Like the color over the previous tile color. Good to know there is an alternative to retiling. Would give the dog a raised water dish. If water spills, it is more likely to dry on its own...
I love the black and wish we could do this, but our kitchen has the ugliest laminate flooring 😫 Thanks for sharing your floor I think it's a great idea. Have you looked into a diatomaceous earth floor mat for dogs!? I'm sure someone has mentioned them, but they look like stone and they absorb water or liquid. Its actually really cool, I want a diatomaceous earth bathmat. Definitely look into this yourself as I've never used one, and ofc do your research and see what others say. ❤
@@JessieLee_ I've just learned of them! Definitely going to check them out. Thank you! Also, I believe this paint works over laminate also. Check the product link in the video description :)
With the movement in the original tiles, painting them black makes perfect sense because now it looks like they're original slate tiles.... but without the cost ❤
I can testify to the Rustoleum Shower/Tub paint product. We painted our daughter's tub in her rental over a year ago. Her husband is a mechanic who takes some pretty serious showers daily, and they have two 95 pound dogs that get bathed in the tub at least monthly. The product has held up without fault for 13 months now!
It really does look great - and tile is so much more durable than wood. And with the grout painted as well,. you've eliminated all the negatives of tile. Great idea! Of course wood is more desirable when selling.
We bought a formal colonial house where the previous owner had used vinyl for the front hall!!! I didn’t have money at that time to replace it. I got on my hands and knees and using 3 colors of outdoor paint and porch latex paint, taping off squares to make faux marble tiles. It looked so good, my son’s girlfriend got down on the floor to look under the baseboard heating to see if it was really painted. It held up beautifully and looked gorgeous. We eventually installed porcelain tile, but didn’t need to as it held up so well.
If your floor tiles are in a good condition you don't need to remove them before re-tiling or installing a laminate. The only problem is to deal with the level difference if you don't do this throughout, and you need to undercut your doors. We have tiled over most of our floors, and we got a spec from the tiling supplier on how to prepare the old tiles to ensure adhesion.
I really really like your black floor. It looks classy! I wouldn't bother with the hardwood floor because it seems everyone has them where black is unique and goes with everything. I am thinking of putting in black tile with heat under tile in my basement and when I saw your video I was really impressed with the black! Great video by the way...very professional!
In the basement? Do you have enough daylight coming in there? We once had very dark tiles and it sucked the light right out of the house. Although the looks are fine, that made the whole house look a bit drab. And we had plenty of windows.
@@gardenjoy5223 Hey thanks for your comment. My basement has really big windows and I have recessed lights thoughout. Maybe I could rethink this...never thought about it effecting the light. Thank you for your comment!
A friend’s Great Dane splashed/drooled water everywhere! She switched to a half filled Lowe’s bucket and it practically solved the problem. Obviously your pup is smaller but a half filled deeper bowl might help. Beautiful floor!
that's what I used for my dog as well. Both his water and food bowl were on the tray and it keeps the floor clean and dry and the tray is a breeze to clean in the sink. Saved me a lot of hard scrubbing.
Black happens to be my favorite color. I painted my bathroom floor black , the walls are tiled half way up so I used grout paint markers to paint the grout black also.
I love the colour! I think it’s timeless and very chic. You can literally paint your walls any colour you want because black goes with everything. Gosh, this makes me want to paint my bathroom shower a light grey…with the appropriate paint you mentioned of course.😊
Thank you for such a thorough and complete update on your painted tile. I don't believe I'll ever use the paint, but your video was so highly informative I can advise people of the pro's and (small) cons of it. I like being useful like that. So thank you! BTW, I love the way it looks.
I have a huge wolf/ shepherd dog and she would soak the area where she had her bowl and track water all over the place. Nothing I did helped until I started putting her water bowl in the shower. It has worked wonders! No more water being tracked all over the house 😅
It is so classy and beautiful, well done. I didn't see the original video but don't need to, I'm sold. I wouldn't be bothered with hardwood personally, been there, it scratches, streaks, shows everything…water drops, slippery when wet etc. Your floor looks like slate. 👍🏼👍🏼
I absolutely love the look of the black tiles! They look like they would be SUPER expensive and add a unique element to your home. I understand the allure of hardwood, but I would be tempted to consider leaving it as is. I think it adds a beautifully grounded look to your rooms❣️❣️
Nine years ago, I chose to paint over the tiles in my laundry room. After patching some broken parts, I painted in one color and then used a large stencil to paint on a design in a contrasting color. It's starting to show some wear, but I'm still pleased with the project. So much for all the friends who said I was nuts to paint the floor! 😊
This video just popped up in my feed today and.I am glad it did. We have this tile in our current kitchen, which I am not too worried about. However, we are hoping to move in 2 years when my husband retires and unfortunately, the area we want to move to is very expensive and we are not going to be able to afford anything but a fixer upper. In our preliminary house hunting, many of the homes in our price range have not had the floors redone and are sporting this sort of tile everywhere. This would be a great option as I like the way your floor looks painted. The fact that it has held makes it even better. I now know there is a solution to the ugly tile floors should we end up purchasing a house with them.
I also have dated tile, and had some replaced, but it was messy and all that tile went into a landfill. I now plan the paint the remaining tile. Thanks for the update!
Thank you. I watched the first video and wondered how it was going. I have tile I would like to paint but it will have contact with water, so . . . this probably won't be my fix. Maybe the other Rustoleum paint. You really covered all the possibilities. I love the color. I have wood floors I'd trade in a heartbeat for your tile. They scratch, they dent, have to be constantly dusted, they stain. Give me tile any day.
Another person said they wish they had know about this for a house they used to own. Same goes for me. That house was big and the same big beige tiles were everywhere except the bedrooms. Putting the dog water bowl in the shower would likely be my first choice, but if there is a doggie door the back patio would work too. Thank you for a very thorough review!
We have a no spill dog bowl that we used camping for our girls before they passed away. It has a floating piece in it so there is only a dribble of water showing at any one time and instead of putting their face in the bowl and then dribbling everywhere they licked it out. Our dogs adapted to it very easily. It needed refilling faster than our big water bowl at home but way less mess.
I purchased crib pads (?) / Waterproof pads for seniors. I got them from Goodwill for $2. Cotton on one side and "some sort" of liner. I have 7 medium to small dogs. . . Lots of drips. . .no water damage to my hard wood floor. I change mine out every 2 to 3 days.
I had oak wood flooring and couldn’t keep dog water area dry enough until I found at Gardener’s Supply Water hog door mats and use in the dog water area! I have zero water issues now! Nothing gets through them!
I'm so excited. The tiles in our house were white and with dogs, always looked dirty. I wanted to paint ours black, and was nervous...now I'm super excited! Thanks!
I have a couple tiled areas this might work well for & appreciate your insights after living with it for awhile! I’m definitely in the “love the black” category!. Your home looks lovely & your dog is a cutie!! Thanks for sharing this.
I have wood flooring throughout my house, including where my dog's water bowl resides. I use a mat designed for dish drying as it absorbs the water but dries very quickly.
I just loved the floor but I have too much tile to afford to paint. My color is similar with dark grout. I decided to paint the grout with Grout Renew from Home Depot using a lighter color. What a difference..it looks like a new floor! Tile itself looks just like it did 30 years ago and now it looks like new. I’m going to paint the tile countertops though.
I am so glad that painting is an option for tile floors. I look at houses on Zillow sometimes and good grief....those brown tiles are such an eyesore.😖😖 This is a perfect fix while waiting and saving up for replacement flooring. The black looks fabulous in your house.👍🏻
PSA for all those wanting to paint tile floors: we did it in two rooms about 6 years ago. It held up fine until we started having kids, and those floors have not been able to last our small children picking at the floors, lol. But my main point is homeowner's insurance - we had a pipe leak and long story short, insurance won't cover the cost to repair the flooring because it is painted, so we are footing that $6k bill ourselves, in addition to our deductible for the rest of the claim for other water damage in the house. If we had known this issue we never would have painted the tiles. We even had to involve a lawyer to resolve the claim, but even the lawyers said the floor is a no-go 😢
For our St. Bernard's bowl, we used the lid of a big plastic storage box and turned it upsidown, under the bowl, like a mat. It had a lip, which kept the splashed water inside and off the floor.
This sounds a great idea. Thanks for addressing the concerns about furniture and dog nails. I have similar colour tiles and would love to paint then dark grey.
I love the black floor. If you guys were going to keep it instead of going with hardwood floors, then I suggest a clear epoxy coat over it. It would help prevent your standing water issue.
I have an old bathroom which I can't afford to renovate. I'd already thought of painting the bath (with the right paint). Now I think I'll do the floor too. Thank you!
It never occurred to me to paint tile! Thanks for the durability update! I'll be watching your previous video. I don't hate my small section of tiled flooring, but I do hate the tile I have on an island/room divider surface and around my (almost never used) fireplace, so I might try this.
Pet bowl water control: Get a sheet pan with a lip that gives you space around the bowls. Use some plastic bumps (I’ve found flat ones) on the bottom of the sheet pan to keep it from moving around. You can find them in the section where they have the felt pads to keep chair legs from scratching. The lip of the pan will keep the mess in check. As a bonus, when I am fighting my annual ant invasion, I use the pan to create a moat around the cat food bowl so the ants don’t get in it.
I think it looks good! I also like that the clear coat seems to reflect the light pretty well. So it does not look too dark. I use to have a brown tile floor like you had. It was driving me crazy!
If I wanted to use something to help me with the water issue, I think I would try a ceramic coating, the kind you apply to your car. It's hydrophobic and puts a protective layer between the paint and the water. Of course I would do a test patch first. And ceramic coating does come in matte, semi gloss, and glossy.
Brilliant video, thanks for sharing. Love the colour & if I were you, I wouldn’t think of this as a temporary fix, although appreciate that’s how it started off. I personally wouldn’t change the flooring now - looks fantastic!
I agree! I think this looks great, and I don't think hardwood would be a step up. I actually think she would regret hardwood with dog claws and the waterbowl situation.
BRAVO! Truly impressed! Really wish I had seen your project before I sold the house.🤦♀ Had the same tile, but white/beige peachy tones. You elevated the entire space! While I focused on only the grout, I so wished I had the courage to have done what you did! I chose the method of "dying" the grout lines. Previous homeowner used white grout and didn't seal it (should be jailed!) so it absorbed everything from cleaning fluid color and soil. Used a product that required a cleaning first of the grout, then A toothbrush action to apply the dye/paint. It held up very well. Encourage all to look into that if it is only your grout that is an issue. Water Bowl: Did your rubber mat have lipped edges, like an all season auto floor mat? Wonder if that stone bat mat that absorbs instantly would work? Wonder where the moisture goes? WISDOM beyond floors: NEVER trust a DIY floor painter who doesn't😘 🐶🐕LOVE a dog. ~ I saw that quote on a wall plaque recently. Noticed the precious halo, God bless your heart. Friend, while it doesn't get better, it does get different. And...then something happens, becomes sweeter in realizing how blessed you were being SO Loved. Comfort and PEACE 2U.
Thank you!! Yes, our rubber mat had lipped edges. She would still drag the water out beyond the mat haha. And I love the quote :) All dogs are welcome friends here!
I'm so glad this video popped up on my recommendation list. I have a small 1/2 bath with blue tile flooring (about 20 years old) and I've been wondering if it could be painted since I don't have the budget right now to replace. Now I know it can be done! Yours looks fantastic!
I use a diatomaceous earth bath mat/sink mat under my dog's water bowl. It soaks up water immediately and is the best fix I've found so far to prevent a standing puddle under their bowl. However, the two big Goldens I have are **ridiculously** sloppy drinkers and still manage to flood the floor well away from the bowl, like 4 feet away. But if your pups aren't quite that bad, a DE mat used in conjunction with something like an under sink mat, 'wee-wee' pads, or boot tray may work for you.
I think I'll try the DE mat! However, your goldens sound exactly like my lab. She raises her head and walks away while 2 gallons pours out of her mouth in a path away from the bowl. Its really amazing. Thank you :)
@@MakerGray lol, yep that's us too. Seems there's no preventing it, and I have one that likes to play in the bowl. At least the DE mat prevents the perpetual puddle underneath the bowl. I don't know how it will work out on your painted floor, but it may be worth a try. Good luck ;)
Boot tray, boot tray, boot tray! Put those big felt feet on bottom and it is slightly lifted off floor. I have big springer spaniels and one likes to fully face plunge when he drinks. Since we have hard wood floors, this has saved us! Good video BTW!
Totally new here. House hunting is in my future , so I was curious about this subject. But….. when I saw that you have dog ( with a halo) annnd doggie friends come over….. as a mom of 4 dogs ( as many as 8 in the past ) I was sold on your channel and HAD ro subscribe and I have no idea what your other content even is. DOGS ROCK!!! Always
I think it's beautiful! Your rugs just pop❤ I also think it looks like leather tiles (yes, that's a real thing and incredibly expensive!) I am definitely going to do this in my laundry room. Thanks so much for doing an update-I have wondered how it held up. I think it's because you are so thorough with your prep-no matter the project. Did you mention what cleaning products you use-if so, I missed it. I know you mop and steam clean but what do you put in your mop water?
Great video - thank you for your review and sharing your own experiences in such informative detail. Interior designer here, your color choice of black for these textural tiles looks like a good decision functionally; as you stated, does not show stains or dirt where light colors can. As well as aesthetically- from what I can observe in the video; large, expansive area where black could lend itself to a 'closed in feeling' in a small area. The light wood tones of the several furniture pieces, which complement and tie in with the natural stone fireplace, pop in contrast to the black background. Think of the black velour where jewelers showcase gold jewelry and colorful gemstones. I first got my education and degree almost 30 years ago and it is truly mind boggling as to the properties, abilities and functionality of paint today! Some of these properties were available back then but only in industrial/commercial applications/products - and incredibly expensive with that. Temporary solutions as you've gone with here in your design are fabulous options in the interim until what we would choose can be implemented. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. 🕊 🫶 💪 🪷
I painted wood parquet tiles which were badly worn. There were occasional scratches, I just repainted. I had this situation for at least five years with kids and dogs in a wet environment. Maybe every other summer I emptied the room and repainted the entire floor. I chose a medium teal because it went with our furnishings. The best part was that I was freed from worry because it was really easy to refresh. Over time the wood tiles continued to age and break down and we eventually replaced the flooring. But it gave us several years of easy care floors in the meantime.
I’m really shocked about the chairs not damaging the finish. We put down “luxury” vinyl tiles from a major manufacturer (THE major manufacturer) and where our chair rub on the floor, the entire wear layer and graphic have worn off and left large patches of white. I have a very similar tile to yours in our lower level - I may have to consider this painting thing!
I kind of shocked too! Honestly I think it comes down to the type of furniture you have. Our dining chairs have rubber on the bottom and aren't too harsh. But we've really gotten lenient about moving any furniture around and so far it's been fine! I'm surprised and sorry to hear of your LVP performance! Thats a stinger for sure.
The floor looks great. Good to know it held up. Standing water could be a problem in my small entryway in the winter. The snow packed on shoes might present a problem even though I have a rubber backed rug. I wonder if the shower tile paint would work in my entry better, I will have to research that. Thanks for your update.
Looks great. Rubber mats are a problem, hold in water even on regular tile. I've had a tenant ruin sealed tile/grout because they let water stay under the bath mat.

You get it :) Thank you!!
That floor is beautiful!
Thank you!
We even had to involve a lawyer to resolve the claim, but even the lawyers said the floor is a no-go 😢
That's nuts. Sorry
I LOVE the black floor! Great job!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Great! Thank you for watching!
Wow it looks fantastic!
I'm really impressed with how it turned out and with how it is wearing.
Us too!
It never occurred to me to paint tile! Thanks for the durability update! I'll be watching your previous video. I don't hate my small section of tiled flooring, but I do hate the tile I have on an island/room divider surface and around my (almost never used) fireplace, so I might try this.
Looks so beautiful. What a great fix on a budget. Thank you so much.
Thank you!
It looks SO GOOD! Just found your channel!! The floor looks like flagstone or some sort of slate stone! Gorgeous!
Ahhhhh thank you so much! I can't unsee gorgeous slate tiles now :) And welcome to the channel!
This looks great. Much richer than the original floor. Great color choice.
❤ the slate look!!
Those floors are gorgeous!!!💖
Thank you! We think so too!
You did such a nice job. Prep is SO important when doing so many things :-) Thanks for sharing.
It really is. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! And thank you!
Thanks for the tips! And thank you!
I love this floor and thanks for the update and thorough review!
Thank you for watching!
I love the black! It looks very tidy !😊
Always
Any dog friend is a friend of mine!! Welcome!!
Thank you so much!! I appreciate it! We use Branch Basics for all of our cleaning, including mop water and steam cleaning. Non toxic and works great!
@@MakerGray wonderful! Thanks for responding!
Thank you! I appreciate you sharing!
You did an incredible job. It's beautiful, I wouldn't bother with wood flooring 😊
Thank you so much! 😊
Very cool! Thank you for sharing this :)
I'll own, I was a skeptic, but looks so great - I vote keep forever !
WOW those painted tiles look so good! Now I want to paint my floor tiles as well!!! Really love the color 🖤black🖤 btw 👍👍😊😊😊
Thanks so much! I think they look amazing too!
I love the black
Thats a stinger for sure.
rubber feet under the legs' ends usually solves that
The floor looks fantastic. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
OMGoodness!!! I so wish I'd seen this before I started my house search ruling out thousands of great homes because of ugly tile!!! Thank You!!!
We have a 70 and a 30 pound pup. I keep the water bowl on a quick dry memory foam bathmat with great success.
Great tip!
Thank you so much for the updates. I’ve really been wanting to do this over vinyl due to costs. You have really helped me with my decision.
I'm so glad! Thanks for your comment and for watching!
I hear that the paint works even better on vinyl than tile.
Love the black. For the dog bowls, how about laying down one of those translucent floor protectors that are used under rolling office chairs?
The floor looks great. Good to know it held up. Standing water could be a problem in my small entryway in the winter. The snow packed on shoes might present a problem even though I have a rubber backed rug. I wonder if the shower tile paint would work in my entry better, I will have to research that. Thanks for your update.
Thanks for watching!
Looks great. Rubber mats are a problem, hold in water even on regular tile. I've had a tenant ruin sealed tile/grout because they let water stay under the bath mat.
