    Great video! First time watching Jeff's reviews. His rules overview and delivery were excellent, clear, and conveyed the main theme and game arc. Will def be watching more of his videos in the future.

    Quite an important rule error at 03:57. When your worker goes to the center spot, you can use it at your next turn! You don’t have to wait the next period/round. Rulebook page 6: «They place their agent on the central zone. This allows them to move it again on a future placement turn during this period».

    Jeff, this review completely surprised me. Mostly because of how much of your personality and impressions you were able to condense in a tightly written review.
    I genuinely care about this theme and what it was trying to do. I'm glad the mechanics are sharp although I feel that for a closer history note, John Company is a fantastic albeit completely different beast of a game.

      That's entirely up to the game group. This game takes 90 minutes or so. I saw a round of John Company last about 6 hours... This is "John Company Ultralite"... :)

    Thank you for not making a mountain out of a molehill when discussing the East India Company's exploits.

    This game is going to get review bombed by people who see East India Company and immediately think it should be blacklisted. I didn't know we should never retell history because it might be uncomfortable. I recall a wise saying that went 'those who forget history are doomed to repeat it', or something along those lines. The push to not include some of the harsher moments of history in games results in game makers simply leaving that part out. As in this case, where they add a note in the credits about it being a work of fiction and not intended to be any kind of political commentary. I'd rather see a note at the beginning of the instructions informing people of the history and why they decided not to include it in the game. That services two purposes: 1. Allow game makers to utilize more historical themes and 2. Provide a history lesson for players, vs. ignoring or changing the facts.

    This sounds like a miss for my game group. If we play an economic game we want something a bit more meaty to chew on. And the theme of the East India Company who were a corrupt greedy conglomerate of 18th century businessmen who robbed countries blind of all their resources and wealth, causing untold damage to generations of people in India? No thanks. Liked your review though.

    • @guandjs
      @guandjs ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I couldn’t agree more. As someone born in India, this theme is definitely not for me! Fortunately, there are many other good games. I did like the funny intro to this video!

    • @Akihito007
      @Akihito007 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea BS. More like it finally reversed the trend of the Eastward drain of Western money. Don't pretend that the East was some sort of Utopia where everyone was living in leisure and equality until the Big Bad West came along and ruined everything. Everything GOOD in India was practically GIVEN to them by the British while most of the people there STILL piss and crap openly on the sidewalk so much that much of the air you breath there is FECAL MATTER!!!

    • @johma1392
      @johma1392 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is unpleasant and there is romancizing a company that used slavery, exploitation, looting and even warmongering (both in India and China). I think it is really dismissive to compare this with trees. Making a game about this theme but 'cleaning it' all that made the EIC exploitative and unethical so that you can play without bad conscience is messed up.

    • @Akihito007
      @Akihito007 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @johma1392 Sounds like every Muslim and Eastern empire and country up to today. Read about Pakistan and China's governments if you don't think that still isn't happening. Everything good in India right now came from the UK and was GIVEN to them.

    • @freddiechristian1298

      @@johma1392 Like I said most Euro games will have something unpleasant. Whether an empire mistreated their citizens or conquered an innocent village or a religion burns opposers at the stake. Just like Jeff said in the video it comes down to an economic game.

    Reviews was OKish I think - first one I've seen by Jeff. The intro threw me and had to do a double take that I was watching the right video. Where's the game? Who's this guy in a tie? I get it now, but didn't really work for me. after getting past the intro things improved (game explanation good), but then: "Even my wife clobbered me playing this"? Maybe clarify that - seems a bit offensive towards your wife. Agree with Jeff that I'm not sure about the theme of the game - seems an odd choice (not very exciting and also ignoring the entire slave trade issue when this is an inflammatory point in modern society). You could argue it's just a game, but all of the above points were distracting enough that I lost interest pretty quickly in watching the video and/or playing the game.
