activities surrounding my family. even the sight of friendly card games for kids was bad for my mom, as she didnt want me to learn. we all gamble and that is both fact and truth. if you dont think so, open your senses. im sorry about your dad Alexis it is indeed a tragedy. as an adult i had an experience in Vegas i chased the chances of winning therefore the machine let me win then quickly lost 200 bucks. i said fuck! im outta here. keep up the great work to help others and the world see.

Let's face it gambling is a result of having a emptiness inside of us. Some may call it a disease but it all out manipulation of peoples emotions. We feel low when we lose and have an amazing high when things are going good. That is normal to feel that way. It's hard to let go of those feelings. We all want to win, success and defeat our losses. It's not a game of chance or else the casinos would suffer equally. Does it look like the odds are against them? No, imho. They seem to do amazingly well and they will continue to do well as long as they can get you to believe your a winner, champion. The free this or that doesn't come from them winning on luck. It is rigged and you hope that your the lucky winner that day, which may not be the best thing that could happen to you. It's a lore back so that can rape you for the next customer who is now the winner. Most of the machines are chipped and able to be controlled by someone. Not fair gaming. I'm learning that if you have the urge realize they're there to make a profit off of YOU! Like a carrot dangling infront of a donkey.

I think, people define things as an addiction once you just keep doing the same thing..... Its only an addiction when it has negative results.... SO when you go to work everyday is this addicted to work....or washing your body etc.... Is it only what society has deemed good/bad addiction vs acceptation.... IDK....What if you where good at gambling and brought home and extra 1500 a week is this then an addiction,.,,,, NEVER stealing anything , bills always paid.... etc.....?

Lol, If you have been on Oxy for 10 years, you are an addict! Regardless if you can pay your bills or not. You are just trying to justify your own habit.
Try to stop taking Oxy. If you can and never resume it, then you are not an addict. If you start taking it again, you are addicted.

A subject suffering from an addiction experiences addiction-related
behavior, cravings to use a substance in the case of a drug addiction or overwhelming urges to repeat a behavior in the case of a behavioral
addiction, the inability to stop drug use or compulsive behavior in
spite of undesired consequences (e.g., negative impacts on health,
personal relationships, and finances, unemployment, or imprisonment), reward/incentive effects associated with dopamine release, and dependency, or any combination thereof. Addiction-related behavior in reference to a drug addiction includes behavior resulting from compulsive use of a drug characterized by dependency on the substance.
Symptomatic of the behavior is (i) overwhelming involvement with the use of the drug, (ii) the securing of its supply, and (iii) A HIGH PROBABILITY OF RELAPSE AFTER WITHDRAWAL

That's like someone who's addicted to drugs to "just say no", but gambling is a drug. Some can, because they are not wholly "hooked".
I have known people on other addictions, like meth, some gambling, and you wonder why they just can't "walk away" some need professional help
I knew someone who worked in the same building in another company who was broke paycheck to paycheck always borrowing 5 or 10, "til next check". He always paid, but would be right back the day after payday borrowing again. One day he didn't show, I asked his co-worker what had happened to him. Oh, you didn't hear? He won top prize on a scratch off ticket and went to collect. Whoa. Great. Next day, I saw him, congratulations! He says, hey, can I borrow 5 til payday. What?? I thought you won. He says, I did, but stopped on the casino that night and put it all back in! How much? $5000. Lol.

Aaron Holt gambling is in your head. Trying to cover pain. Write down what happened to you at age one two three etc. Something horrible happened to you. Write it down. You will see it and can start to recover. Any kind of crutch ppl use (gambling food hoarding etc drug etc) ppl use to cover a deep pain. Like I said try this and let me know what you find. Stop running from yourself. U will find your answer. When u do you can find the strength to heal. And quit gambling forever. (I was molested by my dad mom said it didn't happen so I ate and ate) now I'm happy and unfat as I finally told my dad how I felt. Before he died he finally said he was sorry. But I already forgave him
      Take care friend
