  • Here's the basic explanation and example of how to replace and wire in a new pressure switch on an air compressor. I hope this is easier than watching a 20 minute video! I found it pretty basic and self-explanatory to do this, I hope that you do as well!

    I bought a used 60gal that had a broken off pressure switch that the guy had already just un-wired and thrown in the trash… so I had no reference and my Amazon unit had no labels or instructions. Nice video mate , very simple and easy to follow ! Now how would i take the existing wiring and mount an external switch for the air compressor silencer box I’m building? I’ve got the extension air dump valve line sorted , and the airline connectors , but want to do this part safely. I could always fabricate something that locks on to the stop start button using a pull rod (either way I’m going to have to drill a hole) but would prefer a big red emergency stop button . If I use the current switch it will have no means of an earth , and I don’t want to expose the housing where it normally sits. Interested in hearing your thoughts ?!
    Thanks mate 😊

    Remember line is from your breaker box or wall receptacle and load is the wiring going to a motor in this case or other device that uses the electricity. Think of power lines and that is where line comes from and your device creates a load so it is referred to as the load.

    Great simple video, my compressor kids on then off then on then off. You think it’s the pressure switch?

    • @jimmysgarage9068
      @jimmysgarage9068  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100%. Your pressure switch has a diaphragm that lifts up when the tank reaches cutoff/cut in pressures. It then pushes/releases a metal contact that turns the pump on and off. Yours is shot. Easy fix!

    • @WWard1962

      @@jimmysgarage9068 replaced pressure switch. Still does the same thing on then off on then off. You think the mother is shot?? I’d a Coleman powermate 27 Gallon. Can’t find and parts anywhere for it.

    • @jimmysgarage9068
      @jimmysgarage9068  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WWard1962 I haven’t personally worked on a Coleman machine. The pressure switch controls the on/off due to pressure in the tank pressing on the diaphragm. So either you have a bad/wrong (new) switch.
      Have you emptied the tank of moisture? Make sure that it’s always emptied of water/condensation. You may have a blockage in the fitting connected to the pressure switch due to rust?
      Hard to really say without helping you tear into it.

    Do all compressors have a pressure switch? I own a light 2 gal Mastercraft compressor that had a cracked manifold… so I decided to try and fix it by doing the following : at the output of the tank, I installed a regulator with gauge, followed by a Y fitting, on one side I have the safety valve, and on the other side, my tool plug. The compressor build up pressure to about 120 PSI (it’s rated at 125 PSI max), and stops by jtself… So there must be some kind of mechanism that tells it to stop? I just tried to reproduce the original manifold assuming the big knob was just a regular air regulator…

    • @jimmysgarage9068
      @jimmysgarage9068  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short answer - yes. If they didn't have a way to regulate max tank pressure, the motors would run until they wear out. Also, the max PSI of a machine isn't always reflective of the tank, but of the motor's capability of continually building pressure in said tank.
      You'll notice with some air compressor brands, they'll have a few different sized tanks, but all with the same motor. That's because the motor can only push air into a tank with 135/150/175 PSI until it can't anymore.
      I hope that makes sense! Thank you for watching.

    • @jimmysgarage9068

      I have a horizontal 20 gal. tank compressor which is over 35 years old. I have it on a slight angle ( wooden block under the piston end ) giving a slight incline so that any condensation runs toward the tank drain which is on the tank BOTTON towards the handle side. You can no longer get the original switch even from the manufacturer. They sell a replacement part for it but it's as different from the original as the one in the video is.
