Great video! I'm a designer, I put up my first listing almost two months ago, I'm already on 6 listings and still no sales, grateful for this type of practical and down-to-earth content.
We are entering Etsy's slowest season, so don't be too hard on yourself. Be sure to focus on ANY growth, even if that growth is just "more views". All little steps are steps forward!
i wont be cool, i will be directand harsh: DUDE, 6 listings in two months? as soon as i have my bank account linked to etsy i will start making HUNDREDS of listings, probably 20-30 a DAY with digital and physical products, aiming to have as minimum 3K by end of year. If you arrived here, you should keep digging until reaching the youtube channels that recomends listing lots of (of course, real) listings, not just 6 in two months. That means you uploaded 1 item each 10 days. The algorithim totally ignores you, you dont even exists for etsy.
I really needed this video. I'm selling digital downloads and I have over 50 visits and over 60 views, but no sales. Definitely going to use this video as a guide. Thank you 😊
As usual, such a great video. I really appreciate the step by step process. It takes so much of the guess work out of working this business. Etsy (or any other business) requires a great deal of invested time for learning and also for experimentation to see what works for your products. Anyone who is getting rich quick with their own designs is lucky. Most people are putting in the hours. Thanks for what you do!
Absolutely! Overnight success should not be a realistic expectation for any business, and those who make it seem like the norm might as well be advertising that everyone who plays the lottery is destined to win. Running a successful Etsy shop takes a lot of work and every industry, product, and even the season can impact the likelihood of an item gaining traction. The strategy I teach in this video is the strategy I've used as someone who has run multiple Etsy shops over 12 years - but it's not THE strategy. It's "a strategy". 🙂 There are lots of different ways to make a grilled cheese. This just happens to be the method that works best for me, as someone who likes the scientific side of selling.

Thank you for your helpful videos! My question: When you said stay away from ideas that have less than 1,000 monthly searches, are you talking about "root terms" or the niched-down ideas?
All listings can be revived. I only recommend making a new listing if you've accumulated several bad reviews of a singular listing, since this will negatively impact its quality score.
Interesting - I do it if it never gets a view as not got any traction. The other problem ones are the ones which did well then suddenly stop. @@StarlaMoore
There's absolutely no evidence to support that a fresh listing will perform better than a listing with history. Especially for those listings that have made sales in the past. Those listings have past listing quality scores and positive history, so by starting over, you're basically wiping all of that positive history away. It's better to make improvements to existing listings.
Shops with bad pictures only inside 6 listing selling like hell. We make over 100 listing and amazing pictures but cant sell like them. Making more listing many etsy gurus say but its an urban legend i guess. What do you think about that
Starla, thank you for the video, it is very informative! I have several listings that used to sell well and had good reviews three years ago but I had to deactivate them due to various reasons. Now I can produce them again. What is better for your opinion, revive these listings with new titles, photos and tags or create new ones? Thank you.
If the item is the same and the previous listings had good reviews, I would reactivate the previous listings so that it will have some listing quality score behind it.
I’ve heard you say before it’s good to wait a few months when opening a new store for Etsy to recognize you. How long after the first 90 days should I start being concerned from lack of traffic/no sales?
It's best to give listings a period of 60 to 90 days before you begin tweaking your tags and titles, specifically. When you list a new item on Etsy, Etsy gives that listing a slight boost in search in order to observe how shoppers interact with the listing. During this time, Etsy moves this listing around, showing it to different types of people. Sales and positive reviews during this time can help to boost your listing quality score, which can help to improve it's rank because this shows Etsy that people are interested in the item. For that first 60 to 90ish days, it's best to leave the tags and titles of new listings alone so that you aren't interrupting this assessment process by constantly updating the keywords you want to be known for.
Ho Starla, thanks a lot for sharing this valuable information 😊 I have a question related to low sales in connection to organic traffic and ads. I checked several times and I see that every time I stop my 1$ advertisement (which doesn’t bring a lot of traffic anyway) my organic traffic drops down also - till zero. So in order to get my organic traffic back, I have to start ads again 😢 Did you hear about this problem before and how I can solve this issue? Thanks a lot for your answer in advance and sorry for mistakes, I am not native in English 😅
Hey Starla! I love the videos and thank you for wonderful ideas sharing with us. I wonder, I'm new Etsy seller, some of my products are favourite from customers but I don't have a sales. Also, I run a discounts. I'd be happy to hear your suggestions. Thanks.
There's unfortunately no way for me to give tips without a more in-depth analysis of your brand. My suggestion would be to begin exploring some of the topics discussed in this video, then spend a bit of time deep-diving into those topics. I have 100s of videos that cover nearly every area of growing your Etsy shop on my channel. 🙂
Do you know if Etsy's "Gift Mode" is going to change the algorithm in any way? Or if Etsy plans on making any changes to the algorithm at all in 2024? Love your videos btw!!
As of right now, no. Because gift mode is it's own "section" of Etsy. It doesn't have any impact on the general marketplace's search algorithm because these things aren't really connected.
Question , I have quite a few older listings that I want to spruce up and update SEO, titles and keywords. Is it better to change only a few or a bunch at the same time? If feel like if I do a few it will take forever instead of one day fixing a bunch. Of course I am first going to do the keyword research prior.
I'm always a fan if making slow changes. If something were to go wrong when making bulk changes, you'll have no way to mediate the situation. Tanking one listing is better than tanking a ton of listings at the same time, so I always recommend taking things slow.
Hey Starla, Another great video thank you! 2 Quick questions, is it possible to revive an old neglected Etsy shop? (I've been fixing old listings and adding new listings for 6 months and less than 20 views a day). And 2, how do you feel about Dylan Jauhrus's method of running 24 hour sales constantly? Thank you in advance 🙏
Yes, it is possible to revive an old shop. Actually, it's better to revive an old shop than to start a new one as many new shops seem to be suspended at least for a time when first beginning. As for running sales constantly, that has never been a practice that I recommend because it devalues your products and your shops, and customer come to expect the sale prices.
Starla great info as always. Quick question... for the 1,000ish search volume would that be for the general item (coaster) or do we need to be looking for that in our niche area?
Start with the general keyword. If no one is searching for that most base level term, it's very likely that the searches aren't going to get better by niching it down. You can always check to see if the search volumes increase for your specific niche item. But, for example, if no one is searching for "blanket", it's unlikely that anyone is searching for "chunky knit blanket". So when I say to stick to ideas with at least 1000 monthly searches before developing products, this is specifically for gauging interest in the type of item. When doing SEO specifically, you'll want to target more specific niche terms.
Wondering about the SERP tool---do we find the highest price for our item even if it's outrageous and go for top 10% or do we want to look at the price point at which the MOST items in our category our selling and set within that top 10%?
Nope! Photos have zero impact on rank/Etsy's algorithm. Tags and titles are what you won't want to touch. Descriptions have a very small impact, but not much.
Nothing is selling or getting visibility. My erank is also not showing me long tail keywords anymore 😢 I have an erank subscription and can’t figure out why long tails aren’t showing. So I don’t know if I’m using long tails or not.
A longtail keyword is ANY descriptive term that indicates a very specific item, made up of more than one word. So you don't need eRank to tell you what is a longtail keyword and what isn't. For example, "mug" is not a longtail keyword. "Orange tabby cat mug" IS a longtail keyword because it points to a very specific type of item.
Is there a ratio between # of searches, or # clicks to Etsy competition that we can use as a rule of thumb to decide if the demand is high enough to compete in a particular niche/product?. If anyone has any idea how to go about this I can use a helping hand. Thanks.
Unfortunately there isn't. Every seller will have different experiences/challenges when ranking in search. For example, a shop that has a lot of sales will have higher listing quality scores and higher customer and marketplace experience scores, making it easier for this seller to rank in search for new listings. For this seller, they'll have an easier time ranking in search for highly competitive keywords because they already have a bit of marketplace authority. For a new seller with no sales, competition is something this seller would need to be mindful of because they do not already have authority in the marketplace and Etsy isn't likely to rank this seller high in search right from the start. I have a great live webinar where I cover this topic a bit more in depth: th-cam.com/users/livebF78q7d_PhY?si=wUHJChiJ8nxYrL8K When it comes to Etsy, every single seller will have different experiences based on their own personal track records on the platform. So there's sadly no-size-fits-all ratio or formula that can universally reflect all sellers.
Question, if I have visits of one product from marketing and SEO, it that means that my listing is optimize right? So I shouldn't change it, Am I right?
@@StarlaMoore yes but if it search in Google means that SEO is ok right? Regarding Etsy search if I have results, better don't touch them right? Thanks for your time teacher
Views from Google just mean that the listing was well optimized for google. But it isn't necessarily an indicator of success if the listing never sells. I would focus primarily on listings that have no traffic. But, if the listing with Google views still gains no additional traction over the course of a few months (especially in Etsy search), I would consider re-evaluating your SEO for that listing.
For eBay? Unfortunately I can't help with eBay. I haven't sold there in years. For Etsy, I can definitely help but it's probably best to email me directly at starla@handmadealphaacademy.com because TH-cam comments tend to get lost. I get a lot of them per day.
@@StarlaMoore Sorry I was wrong, I confused eBay and Etsy because I would like to sell on these two platforms and sometimes I ask people questions about eBay and in the past about Etsy I wanted to ask you two more questions regarding keyword research + analytics for ebay 1. analytical: could you recommend some tutorials so that I can understand how to properly use the tools and data that eBay makes available to me? how to properly analyze data and make the right decisions accordingly 2. I sold one t-shirt and then noticed the item in question said 'sold out'. I'm starting to think people trying to get somewhere in life are deliberately sabotaged.
What did you have your quantity for the item set to? If it is set to 1, then once it sells, Etsy sees it as sold out. If you have it set to 2 or more, then Etsy will immediately automatically relist the item after it sells.
No, I've never offered one on one sessions, unfortunately. The price I'd have to charge at the size of my audience would just be too much. That's because you're not looking at this data correctly. 🙂 Etsy search includes ads which are every 3rd row which makes up a lot of listings, but are not factored into our organic competition because listings are not technically listings that are ranking in organic search ( ads have their own algorithm). eRank will show you exact matches and not partial, mix-and-matched, or closely related matches, whereas Etsy results include keywords that are scrambled in every possible combination throughout tags, titles, descriptions, and attributes. What we provide at eRank are average competition rates. Understanding how to use those averages is essential though, which is why we have a massive library of resources to help, including a blog, help files, 24 hour chat support, a TH-cam channel, and I also go live with Pam Duthie every single thursday to coach sellers on the eRank channel. You can join us here today: th-cam.com/video/1BF5aMMlFAQ/w-d-xo.html As I always say, "You can't use a hammer to brew a latte". In order to use a tool correctly, you have to understand that tool and how the tools should be used. Which is what we're here to help with.
That is also what I was referring to. Those competition numbers are based on specific exact match instances within Etsy search. Whereas Etsy, when showing total competition, also factors in broad matching and ads. The purpose of studying averages is to gain comparative understanding. Attempting to compare data scenarios one-for-one unfortunately isn't possible in any data scenario where 100% of the data is not supplied by Etsy. Which is why averages are statistically accurate when compared between themselves. If you need further clarification, please don't hesitate to email our support team at support@erank.com

But, if the listing with Google views still gains no additional traction over the course of a few months (especially in Etsy search), I would consider re-evaluating your SEO for that listing.
hello I am completely new to ebay, I have just sent a product catalog but I have no traffic, could I ask you some beginner questions?
For eBay? Unfortunately I can't help with eBay. I haven't sold there in years. For Etsy, I can definitely help but it's probably best to email me directly at starla@handmadealphaacademy.com because TH-cam comments tend to get lost. I get a lot of them per day.
@@StarlaMoore Sorry I was wrong, I confused eBay and Etsy because I would like to sell on these two platforms and sometimes I ask people questions about eBay and in the past about Etsy
I wanted to ask you two more questions regarding keyword research + analytics for ebay
1. analytical:
could you recommend some tutorials so that I can understand how to properly use the tools and data that eBay makes available to me?
how to properly analyze data and make the right decisions accordingly
2. Keyword Research:
Is there software that could allow me to automatically change the keywords on my ads?
Is it possible for software to do this for me automatically?
Or
do I have to do it manually for each of my ads?

@StarlaMoore I just wrote you an email I'm Chrisder
I sold one t-shirt and then noticed the item in question said 'sold out'. I'm starting to think people trying to get somewhere in life are deliberately sabotaged.
What did you have your quantity for the item set to? If it is set to 1, then once it sells, Etsy sees it as sold out. If you have it set to 2 or more, then Etsy will immediately automatically relist the item after it sells.
hello is this the only platform in the world that asks you to pay them to list a product?
No. Most platforms require listing fees. In terms of fees, Etsy's are actually the lowest.
@StarlaMoore eBay, Amazon... don't charge for me to list a product, do they?
Etsy only offers 10 free listings?
otherwise you have to find a sponsored link to have 40 free listings?
Think I saw someone else comment on one of your videos that they booked a 1-on-1 session with you. Do you still do that?
No, I've never offered one on one sessions, unfortunately. The price I'd have to charge at the size of my audience would just be too much. I do have a paid course that opens each June and December and all students have the ability to email me with questions at any time. This may have been what you'd seen. Erank? It’s information is so behind
Not true! Our data is updated every 30 days. What information, specifically, do you feel is behind?
@@StarlaMoore well if you compare the compition it doesn’t match Etsy! Not even close
As I always say, "You can't use a hammer to brew a latte". In order to use a tool correctly, you have to understand that tool and how the tools should be used. Which is what we're here to help with.
@@StarlaMoore I’m talking about you look up keywords and how many products are under that product and the accuracy isn’t right
That is also what I was referring to. Which is why averages are statistically accurate when compared between themselves.

i have an issue. There are several channels that offer tips. Even people who claim making thousands (like ALEK) . If you know so much and make so much money, why do you even bother to make vids? Editing takes lots of time, even if you pay other to make the editingm, YOU are there showing the face, having to learn/read the script. Why, why if you have the knowledge are here making vids (to any of youtubers who give etsy tips)
I am a manager at the world's largest Etsy SEO company where my job is educating sellers.
This is akin to saying, "Why be a college professor? If you're so smart, why not get a job doing what you teach?"
I am a teacher. I went to school to be a teacher. I've run multiple businesses over the years and decided to take that knowledge and combine it with what I already went to school to do. As an active Etsy seller, a professional educator, a manager at the world's leading SEO company, and as someone with experience in marketing, human psychology, and neuroscience... why the heck wouldn't I share that knowledge here? I have a community I genuinely care about here on TH-cam.
I think the real question you should be asking yourself is... why does my desire to teach bother you? I teach at colleges, at high schools, on stages, and virtually. Because I'm a teacher. And I'm daaaaaamn good at it 🫡

Great video, but how can my legitimately hand made sweaters compete in price with those purchased on ali express and resold for $14.. which erank shows as the average price on etsy?
