It's essentially a spin on Gotham Central (the two writers are Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka), some of Year One dosed in the nostalgia of the DCAU beginnings and brimming with Elseworlds/1940's decals.
    I love it

3:33 Regarding your point on this show not entirely fitting into the 1940s- I've thought about that as well. My conclusion was that this is a fantasy show with ghosts and a man made of clay. I think that a sapphic relationship and POC working in the police are plausible in that situation :)

My problem with the show is that there wasn't enough personality or time to get to know the characters. I did like what they did with the Batman and Bruce Wayne dynamic. I even liked what they did with Alfred and Batman's relationship. However, we had little time to explore it, so when he did start calling him Alfred, it didn't seem deserved. I've said it before and I'll say it again: this whole show seems very rushed. So when people got backstabbed or murdered, it didn't have the emotional impact that it wanted me to have because I didn't know these characters. The great thing about "TAS" is that you care about the individual characters, even the villains.

BtAS had an entire marketing empire backing it up in '92. It was coming out along with Batman Returns, a sequel to one of the biggest blockbusters of that era. The animated series HAD to be good though because it needed to encouage the sales of millions in toys, games, books, apparel, etc. This trend continued with the Superman Animated Series and following shows but with diminishing returns.
Caped Crusader has none of these responsibilities.
For better or worse, whether the show ended up being good or not means another season maybe but there's no outside corporate preasure demanding it be great or appeal to the biggest/most normal demographics in order to sell extra products.
There were probably no studio notes, no Standards and Practices or ratings boards to keep the series on track either.
The drive for excellence, to live up to what we all wanted this show to be was left in the hands of the creatives and has delivered mixed results.

No, the Batman had deeper storylines, not as deep as the original animated series but these stories all felt one dimensional nothing felt extremely deep. Nothing felt varied Batman, the original animated series. Every episode felt different from the last some episodes were holiday, specials, some creature features, some were villain of the week, they all felt very different. Everything in this new series all felt the same, and not to mention the animation wasn’t even on par with the original series… I think they should’ve opted in on drawing by hand instead of digitally.

My only real issue with Batman Caped Crusader is the flash animation parts, where movement is way too smooth and looks jarring, but this is most likely a budget/time issue due to 2d animation costing alot of money. I guess the intro just being random scenes of the show is also a budget issue just cause 2d animation is expensive.
Something you didn't say that I greatly enjoyed was the constant presence and threat of Rupert Thorne has over the course of the show. Usually mob boss or gang leader villains are one or two time episode/story threats, just fodder for the costumed villains to gun down, and separate from the Batman Rogues Gallery, but Rupert Thorne's actions effects most of the plot-lines in the show and effectively won in the end (Penguin is arrested, Rupert and his son survived Harvey Dent's killing spree, and Dent is now dead). It really feels like the mob actually are a great threat, and season 2 Batman is gonna face a constant uphill battle now that Rupert Thorne is completely aware of Batman's presence.

I think it was ok, but I'm not exactly thrilled to see more. To me, it felt like they were a bit too caught up in trying to invoke BtAS nostalgia to the point where I'm worried this series might just end up being remembered as "that series that tried being BtAS again". The animation is also pretty hit and miss at times. Some of the action scenes look fine enough, but then you have scenes like the Catwoman chases, which look so awkwardly slow and stilted.

I just started watching today. So far I wish I liked it more, it's not bad but a lot feels "off" to me. I love the art deco and 40s aesthetic but it feels like it's purely aesthetic and not really relevant.
A lot of the new takes feel somewhat shallow just for the sake of it, Harley is my personal least favourite as it feels nothing like the character I love. Plus bullock being a corrupt cop like flass is a shame as I love him so much in btas and wish he was in more.
Batman's voice feels very stiff and flat, like a guy doing a batman voice and in some scenes it really distracts me. His 'go to hell' read has no gusto.
It's good but nothing special to me so far and I wish it was better, I honestly uphold the batman 2004 as far better and it's a shame many just automatically put this above for it being Bruce timm.
I also have my fair share of issues with Bruce timm and his solo work that I feel without Paul dini bleed in severely

If I'm recalling correctly, the Clayface episode references Edith Head. While she designed from the 30s through the 70s, she's oftwn associated with the Hollywood golden era, which makes me think this really is intended to be placed somewhere in the 1940s. I’m convinced a lot of the people criticizing it saw female penguin and just started spouting nonsense like bots. • @thebluewind5733
      @thebluewind5733 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

To be fair regardless how much of and bad attitude he has at times, Bruce sees Alfred as family so it can be a warrant criticism, the bait and switch feel of most themes with new stories is at an all-time high.
If it wasn't relying on the nostalgia of BTAS to lure in the older fans then rip the rug from under them can also be a factor to alienate them.
Political rhetoric and social commentary hasn't been nuanced in a long time and now people are more apprehensive of new shows.
Most Comic fans have it rough time for "modern" takes of classic material.
It's dumb to dismiss that and fan criticism.

Imo this show is exploring Gotham and the people in it as much as Batman and people just want 100% Batman (the BTAS version specifically) when it's not trying to be BTAS bit it's own thing while keeping it faithful to the og

I really like these versions of Batman, Alfred, Commissioner Godron, Clayface, even the Penguin, and the animation is mostly pretty good... but I absolutely hate these versions of Harley Quinn (though I did kinda like her as Harleen Quinzel) and Harvey Dent, the CGI on the cars, and the amount of time spent away from Batman, specially the focus on Renee Montoya. More or less every man in that show wears a suit, but that started to be less common in the 60s and disappeared from casual wear use almost entirely in the 70s onwards. I'm especially as someone who likes Harley Quinn but thinks she's overused am really impressed what they did with her here and I kind of almost wish that she was the villain of the Matt Reeves sequel with this incarnation as it's just so pleasantly different. I also like that they're going to everything without going to the joker yet and I'm pretty sure eventually the joker will show up and now seeing how the other villains were handled. I'm really excited that if he does show up what he's going to be like. Overall a solid start.

I liked the show. I am not a fan of the “villain of the week” formula, I felt that there could have been more development between Batman & his cast. Having Batman take out a villain per episode I think made it harder for these relationships to strengthen more because the pace, namely Harvey and to some extent Selina. Natalia’s arc could have been more impactful on Bruce and us if we saw more of her.
I’d be happier if next season they focus on like 3 villains and build up Batman/Bruce and putting him in more personal conflicts. Also I wish Renee stayed antagonistic towards Batman at least until the last episode. The animation was a bit strange too.
However, Linklater is a good Batman, the villains were neat, the storylines felt nice, good voice acting, Gordon & Batman were good, Harleen was done well.

I feel like the plot of the episodes are rushed along and don't have any suspense or impactful moments. This is only made worse by the bland and lifeless art style. Batman is the superhero that excels in creating a distinct and immersive atmosphere, but this show fails to take advantage of that. This show just feels stale and the new things they introduce just feel like new coats of paint rather than any real change to the batman formula that has been essentially unchanged since the late 80s. This is a mediocre series made by the same Hollywood royalty like matt Reeves and JJ Abrams (yuck) that are responsible for the creative wasteland that comic book media finds itself in today.

It is at least a novel way to do it and allows more world building for characters who'd typically be on the periphery of the stories.
Like having Batman use Montoya to find Clayface shows Batman as tactical and regards certain cops as good as his own detective skills while giving Montoya room to shine in her own right without being chained to Bullock's brick headed comments.

The original btas series is also on Amazon prime and I watched a few episodes after watching two episodes of caped crusader. I think the original has better characters, better writing, better music and better voice acting. But it's kind of unfair to compare the two. Still, I think this show has too many executive producers and the finished product feels kind of lazy and boring. It doesn't seem like they had any fun making it.

We do see certain characters such as Jim Corrigan(Spectre), Linton Midnite (Papa Midnite from Hellblazer), and Eel O'Brien(Plastic Man), who is the reporter that Bruce punched for saying something about his mother. I would love to see a classic Superman or even Alan Scott Green Lantern in something like this

very left wing, blames capitalism for everything, batman was a guest star in his own show. it's montoya that solves the crimes before the batman who only shows up to dispatch baddies. he's not the detective in this case. almost barely influential to the show. Harley basically was torturing rich white men for being rich white and men. there was a scene where lucious fox tells bruce he was raised to treat the help like people. 😂😂😂 rupert thorne said he has a mole leading the penguin to kill her son. The fact that bullock and flask was enamored by her beauty and sex appeal was hilarious. Harvey who was tough on criminals was corrupt and bought by gangsters, a misogynist and asshole but after he becomes 2 face, his other half is also evil? 😂😂😂 buts not not bruce who redeems his friend, it's Barbra gordon who uses her legal efforts to free criminals who are a victim of circumstances caused by capitalism.Barbra is a
cartoon representation of the innocence project who often get more wrong than right but i digress. this is anti capitalistic woke trash.

I’m the type of comic & Batman fan, who after seeing XMen 97’, and Invincible, are just stoked to have new animated shows ‘feel’ like 90’s cartoons.
I don’t look at every single thing on earth through the lens of ‘woke’ or modern politics, I just want to see dope cartoons that are catered for adults while ringing through to kids who are smart.
I was born in 1981 and have watched every single iteration of Batman since then, and I think these episodes are awesome. I love the 40’s setting.
I have political views like everyone else, but when I sit down to watch some cartoons based on a character I LOVE, I can see the forest for the trees. 8/10 for me here. Plus, Harleen’s ass looks great. Don’t play…

My favorite part of this show was the deeper exploration into how horribly corrupt the city actually is. We got some of that in previous Batman animated shows, but the crooked cops were never this brutal or prevalent. It was never *this* dangerous to be a good cop or an honest public official.
I loved the reinvention of Clayface and Harley Quinn, as well as the addition of the Onomatopoeia and Nocturne. I didn't like the ghost episode, though. To me, the purely supernatural stuff never felt like it fit into Batman's world.
I agree with you about kinda' not wanting to see Joker in this series. With all the new stuff they could do, if they fall back on the biggest of Batman's villains, he's going to take over and shove everything else out. I guess they *could* do what they did with Harvey Dent, and just show a little bit of him here and there in each episode, doing things in the background until the last two episodes where it culminates in a massive heavy story. Having said that and realizing how heavily this show focused on Barbara Gordon, I wonder if we're gonna see these two characters clash in a variation of "The Killing Joke" storyline.

Okay, so I just finished watching Batman Caped Crusader, and here is my honest take.
This show is not bad. It's not Batman The Animated Series, and that is okay. It's its own thing, and I look at this as an elseworld project. It is a really good show that has great animation and beautiful music. Really interesting takes on classic villains. The ending was really nice. The show is not perfect and that's fine. I'm not looking for the perfect Batman show. I'm looking for a good Batman show. Yes, I like that the series uses its 1940 noir setting, and I think it works for the most part. I personally do not like race swaps and gender bent characters In media, but I look at it like this, If it does not take place in the original continuity of the story, then that's perfectly fine if it is a different take on something, then it's okay, but you have to keep the core of the character the same. You can make small changes here and there, but the core of the character is what matters. The show does have woke stuff in it, but it's not arguably that terrible. I will say it doesn't really work for the setting that the show is in, but again, it's a different take.So i'm kind of you know mixed on it, but it doesn't make me go oh I hate this show. It's stupid or oh I looked at clips of the show online out of context without actually watching the show and now I hate it, because someone said it was bad.
I really like Batman in this show. He is very hardcore and very focused on the mission, which, again, is Batman in his early years. If you read the comics and that's fine, I liked by the end of the show. He is opening up to having allies, and I think that is a really good progression of his character. Also, I really like the Bruce Wayne and Batman voices very well done.
I understand that we hate changes and we hate different takes on things, but I always say, give something a chance for yourself without anyone's Influencing your opinion and check out something for yourself and judge it for yourself. Overall, I give the show and 8 out of 10, not bad, and i'm excited to see what's next. #batman #batmancapedcrusader #dccomics #warnerbros #brucetimm #mattreeves #jjabrams #animation

Story telling was good. I liked the characters. I enjoyed the new take on Harley Quinn. I liked how they threw two legit supernatural episodes in there. My biggest gripe is the animation. It's consistent and some of the fight scenes look very dynamic, especially the one where Barbara and Corrigan fight the goon squad member in the kitchen. But the majority of the show looks so flat. People are stiff and not very expressive. It's just unfortunate that Caped Crusader was announced so long ago, and this is what the finished product ends up looking like. I like New Batman Adventures, Superman The Animated Series, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, and now Caped Crusader, but it seems like nothing is ever going to top or come close to the look of BTAS.

This video could not have coincided with my viewing of Caped Crusader any better than it has here. I finished it last night. I love what they've done with Caped Crusader. To me, it's more Noir than even BTAS, but at the same time, there's nothing more 'adult' about it with the exception of the emphasis on politics. I very much buy into the idea that this is a setting somewhere in the '40's given the technology (or lack thereof), but with a different spin on how history largely played out. Just as the villains were remixed, it makes sense they could have done the same with everything leading up to the story and Gotham we're seeing here to make the characters more diverse and inclusive. Like Pup, I kind of wish we had stayed clear of Joker because in my opinion he's pretty played out, but this could be another unique twist on the Clown Prince that reinvigorates the idea, or maybe we might even go in the direction of him meeting his intended end earlier on in his criminal career. Only time will tell. I hope they're able to keep this level of quality going forward and if so I can't wait to see what's next.

What I loved about Caped Crusader is that they did exactly what they have done with BTSA: they reimagined characters from the comics. At the time they ALSO wanted to lean onto the politics and the corrupt police force but weren't allowed to -- not to mention that during the first season of BTSA they had the executives and half of the team wanting to do something closer to Super Friends so that's why you get the one with the Batman in the basement (and then the guy from Super Friends that they hired actually wanted to do more mature and adult stuff and it was when it pivoted). I think Caped Crusader is brilliant.
